MSC Explora 4 Review

Review of MSC Explora 4

The 2027-built MSC Explora 4 cruise ship (officially "Explora IV") is the fourth in a series of six MSC EXPLORA-class expedition ships, with fleetmates Explora 1 (2023), Explora 2 (2024), Explora 3 (2026/sistership), Explora 5 (2027), and Explora 6 (2028). These vessels are owned by the MSC Group and operated as a separate fleet under MSC’s luxury brand EXPLORA JOURNEYS.

The vessel (IMO number 9869904) will be Malta-flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Valletta. Delivery is currently scheduled for April 2026.

History – construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is headquartered in Genoa and Naples. Established in 1960, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) – the world’s second-largest container shipping company. MSC is also the world’s largest privately owned cruise company.

By annual passenger volumes, MSC ranks as the world’s third-largest cruise shipowner, following Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group.

MSC Explora 4 cruise ship (MSC Explora Journeys)

MSC’s EXPLORA ships offer extensive indoor public spaces and more than 2500 m2 (~27,000 ft2) of outdoor deck areas. Facilities include a spacious Sundeck with 64 private cabanas, three outdoor swimming pools (two aft and one forward), plus a midship pool covered by a retractable glass roof (two-deck sunbathing area, LED screen used for movies and real-time sea views); multiple Jacuzzies (indoor and outdoor spa pools/whirlpools, including one crew pool); and numerous open-air dining and lounging areas. Guests enjoy nine dining venues (restaurants and food bars) plus 24-hour in-suite dining.

Explora IV’s wellness complex exceeds 700 m2 (7500+ ft2) and includes an indoor-outdoor Spa (nine treatment rooms, Thermal Suites, Beauty Salon) and a 270+ m2 (2900+ ft2) Gym equipped with the latest fitness technology, along with a separate Fitness Studio for group classes and personal training. A Running Track encircles the Deck 12 sunbathing area.

The passenger-to-crew ratio of 1.25 ensures highly attentive and personalized service.

MSC Explora 4 Wiki

The vessel (Fincantieri Monfalcone Shipyard, hull number 6322) has a volume of 63,900 GT, a deadweight capacity of 7,500 tons, and a maximum draught of 7 m. The powerplant consists of four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 8L46F) with a combined output of 38.4 MW (51,500 hp). Propulsion is provided by a PEM fuel-cell–battery hybrid system driving two motors with a combined output of 20 MW (26,820 hp). The registered shipowner is MSC CROCIERE S.p.A., and the registered manager is MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING CO.

In January 2018, strong rumors emerged that MSC was considering the establishment of a new all-inclusive luxury cruise brand. Another possibility discussed at the time was creating a parallel “expedition” fleet under MSC Cruises. In 2020, it was confirmed that MSC would proceed with a completely new luxury brand.

On October 18, 2018, the MSC Group and Fincantieri signed an MoA (Memorandum of Agreement) for the construction of four ultra-luxury ships, with a contract value of EUR 2.0 billion (~USD 2.3B / ~GBP 1.75B). The announcement stated that the first unit would be delivered in Q2 2023 and that the design was based on a ~64,000-GT vessel with a capacity of 500 staterooms.

  • The final MSC–Fincantieri shipbuilding contract for the four luxury expedition ships was signed on March 14, 2019.
  • Both agreements were signed by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Executive Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri CEO).
  • With this order, MSC’s Fincantieri-built ships increased to 17 units (EUR 14.96 billion total investment / ~USD 17.27B / ~GBP 13.6B), all scheduled for delivery by 2027. By that year, MSC’s cruise fleet will total 29 vessels.

The collective investment for the four units (~EUR 2.3 billion) was projected to generate a significant economic impact of EUR 10+ billion on the Italian economy, including employment gains. Each ship requires more than 7 million man-hours of labor and an average workforce of ~2,500 individuals over a construction period of 2+ years.

MSC Explora-Class cruise ship (Explora Journeys)

The rumors were officially confirmed in March 2021 when the senior management team of the new brand was announced.

  • Michael Ungerer (CEO), Chris Austin (CSO – Chief Sales Officer)
  • Sarah Doyle (CMO – Chief Marketing Officer)
  • Thatcher Brown (Commercial and Strategic Advisor), John Stoll (Destination Experience Advisor)
  • Sacha Rougier (Itinerary Planning & Shore Experience)
  • Prior to joining MSC, Chris Austin worked for Seabourn (SVP Global Sales & Marketing); Sarah Doyle for Bacardi Europe (VP Marketing); Thatcher Brown for GHK Dream Cruises (President) and Crystal Cruises Asia (Managing Director); Sacha Rougier for Cruise Gate Hamburg/Center Steinwerder (Managing Director); and John Stoll for Crystal Cruises and Silversea (Director Land Programs).

