Disney Wish Review
Review of Disney Wish
The 2021-built/2022-inaugurated DCL Disney Wish cruise ship is The Walt Disney Company's newest vessel and the first in a series of three newbuilds constructed by Meyer Werft in Papenburg. Disney Wish was originally scheduled for launch in Q4 2021 (with inauguration by Christmas 2021) and to begin passenger operations in January 2022. However, due to COVID-related issues (shipyard closures, supply chain disruptions), her introduction was postponed to Q2 2022 (July).
MS Disney Wish is the DCL fleet’s 5th vessel. The other three ships from this series (WISH-class, formerly TRITON-class) were also delayed, with rescheduled deliveries in 2024 (Disney Treasure), 2025 (Disney Destiny), and 2027 (Disney TBN).
The WISH-class/TRITON-class ships are very similar in size and capacity to their sisterships Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.
DCL’s new ships are intended for year-round deployment in the Caribbean, homeporting in Florida at PortMiami (Destiny) and Port Canaveral (Wish and Treasure).
Like all DCL vessels, Disney Wish (IMO 9834739) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311001098) and registered in Nassau.
History - construction and ownership
DCL-Disney Cruise Line is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (shipowner). The company was incorporated in 1996 as "Magical Cruise Company Ltd." Walt Disney also owns the Bahamian private island Castaway Cay (exclusive port of call for Disney ships), an exclusive cruise terminal at Port Canaveral, Orlando, and the private Lighthouse Point resort complex on Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. Disney cruises are marketed as "family vacations" and offer unique activities such as costumed Disney Characters, adults-only deck areas, dedicated facilities for children of all ages, themed entertainment, and signature onboard experiences.
In March 2016, Disney announced plans to build three new (and largest) liners, and in July 2017 signed a three-ship agreement with Meyer Werft GmbH (Germany). The Triton-class design is LNG-powered (liquefied natural gas), with gross tonnage of 144,000 GT (larger than the originally announced 135,000 GT) and capacity for 2500 passengers in 1250 staterooms. This makes them only slightly larger than the Dream-class ships.
The 3500-passenger Disney Wish is designed primarily for families with young children (especially under age 8), Disney’s strongest market segment. The ship features innovative technologies and unique entertainment, including:
- "Enchanted Art" pieces in corridors – framed LCD screens that recognize guests and display interactive animations;
- Wave Phones in every stateroom, replacing the old beeper system, allowing parents to receive counselors' messages directly;
- "Magical Portholes" in all Inside cabins – round LED screens showing real-time outside views.
DCL’s clientele is largely North American (USA and Canada). The new approach includes age-related activities for teens and young couples, enhancing appeal for multi-generational families.
The ship’s dress code mirrors Disney’s luxury resorts: daily casual and evening resort casual – men in jackets (no ties) with pants, women in summer dresses (gowns optional). All Disney Triton-class itineraries feature one pirate night and one semi-formal night. On 3-day cruises, one night is casual; on 4-day cruises, two nights casual; on 5-day and longer, three nights casual.
Gratuities are set at USD 14.50 per person per day (USD 15.50 for Suite guests), covering dining staff and cabin attendants. Additionally, a 15% gratuity is automatically applied to all beverages.
Decks and Cabins
MS Disney Wish staterooms (1238 total, across 26 categories) are mostly midship-located Balconies. All cabins and suites are well designed and equipped with the latest amenities. Like other Disney ships, staterooms are among the industry’s largest standard cabins, accommodating up to four guests. They feature ample storage, lounge/living areas, and split bathrooms (one with shower-bathtub-sink-WC, another with toilet-sink). Beds are raised for suitcase storage. Standard amenities include two mirrored vanities with chairs, 22-inch smart HDTV, iPod docking station, and two rechargeable "Wave Phones."
The ship has 15 passenger decks, 10 with cabins, and a total of 35 wheelchair-accessible staterooms.
