AIDAstella Review

Review of AIDAstella

The 2013-built AIDAstella cruise ship is the seventh and final Sphinx-class AIDA liner, with sister ships AIDAblu, AIDAsol, and AIDAmar.

The vessel (IMO number 9601132) is currently Italy-flagged (MMSI 247322800) and registered in Genova.

History - construction and ownership

AIDA Cruises is a Rostock-headquartered subsidiary of Carnival Corporation. AIDA is Europe's largest German cruise line (followed by TUI), targeting younger and more active travelers. AIDA was founded in 1960 as "Deutsche Seereederei" and was acquired in 2000 by P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation (the current owner) in 2003. AIDA's first World Cruise (with AIDAcara) took place in 2017-2018 (October to February), featuring a 116-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg, Germany.

AIDAstella cruise ship

The 2,200-passenger AIDAstella was not operational until March 17, 2013. She was christened at the port of Warnemunde by 10 godmothers. AIDAstella embarked on her maiden cruise from Hamburg to Las Palmas, with ports of call including Dover, Le Havre, Santander, La Coruna, Cadiz, Casablanca, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Las Palmas. The christening ceremony took place in the ship's Theatrium. The selection of 10 godmothers was a gesture of appreciation for those involved in the shipbuilding process. Eight were female crew members representing different nationalities and departments within AIDA. One represented Jos L Meyer (the shipbuilder), and one represented Partner Ship Design (the ship’s designers).

In addition to the ship's staff and crew, AIDA cruise passengers are assisted by Pepper robots—cutting-edge humanoid robots introduced fleetwide in 2016. These robots greet and guide passengers during embarkation and provide ongoing assistance throughout the voyage, offering information and tips on dining, entertainment, enrichment programs (such as workshops and scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, and shore excursions. Pepper robots are mobile, communicate in three languages (English, German, Italian), and can interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

AIDAstella Wiki

The vessel (Meyer Werft Papenburg yard/hull) has a volume of 71,304 GT, a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 7,833 tons, and a maximum draught of 7.3 m. The powerplant is based on MAK Caterpillar marine diesel engines (model 9M43C) with a combined output of 36 MW. The propulsion system utilizes VEM ELEKTROMOTORENWERK electric motors (model DTMSZ 3352-16YS) with a total output of 25 MW. The registered shipowner is COSTA CROCIERE S.p.A., and the registered and ISM Manager is CARNIVAL MARITIME GmbH.

AIDAstella is the seventh liner in the Sphinx-class series of AIDA Kreuzfahrten and the fleet's tenth vessel. She was christened on March 16, 2013, in Warnemunde, Germany. AIDAstella features innovative ballast tanks designed to retain all micro-organisms when emptied in ports worldwide—making her the first ship ever equipped with such a system. For interior illumination, the ship uses 1,200 meters of flexible LED modules and 9,000 halogen Eco lamps supplied by Osram.

On November 23, 2015, AIDAstella became the first Carnival Corporation vessel to dock at the newly constructed Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal (Mina Zayed). This UAE port serves as a key homeport/turnaround port in the Red Sea region, with a total of 60 calls scheduled in 2016, including 40 by AIDA ships (23 of which were by AIDAstella). These visits were part of her 2015-2016 schedule of 7-day roundtrip cruises from Dubai to Muscat (Oman) and Mina Salman (Bahrain).

AIDAstella refurbishments review

The ship's 5-day drydock in 2018 (March 3-8, in Dubai, UAE) resulted in the following deck plan updates:

  • Eisbar by Langnese Happiness Station (ice cream bar) was added on Deck 11, allowing passengers to create custom treats from various ingredients. Options include swirls, soft-serve, and Carte d'Or premium ice creams.
  • A new gaming room was added to the Teen Club on Deck 12.
  • The Body & Soul SPA complex on Deck 12 received new flooring.
  • All public areas were upgraded with new energy-efficient LED lighting and approximately 3,500 m² (37,700 ft²) of new carpeting.

The 5-day contract with Drydocks World shipyard also included general maintenance and routine classification work.
