Budapest is a Danube River cruise port in Hungary. River's most operated cruise itineraries are between Budapest and Bucharest. The longest itineraries are from Holland (Amsterdam), including cruising on Danube, Main and Rhine. Budapest is Hungary's main (largest) cruise port and biggest tourism industry contributor. Each year, the city attracts over 4,5 million tourists, ranking it world's 25th most popular and Europe's 6th most popular city tour destination.

Budapest is Hungary's capital and largest city (population around 1,8 million, metro over 3,3 million), as well as country's commercial, industrial and transportation hub. On November 17, 1873, it became a single city occupying both banks of Danube River and merging three cities (Obuda, Buda, Pest).

Originally a Celtic settlement, during the Roman Empire it became the capital of Lower Pannonia. In the 9th century Hungarians arrived. Their first settlement was pillaged by the Mongols in 124–242. Next dark period was the Battle of Mohacs and the following 150 year Ottoman rule. Budapest was the Austro-Hungarian Empire's second capital (together with Vienna).

Among city's most popular tourist landmarks are Buda Castle Quarter, Heroes' Square, Millennium Underground Railway, 118 geothermal springs (world's largest thermal water cave system), Dohany Street Synagogue (aka Nagy Zsinagoga, world's 2nd largest - after Belz Great Synagogue in Jerusalem), Hungarian Parliament Building (world's 3rd largest).

On shore excursions (bus tours from Budapest/riverboat's homeport) can be also visited Slovenia's capital Ljubljana, as well as Croatia's capital Zagreb.

Budapest cruise terminal

Budapest port’s parking area has max capacity of 100 cars. The distance from the port nad the city center is approx 5 km (3 ml). The nearest airport is the Ferihegy International Airport - at approx 20-min drive distance from the cruise ship terminal.

Popular tourist attractions located near the port are the Buda Castle, old bridges (called hidak), St Stephen’s Basilica (height 96 m / 315 ft), many bathhouses with therapeutic spring water.

  • Among the hotels located near the port are Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal (5-star), Hotel Rila (budget priced), Parliament Hotel, K+K Opera Hotel.
  • Pop[ular restaurants located near the port are Gerbaud House, Fatal Restaurant, Karpatia Etterem.
  • Pop[ular shopping centers located near the port are Folk Arts Gallery (hand-made souvenirs, wooden toys, traditional Hungarian dolls) and the Arkad shopping mall.

Budapest is well suited to a river-cruise call, with waterfront views, central Pest and the hilltop Castle District offering different ways to spend your time. Easy independently from central berths; independent with some planning or transport from more distant docks. For a short visit, choose central Pest or the Castle District rather than trying to cover the whole city.

Getting from the River-Cruise Port

River-cruise ships dock alongside the Danube rather than tendering ashore. Budapest has several docking locations on both banks, including the MAHART International Ship Station on Belgrád rakpart in central Pest. Your ship may use another berth, so confirm the actual gangway location before planning a walk or booking transport.

From central Belgrád rakpart berths, the Danube promenade, Váci utca and the Central Market Hall are practical walking destinations. Depending on your berth, allow roughly 10–25 minutes to reach these areas. Ships farther north or south may require a tram, taxi or cruise-arranged transfer. Shuttle provision varies; check with the ship.

Use designated crossings to reach street level from the quay. Gangway gradients and steps can affect accessibility. For taxis, give the driver the exact pier name and riverbank, rather than simply “Budapest cruise port.”

BudapestGO provides public-transport journey planning and ticket purchasing. Validate single tickets correctly before travelling; buying a ticket alone does not activate it. [BKK ticket guidance](https://bkk.hu/en/visiting-budapest/tickets-and-passes/)

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Central Pest: Promenade, Market and Cafés

Allow 2–3 hours; easy independently from central Pest berths. Combine the Danube promenade with pedestrian Váci utca and the Central Market Hall at Fővám tér. The market is useful for browsing Hungarian food products and choosing a snack, while the waterfront offers views across to Buda Castle. Check market opening arrangements for your visit, particularly on Sundays and holidays.

This is the simplest option for a short call: mostly flat walking, frequent places to stop and an easy return to central berths.

Buda Castle District and Fisherman’s Bastion

Allow 3–4 hours including access from central Pest; independent with transport or a hill climb. Focus on Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion and the historic streets around Szentháromság tér, then continue toward the Royal Palace area if time permits. The terraces provide views of Parliament and the Danube.