DCL’s Inside Cabins feature the innovative "Magical Portholes," while Veranda Cabins include balconies with two deck chairs and a table. Concierge Suites and Family Cabins provide access to a private lounge and sundeck with complimentary food and drinks. Most 1-Bedroom Suites feature connecting doors, Queen bed (convertible to twins), lounge with sofabed and pull-down bed, walk-in closet, and two bathrooms (one with whirlpool tub).
Among the largest accommodations are the Royal Suites, with a living room, wet bar, kitchenette, media library, and outdoor Jacuzzi. The "Wish Tower Suite," located in the forward funnel, is the industry’s first loft suite at sea.
The 1965 ft² (183 m²) Wish Tower Suite accommodates up to 8 guests. Inspired by Disney’s "Moana" (2016), it includes two master bedrooms, four full bathrooms, a half-bath, a convertible library, a kids’ room with built-in bunks, and a two-story living/dining space with panoramic views.
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
Disney Wish has three themed main dining rooms (MDRs) – "Animator's Palate," "Enchanted Garden," and "Royal Palace" – plus two adults-only specialty restaurants: "Remy" (French cuisine, inspired by Ratatouille) and "Palo" (Italian cuisine). DCL’s Rotational Dining system allows guests to experience each main restaurant while being served by the same wait staff. Animator's Palate features animated Disney characters; Enchanted Garden offers Versailles-inspired lighting effects transitioning from day to night; Royal Palace is princess-themed, with portraits of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty characters (even bread baskets shaped like Cinderella’s coach). Food quality is consistently high, and service is friendly and efficient.
Remy is a fine dining venue with a French menu, $75 service fee per person (plus drinks/wine), formal attire required, and reservations essential. Palo serves Italian-Mediterranean cuisine, with a $20 cover per person for dinner or Champagne brunch on select days. Menus feature seafood, pasta, cold buffets, and hot made-to-order items. The casual buffet "Cabanas" on Deck 11 offers hot and cold stations, omelets, and sandwiches. "Flo’s Cafe" serves burgers, wraps, chicken fingers, pizza, and salads.
In December 2020, DCL teased that the ship’s lobby statue would be Cinderella, located in the three-deck Grand Hall Atrium. This midship entertainment space features an open-floor design, grand staircase, bronze statue, and a chandelier with thousands of crystals and a giant "wishing star." Rapunzel is painted on the ship’s stern.
Disney’s 35-minute YouTube video released on April 29, 2021, revealed the following signature features of DCL Disney Wish:
- Onboard appearances by Disney characters (Olaf, Captain Minnie, Captain Mickey, Fairy Godmother).
- A 760-ft (232-m) waterslide “Slide-a-Saurus Rex” featuring show scenes, lighting, and sound effects. Compared to Disney Fantasy and Dream, Wish has more swimming pools (7 total), expanded outdoor deck space, and the AquaMouse water playground for families.
- The Oceaneer Club (for ages 3-12) – exclusive to Disney Wish – includes Marvel Super Hero Academy (kids design their own superhero costumes and interact with Spider-Man, Ant-Man, The Wasp, Black Panther), Fairytale Hall (Rapunzel Art Studio, Belle’s Library, Anna & Elsa’s Summerhus), Imagineering Lab (VR design lab where kids create and “ride” their own roller coasters inspired by Space Mountain, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad), plus Small World Nursery (ages 6 months–3 years, babysitting available), Hero Zone (indoor playground/sports arena), and Olaf’s Royal Picnic (character interaction with live music).
- Exclusive teen spaces: a dedicated hangout for ages 11–14 and separate lounges for ages 14–17.
- Suites above the Navigation Bridge, including the fleet’s first 2-level duplex apartments with spiral staircases.
New dining concepts include Palo Steakhouse (115 seats, Cogsworth-themed, Italian and steakhouse menu), Enchanté by Michelin chef Arnaud Lallement (Lumiere-themed fine dining with 45 seats and 6- or 9-course menus), and The Rose Restaurant & Bar Lounge (inspired by “Beauty and the Beast”).
The Quiet Cove Pool District is an adults-only sun deck with an infinity pool, Jacuzzis, bar, and café.
The ship has two 3D cinemas – Wonderland Cinema (84 seats) and Never Land Cinema (86 seats) – screening films by Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm.
