Tallink Romantika ferry Review

Review of Tallink Romantika ferry

MS Tallink Romantika ferry is a Ro-Ro passenger vessel operated by the Estonia-based company TALLINK-SILJA LINE. The ship has a maximum capacity of 2,500 passengers and 300 cars (or 60 trucks/trailers). The vessel was launched in 2002 and currently operates on the Latvia-Sweden ferry route Riga-Stockholm (crossing time 17 hours).

NEWS: Since April 2022, the ship has been bareboat chartered for 3 years (through April 2025) by the startup ferry brand "Holland Norway Lines BV" (founded in 2020). The new brand operates the Netherlands-Norway route Eemshaven-Kristiansand (crossing time ~18 hours). Romantika's Riga-Stockholm schedule was assigned to fleetmate Tallink Isabelle.

Tallink Romantika's maiden voyage on the route was scheduled for April 7, 2022, departing from Eemshaven.

  • The ship departs Eemshaven at 3 PM (on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays) and arrives in Kristiansand at 9 AM the following day. The return crossing departs Kristiansand at 3 PM (on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays).
  • Eemshaven provides quick road access to Amsterdam (2 hours), Berlin (6 hours), and Paris (7 hours).
  • Kristiansand provides quick road access to Oslo (3.5 hours), Stavanger (4 hours), and Bergen (8 hours).

Holland Norway Lines opened sales on November 3, 2021. Early bird tickets were priced at EUR 200 per person.

Prior to the charter, from March 8 to 21, 2022, the vessel was drydocked at Turku Ship Repair Yard (Naantali, Finland). The drydocking included technical upgrades, underwater hull work, propulsion system maintenance (shaft seals, shell valves, pumps, coolers, bow thrusters, gearboxes), stabilizers, and a new Ballast Water Treatment System.

Tallink Romantika ferry Wiki

The shipbuilding contract for Tallink Romantika was signed on August 30, 2000. Construction of the vessel began on May 23, 2001, with the keel-laying at Aker Yards in Rauma, Finland. The ship was launched and christened on December 14, 2001, delivered to TALLINK on May 10, 2002, and entered service on May 21.

The ship is powered by four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 16V32) with a combined output of 26.2 MW. Her hull is ice-strengthened to class 1A Super, allowing year-round operations on Baltic Sea routes in severe ice conditions.

From 2002 to 2006, the ferry operated on the Finland-Estonia route Helsinki-Tallinn. In 2006, she was replaced by Silja Galaxy and redeployed to the Tallinn-Stockholm route, where she operated together with fleetmate Victoria 1. In May 2009, the ferry was deployed on the Sweden-Latvia route Stockholm-Riga. From August 2014 through December 2016, the ship operated on the Stockholm-Aland (Mariehamn)-Tallinn route.

From January 13 to 24, 2020, the vessel underwent drydock refurbishment at Nauta Shipyard in Gdynia, Poland. The project included scheduled maintenance and technical work, including the installation of shoreside-power capability, as well as extensive renovations to several venues and common areas, including corridors and stairways. The buffet restaurant (Grande Buffet), cafe bistro (Coffee & Co), and pub lounge (Seapub) were completely overhauled. Smaller refurbishments were carried out in the Grill House, Russian Restaurant, and Disco Nightclub, including new flooring and furniture.

In summer 2020, Tallink scheduled two special roundtrip cruises for Romantika from Riga to Helsinki, Finland (docking at Olympia Terminal), with departure dates on July 24 and August 7. Both voyages departed from Riga at 4 PM and from Helsinki at 7 PM.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis and reduced passenger shipping traffic in the Baltic, the cruise ship was temporarily deployed in the Mediterranean from July through September to serve the France-Morocco route Sete-Tanger Med.

All Tallink ships are regularly updated and refurbished, with each vessel undergoing two refurbishments every five years. From 2015 to 2020, the company invested approximately EUR 90 million in fleetwide renovations.