Use a bus or taxi to reach the upper district if you want to avoid the climb. Walking uphill involves slopes, steps and uneven paving; the funicular can involve queues. Church visits, museums and terrace access may require separate tickets. Construction can alter access around the palace, so keep this visit flexible.

Parliament and the Northern Pest Waterfront

Allow 2–3 hours for an exterior visit and waterfront walk. Explore Kossuth Lajos tér, admire Parliament’s exterior and visit the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial nearby. Continue to St. Stephen’s Basilica if your remaining time allows. This works independently, with walking or public transport depending on your berth.

Parliament’s interior requires a timed tour. The visit lasts approximately 45 minutes; reserve ahead and allow additional time for arrival and security. Without a reservation, treat the building as an exterior stop. [Official Parliament visitor information](https://www.parlament.hu/web/visitors/purchasing-tickets)

City Park and Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Allow 4–5 hours including transport for a bath visit. This is a practical alternative to a full sightseeing circuit, rather than an extra stop on a rushed itinerary. Metro M1 provides access to the City Park area, where Heroes’ Square and Vajdahunyad Castle can also be viewed.

Bring swimwear, a towel and slippers, and include changing time in your plan. Check current pool availability and admission conditions before booking. If time is tight, explore Heroes’ Square and the park instead of entering the baths. [Official bath guidance](https://www.szechenyibath.hu/faq)

Self-Guided Walking Tours

Easy: Southern Pest Loop

Start and finish: Vigadó tér, reached on foot from a nearby central berth or by transport from another docking location. Approximately 3 km (1.9 mi), with 45–60 minutes of pure walking; allow 2–3 hours including browsing and a café stop. Mostly flat, with some cobbles and busy crossings.

  1. Vigadó tér: Start beside the concert hall and river promenade.
  2. Danube promenade: Walk south, enjoying views of Castle Hill across the river.
  3. Március 15. tér: Pause around the square and Inner City Parish Church.
  4. Fővám tér: Continue south toward Liberty Bridge.
  5. Central Market Hall: Browse inside if open; allow 30–45 minutes.
  6. Váci utca: Walk north along the pedestrian shopping street.
  7. Vörösmarty tér: Stop for a café break, then return to Vigadó tér.

The route length excludes travel from your ship. If docked on Belgrád rakpart, join at the nearest point and finish close to your gangway.

Moderate: Castle District Walk

Start: Szentháromság tér, after travelling uphill by bus or taxi. Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi), with 45–60 minutes of pure walking; allow 2–3 hours for views and stops, excluding transport. Expect cobbles, slopes and occasional steps.

  1. Szentháromság tér: Begin at the square beside Matthias Church.
  2. Matthias Church: View the exterior or make a separately ticketed visit.
  3. Fisherman’s Bastion: Stop for views across the Danube.
  4. Úri utca: Explore the quieter historic street.
  5. Dísz tér: Continue toward the southern part of the district.
  6. Royal Palace area: Visit accessible courtyards and viewpoints, following any construction diversions.

Return by bus or taxi from an accessible pickup point. Fit walkers can descend toward Clark Ádám tér, but the downhill route adds walking and may involve stairs. Allow separately for the journey back to your berth.

Nature and Organized Excursions

Margaret Island offers a quieter alternative, with park paths, gardens and medieval ruins. Allow 2–3 hours on the island plus access from your berth. A short walk around its southern section is more manageable than attempting the entire island during a brief call.

A guided city excursion is useful if you want to combine Buda and Pest with fewer transport decisions or reduced uphill walking. Trips outside Budapest, including Szentendre and the Danube Bend, are better suited to a long call with carefully arranged transport. An organized excursion is preferable when substantial travel would leave little return margin.

Returning to the Ship

  • Confirm the all-aboard time and whether the ship will remain at the same berth throughout your visit.
  • Keep the pier name, ship contact number and a map pin for the actual gangway.
  • For central independent sightseeing, aim to return at least 45–60 minutes before all aboard; increase the margin for distant berths, cross-city travel or excursions outside Budapest.
  • Avoid placing a timed attraction or lengthy meal at the end of your itinerary. Traffic, transport disruption and queues can consume your remaining time.