EXPLORA 4’s construction officially began on September 12, 2024, with the steel-cutting ceremony at Cantieri Navali di Sestri (Genoa). On the same day, EXPLORA 2 was delivered, and the keel-laying ceremony for EXPLORA 3 took place. The triple ceremony was attended by MSC executives (Pierfrancesco Vago, Stefania Vago) and Fincantieri executives (Biagio Mazzotta, Pierroberto Folgiero).

The troncone (the forward lower hull section) was launched/floated out from the drydock at Fincantieri’s Palermo yard on April 3, 2025. After outfitting, the bow section will be towed to Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente Yard for final assembly and integration.

EXPLORA 4’s physical construction/assembly began on July 14, 2025. On the same day at Sestri Ponente, the float-out ceremony of EXPLORA 3 and the steel-cutting ceremony of EXPLORA 5 were also held.

MSC EXPLORA ship technology

All ships for the Explora Journeys brand are constructed at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone Shipyard (near Trieste, Italy).

With the steel-cutting for Explora I (June 10, 2021), MSC officially launched its new expedition luxury brand “Explora Journeys.” The brand’s mandala-inspired logo was designed by Alexa Aponte-Vago (MSC Group CFO, daughter of MSC founder Gianluigi Aponte, and wife of Pierfrancesco Vago).

MSC Explora Journeys logo

Explora Journeys’ vessels incorporate the cruise industry’s latest environmental technologies and are engineered to adopt future alternative energy solutions (hybrid powerplants) when they become widely available.

The MSC EXPLORA-class ship design includes provisions for onboard battery storage (supporting hybrid propulsion) and the latest SCR systems (Selective Catalytic Reduction) that reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90%. Additional environmental and energy-saving features include an optimized hydrodynamic hull (with anti-fouling coating), a smart HVAC system, a USCG-approved ballast water treatment plant, an advanced wastewater treatment system, LED lighting throughout, and CII Trim Optimization software (improving trim and draft efficiency to reduce fuel consumption by up to 3%).

The ships are equipped with shoreside power capabilities (eliminating CO emissions while berthed) and advanced underwater noise reduction systems (protecting marine life). All EXPLORA ships feature a wide range of energy-efficient systems to optimize engine load and further reduce emissions.

Explora 1 and 2 are powered by marine diesel engines running on LSFO (low-sulfur fuel oil). Explora 3 and 4 have LNG engines, while Explora 5 and 6 combine LNG engines with hydrogen powerplants (fuel-cell technology). All vessels are RINA-certified (RINA DOLPHIN) for reduced underwater noise and vibration. In line with MSC’s sustainability policies, single-use plastics are not used onboard or ashore.

In late September 2020, Versonix Seaware announced that MSC’s new brand would use the Versonix system for online cruise bookings. Annually, Versonix supports more than 20 million passengers and 100+ ships. Founded in 1986, Versonix is a Silicon Valley company (headquartered in San Jose, CA, USA) specializing in hotel and resort reservation technologies. The company is led by Victor Velton (President) and Yuri Polissky (CEO).

In July 2022, MSC signed a contract with SES S.A. (Luxembourg-based satellite and terrestrial telecommunications operator) to provide “O3b mPower” satellite connectivity to the Explora Journeys fleet. O3b mPower integrates SES’s second-generation MEO satellites (~8,000 km / ~5,000 mi altitude) with its GEO satellites (~35,800 km / 22,300 mi altitude).

On July 6, 2022, an MoA was signed for two additional EXPLORA ships (Explora 5 and Explora 6), both LNG- and hydrogen-powered. The hydrogen system includes liquid-hydrogen containment tanks and a 6-MW fuel cell to supply electricity for all hotel operations. With Explora 5 (2027) and Explora 6 (2028), MSC’s total investment in Explora Journeys reached EUR 3.5 billion.

The initial cost per EXPLORA-class vessel was EUR 495 million (USD 600M). However, unlike the first pair of sisterships (Explora 1 and Explora 2), the second pair (Explora 3 and Explora 4) have a higher construction cost—EUR 615 million (USD 730M), or +EUR 120M each—due to the LNG engines and related design changes. This also caused delivery delays: Explora 3 and 4 were rescheduled for 2026 (from 2025) and 2027 (from 2026), respectively.
