SS Marlene Review

Review of SS Marlene

The 2027-built SS Marlene cruise ship is owned by Uniworld (officially "Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection"), a brand of The Travel Corporation (TTC). The newbuild riverboat, featuring several fleet-first design elements and amenities, is part of Uniworld's "Super Ships" fleet (abbreviated as S.S.). Marlene's sisterships are SS Emilie (2026) and SS Audrey (2027).

This is Uniworld's 16th European riverboat, expanding the global fleet to 21 vessels. With SS Marlene, Uniworld's "Super Ships" fleet grows to 12 units.

Uniworld's SS Marlene sails on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, departing from homeports in the Netherlands (Amsterdam), Belgium (Antwerp), Germany (Passau, Regensburg), Hungary (Budapest), Romania (Bucharest), and Czechia (Prague).

The vessel (ENI number TBA) will be Switzerland-flagged (MMSI TBA) and registered in Basel.

The riverboat is named after Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich (1901–1992), a German-born American actress and singer. Her most iconic film is "The Blue Angel" (1930), in which she played Lola Lola and introduced her signature song, "Falling in Love Again (Can't Help It)".

Decks and cabins

SS Marlene has a total of 77 cabins (in 6 categories), including 2x Grand Suites (38 m2/410 ft2), 8x French Balcony Suites (27 m2/285 ft2), 55x French Balcony cabins (18-21 m2/195-225 ft2), and 12x Classic cabins (16 m2/175 ft2, each with one large upper window at water level).

All passenger staterooms include standard/complimentary amenities such as handcrafted Savoir Beds of England with luxury bedding, a built-in wardrobe, digital safe (in the closet), individual thermostat, TV with infotainment system, and a marble bathroom (WC, single-sink vanity, Asprey bath and body products, plush towels, towel warmer, heated LED mirror, backlit magnifying mirror, hairdryer, bathrobes, and slippers).

Additional suite amenities and services include butler service (dining assistance, packing and unpacking, in-cabin breakfast, daily fruit and cookie service, evening snacks, shoeshine, and complimentary laundry), Nespresso coffee machine, specialty teas, fully stocked minibar, and a bottle of wine (upon request).

The largest accommodations (Grand Suites) also feature enlarged bathrooms with double-sink vanities, a rain shower, and a bathtub.

The vessel has 4 decks, of which 3 are fitted with passenger cabins.

Ship review (facilities and amenities)

SS Marlene is a boutique hotel-style riverboat showcasing the classic elegance of Art Deco design inspired by the golden era of the 1920s–1930s.

The vessel offers gourmet dining venues, modern wellness facilities, and contemporary staterooms, reflecting Uniworld's standards for luxury hospitality, professional service, and immersive travel experiences.

One elevator (midship passenger lift) connects all cabin decks.

Below is an overview of all venues and amenities by deck.

DANAE DECK (1st floor)

All crew cabins, along with the crew lounge and dining facilities, are located aft of the midship passenger staterooms. Further aft are the engine room and propulsion systems.

All service and storage areas are located forward of the passenger staterooms, including the vessel's water storage and ballast tanks.

The Laundry Room is a self-service facility equipped with a washing machine (detergent provided), dryer, and ironing board.

Adjacent to the Guest Laundry is The Gold Room, a private dining and event venue available for celebrations and special occasions.

Danae Deck accommodates Classic Cabins numbered 201 through 212.

ATHENE DECK (2nd floor)

Gustav's Restaurant is an open-seating main dining room with single-seating capacity, offering classic European cuisine as well as regional specialties. Dishes are prepared using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. The décor features floor-to-ceiling windows, an elegant chandelier, and comfortable leather seating. The restaurant is waiter-served and operates on scheduled dining times aligned with the daily itinerary.

Breakfast (7:00–9:00 am) is buffet-style, with cereals, breads, cheeses, cold cuts, fruits, yogurt, smoothies, and sausages, as well as made-to-order eggs and omelets prepared by a chef (included in the fare). Lunch (12:30–2:00 pm) features soups, carvery, salad bar, hot dishes, pasta, sandwiches, desserts, and local specialties. Dinner (from 7:00–7:30 pm, following the Main Lounge cocktail hour) is a waiter-served, four-course experience available until 9:00 pm, with a selection of starters, soups, main courses (fish, meat, vegetarian), desserts, and cheese plates. Complimentary wines reflect the regions visited, and alternative options such as steak and chicken are available upon request. À la carte menus are also offered at breakfast and lunch, with vegan and vegetarian options available at all meals.

The dining room also hosts formal events such as the Captain's Welcome and Farewell dinners, where the dress code is elegant casual (jackets and ties for men, cocktail attire for women).

The Boutique Shop offers luxury jewelry and watches, branded merchandise, and locally sourced gifts and souvenirs.

The Lobby area includes the Reception Desk (24-hour service), information on daily activities, spa/sauna reservations, and assistance with shore excursions and onboard bookings. The Cruise Director is also available here and organizes onboard experiences such as galley tours and cooking demonstrations.

A 24-hour self-service tea and coffee station in the Lobby provides complimentary beverages and light snacks (cookies and candies).

The Lobby Hall forms part of the Atrium, an open-space design connecting Decks 2 and 3 via a grand staircase.

Athene Deck accommodates French Balcony cabins numbered 301 through 337.

ADELE DECK (3rd floor)

The Belvedere Lounge (Main Lounge & Bar) features a dance floor and hosts evening entertainment, including live music performances and local acts. It also serves as the venue for Uniworld's enrichment program, including lectures, cultural presentations, and culinary demonstrations. Daily briefings by the Cruise Director provide information about upcoming shore excursions.

Aft is the vessel's wellness complex, which includes the Serenity River Spa (offering massages and beauty treatments) and the Fitness Center.

The Brocade Bar is an intimate aft lounge with both indoor seating and an outdoor terrace overlooking the stern.

Adele Deck accommodates French Balcony cabins numbered 401 through 431, including the two Grand Suites and eight Suites.

SUN DECK (4th floor)

The forward-located Navigation Bridge (wheelhouse) is passenger-accessible and telescopic, allowing it to be lowered when passing under low bridges.

A bike station provides complimentary bicycles and Nordic walking sticks for use during shore excursions and independent exploration. All bicycles are equipped with locks, and helmets are available upon request.

The Sky Lounge (added during a prior fleet refurbishment concept) is designed as a conservatory-style café with a retractable roof, glass walls, live plants, and both indoor and outdoor seating. It also serves as an alternative dining venue offering light fare such as pizzas, pasta, salads, soups, and sandwiches, as well as hosting brunches and cocktail events.

The Sun Deck is an outdoor relaxation area (accessible by stairs only) with sun loungers, shaded seating under retractable awnings, and tables with chairs. It also features a games area with shuffleboard and a giant chessboard. This deck serves as the designated smoking area and provides unobstructed panoramic views along the itinerary. Weather permitting, complimentary fitness classes such as yoga, aerobics, and Zumba are held here.
