Review of Kapitan Babichev icebreaker
MS Kapitan Babichev ("ледокол Капитан Бабичев") is an icebreaking vessel owned and operated by LORP JSC - Yakutsk, Russia ("Ленское объединённое речное пароходство") which currently operates a fleet of five ships.
One of the Russian river icebreaker ships, Kapitan Babichev is named after a prominent figure in the history of Lena United River Shipping Company, and one of the best captains of the Lena basin. In the Russia's Arctic regions, merchant ships hurry to deliver goods before the end of navigation.
In 2015, off the coast of Yakutia (Sakha Republic, Russia), the northern delivery service required more effort than usual due to extreme bad weather conditions (strong winds up to 110 kph and rouge waves several meters high). The crew anchored the icebreaker in a relatively quiet bay to prevent damages to the cargo. Later, the ship made its second trip to the Arctic, overcoming a distance of nearly 300 km / ~190 ml on Laptev Sea, sailing from Lena River to Yana River. The powerful icebreaker helped in towing three coal barges loaded with ~6000 tons of bulk cargo.
Kapitan Babichev itinerary program offers sailings in Russia’s Arctic Ocean waters with departures from homeport Arkhangelsk (northeastern Russia).