Luna Square is a midship venue offering family entertainment by day and adults-only shows by night. Luna Lounge includes a two-deck LED screen, bar (Luna Libations), and a stage for live productions such as “Villains Game Night,” “Disney Songbook,” and “Disney Uncharted Adventure.”
The Star Wars-themed Hyperspace Lounge offers immersive experiences for adults. It gained fame for the world’s most expensive cocktail – the Kaliburr Crystal – priced at USD 5000, served in a camtono (prop from The Mandalorian/Boba Fett). The container opens dramatically to reveal three shot-style glasses of a premium concoction, rumored to include Louis XIII cognac. Regular cocktails start at USD 15, with souvenir glasses available for USD 12 extra.
Disney Wish features three family table-service restaurants: “Arendelle” (Frozen-themed dinner with live show), “1923” (California cuisine celebrating the founding year of Disney Studios), and “Worlds of Marvel” (interactive superhero dining adventure).
New quick-service options include “Marceline Market” and “Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods,” both complimentary.
- Marceline Market: indoor-outdoor food marketplace with daily specials and freshly prepared American and international classics, seafood, comfort foods, vegetarian/vegan options, and desserts. Buffet service for breakfast and lunch, table service for dinner.
- Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods: outdoor, boardwalk-style quick-service dining with shaded seating and five themed stations – Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue, Donald’s Cantina (Mexican), Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill, and Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream.
At the “Worlds of Marvel” restaurant, Disney introduced “Avengers: Quantum Encounter” – an interactive cinematic dining experience featuring Ant-Man and The Wasp. Guests participate in the storyline while enjoying Marvel-themed cuisine inspired by Wakanda, Sokovia, and Avengers Compound.
Complete list of Disney Wish dining venues and food bars:
- Enchanted Garden Restaurant (696-seat forward MDR, Versailles-inspired; buffet breakfast/lunch, full-service dinner)

- Animator’s Palate Restaurant (696-seat aft MDR, animator’s studio design, character shows, rotational dining)

- Remy (adults-only French specialty dining, reservations required, lunch/dinner)
- Palo (144-seat adults-only Italian specialty dining, reservations required)

Shipboard entertainment – Fun and Sport
Disney’s kids clubs are central to its strong repeat passenger loyalty. Staffed by experienced, friendly, and college-educated counselors, the Oceaneer Club and Lab (ages 3–10) double the fun with themed rooms: “Andy’s Room” with oversized Toy Story characters, “Laugh Floor” with Mike and Sully (Monsters Inc.), Animator’s Studio, and Sound Studio.
The “Edge” club (ages 11–13), located in the funnel on Deck 13, features an 18-ft LCD wall, video karaoke, and networked PCs. The “Vibe” teen-only club (ages 14–17) spans 9000 ft², with its own fountain bar, sundeck, and pools.
Public areas are decorated in deep blue and red, with hidden Mickey motifs throughout. The three-deck Grand Hall Atrium features a golden glow, sweeping staircase, Donald Duck bronze statue, and connects restaurants, theaters, and shops. Wi-Fi is available shipwide.
Like all Disney ships, Wish has no casino.

Disney Wish Wiki
On July 15, 2017, Disney Cruise Line (DCL) officially announced plans to build three new vessels in Germany at Meyer Werft's Papenburg Shipyard. The exciting announcement for Disney fans was made by Bob Chapek, then Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
MS Disney Wish's construction officially began on April 8, 2021, with the keel-laying ceremony (Meyer Werft yard/hull number 705) held in Papenburg. This was the 54th cruise ship built at the yard. During the ceremony, the first hull block was lowered into the building dock, and for good luck, a newly minted coin featuring Captain Minnie was placed under the keel by Philip Matthew Gennotte, Executive Manager of Walt Disney Imagineering (Germany) GmbH. DCL also announced that Captain Minnie would appear on the ship's bow artwork.
Disney Wish was launched/floated out from drydock at Meyer Werft on February 11, 2022.
