Viking Gefjon Review

Review of Viking Gefjon

The 2015-built Longship Viking Gefjon cruises on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, visiting Holland, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, and Czechia.

This Viking longship is named after Gefjon (Gefjun), meaning "giver" or "the giving one"—a giantess and goddess in Norse mythology associated with divine foreknowledge and intuition. Goddess Gefjon is also linked to virginity and is regarded as the protector of unmarried women and young girls.

Join the 2015 Viking Gefjon Grand European Tour for 15 enjoyable days along the Main, Danube, and Rhine rivers. Guests can experience Holland’s windmills and tulip fields, Germany’s fairytale castles, and the vineyards of Austria’s Wachau Valley. Another option is the Romantic Danube itinerary, featuring an 8-day voyage along the “Blue Danube”, with highlights including Budapest, scenic cruising through Austria’s Wachau Valley, and Vienna’s imperial architecture.

Gefjon is believed to have created the Danish island of Zealand, earning her respect among the gods. Like Odin, she is said to know the destinies of humankind.

Cabins

Viking Gefjon has a total of 95 cabins (including 9 Suites, 22 French Balcony staterooms, and 25 with non-opening windows) across 8 categories. The ship features the same design elements as other Viking Longships, offering deluxe accommodations, streamlined Scandinavian interiors, and advanced engineering. The vessel includes two Explorer Suites—the largest on European rivers—as well as seven Veranda Suites (two-room units with a veranda and a French balcony). The 39 Veranda Staterooms feature full-size balconies, complemented by 22 French Balcony staterooms. All Viking Longships, including Viking Gefjon, are equipped with organic herb gardens and solar panels. Their hybrid engines are energy-efficient and reduce vibrations for a smoother ride.

Additional facilities include an Observation Lounge, Atrium (lobby), Library (with Internet access), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), and a Sun Deck with a shaded seating area, Sky Bar, Herbal Garden, putting green, walking track, and shuffleboard. The Gefjon longship does not feature a gym, pool, jacuzzi, or spa.

Viking Gefjon cruise fares are inclusive of Wi-Fi Internet, all shore excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and daily replenished bottled water.

Viking Gefjon Wiki

Transfers to/from the Viking Gefjon and airport meet-and-greet services are included in the cruise fare only when airfare is purchased through the Viking cruise line.

Viking Gefjon is part of the latest-generation Viking Cruises longships. This patented Viking river cruise ship design allows for larger accommodations without reducing the size of public areas or compromising overall onboard comfort. The vessel represents the line’s modern Longship-class design. Viking Cruises longships feature energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and interior design by Yran & Storbraaten (Norway). The patented “longship” concept by Rottet Studios (USA) enables significantly larger passenger accommodations with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the corridor off-center by 1 m (3.3 ft).

The riverboat’s godmother is Mrs. Verona Thiele, one of the line’s long-serving employees (Concierge). Other Viking Cruises longships launched in 2015 include Astrild, Beyla, Eir, Lofn, Mani, Mimir, Modi, Skirnir, Ve, Vidar, and Vili.