At around 8 am local time (~6 am UTC) on March 30, 2022, the ship began her 10-hour, 32-km (20-mi) conveyance voyage along the Ems River from Papenburg to Emden. The journey started with the Papenburg dock lock, and by noon the vessel passed the Friesen Bridge near Weener. Overnight she reached the Ems Barrage near Gandersum before heading to Eemshaven, Netherlands, where she remained for final outfitting. The ship made the voyage stern-first, assisted by tugboats. The schedule was:
- March 30 (~12:15 pm) Friesen Bridge passage (near Weener)
- March 30 (~3:30 pm) Jann-Berghaus Bridge passage (near Leer)
- March 31 (~12:30 am) Ems Barrage passage (near Gandersum)
- March 31 (~2:30 am) arrival at Port Emden
On January 22, 2019, Port Canaveral officials met to discuss docking arrangements for the new liners at Disney’s exclusive Cruise Terminal 8. The terminal was upgraded to berth the three new ships simultaneously. With scheduled deliveries in 2022 (Wish), 2024 (Treasure), and 2025 (Destiny), each with ~1250 staterooms, Terminal 8 was expanded to handle up to 7500 passengers at once.
DCL's TRITON-class liners measure 341 m (1119 ft) LOA, making them the fleet’s longest. With gross tonnage of ~144,000 GT and passenger capacity of 2500 (max 3500), they are similar in size to Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, but are LNG-powered and outfitted with additional facilities and amenities. By 2025, Disney will nearly double its fleet from four to seven ships.
On March 9, 2018, Disney released the ship’s first exterior rendering, showcasing the company’s traditional black-white-red hull with a new golden flair on the superstructure. Between the two funnels is the top-deck waterpark with slides. Midship placement of balcony cabins allows for larger staterooms.
The class name "Disney Triton" was inspired by Triton, the ancient Greek god of the sea, son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. Depicted as a merman with a conch shell, he could calm or raise the seas. In Disney’s story, King Triton is Ariel’s protective father in "The Little Mermaid" and one of Disney’s most powerful characters.
Disney Wish was officially delivered by Meyer Werft to DCL on June 9, 2022, at Port Bremerhaven. The ceremony was attended by Thomas Mazloum (DCL President), Jan Meyer (Meyer Werft Managing Director), and Henning Stellermann (Meyer Werft Project Manager).
After delivery, the ship departed Bremerhaven on June 9 and stopped at Ponta Delgada, Azores, for bunkering on June 13 before completing her Transatlantic crossing to Port Canaveral, arriving on June 20.
In 2019 it was announced that Disney Wish and Disney Treasure would be homeported at Port Canaveral for their inaugural Caribbean seasons, while Disney Destiny would homeport in PortMiami. In both ports, LNG bunkering barges fuel the vessels dockside.
In late April 2021, DCL released the first episode of the "Designing the Disney Wish" video series, highlighting the ship’s design, characters, and features. The hull artwork features Captain Minnie Mouse on the bow and Rapunzel on the stern. Interior design themes include fairytale castles (Grand Hall atrium), forests and animals, and the spirit of the sea. The three-deck Grand Hall (midship atrium) features a grand staircase, a bronze Cinderella statue at the lobby level, and a chandelier with thousands of crystals and a large “wishing star.”
Ship christening 2022
In June 2022, DCL announced that Disney Wish would have godchildren instead of a traditional godmother or godfather. The honor went to children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a US non-profit organization founded in 1980 to grant wishes for children with critical illnesses (wish.org).
During the naming ceremony, the children recited the traditional blessings. The Disney-Make-A-Wish partnership also included fleetwide Disney-themed merchandise, with 10% of sales donated to the charity.
The christening took place on June 30 at Port Canaveral and was attended by Bob Chapek (Disney CEO) and Josh D’Amaro (Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products). Anika Noni Rose (voice of Princess Tiana in Disney’s 2009 film "The Princess and the Frog") performed live alongside characters from Toy Story, Frozen, Marvel, and Star Wars.
Toward the end of the ceremony, three Make-A-Wish children delivered the traditional ship blessing.
