Viking Egil Review
Review of Viking Egil
The 2016-built Longship Viking Egil cruises on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers across Austria, Germany, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. This Viking longship is named after Egil (Agilaz), a legendary archer and hero from the poem Volundarkvida. He was the son of a Finnish king. Together with his Valkyrie wife Alruna (Ailrun), daughter of King Kiar of Valir, he defended a stronghold against numerous attackers.
Viking Egil is among the newer longships in the Viking River Cruises fleet. The riverboat features a patented corridor configuration, modern engineering and technologies, signature Scandinavian-themed decor, premium stateroom amenities, itinerary-based and expert-led enrichment programs, themed onboard entertainment, efficient use of public spaces, the signature Aquavit Terrace lounge, and numerous cabins with step-out balconies. Each Viking Longship-class vessel also includes two of the European river cruise industry’s largest suites.

The vessel (ENI number 7002039) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057551) and registered in Basel.
Cabins
Viking Egil has a total of 95 staterooms (including 9 Suites, 39 Balcony cabins, 22 French Balcony cabins, and 25 with non-opening windows). The ship features the same design elements as other Viking Longships, offering deluxe accommodations, streamlined Scandinavian interiors, and advanced engineering. Guests can choose from 8 stateroom categories, all with upscale amenities. Suites provide two full rooms, a private veranda, a French balcony, spacious closets, hotel-style beds, and 42-inch flat-screen TVs. All cabins accommodate a maximum of 2 guests, and approximately 75% feature a balcony.
Cabin types and categories (number, location), from highest to lowest:
- Suites – Veranda AA (x7, Deck 3), Explorer ES (x2, Deck 3)
- Balcony Staterooms (Decks 2 and 3) – A, B (x39)
- French Balcony Staterooms (Decks 2 and 3, with floor-to-ceiling door-windows) – C, D (x22)
- RiverView Staterooms – E, F (x25, Deck 1)
Shipboard facilities
Viking Longships feature bright public spaces with innovative elements such as the Aquavit Terrace at the bow, suitable for al fresco dining, and the Observation Lounge with floor-to-ceiling glass doors for panoramic views. Dining options onboard Viking Egil include the Egil Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (al fresco). Additional facilities include an Atrium (lobby), Library (with Internet access), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), and a top deck with a shaded relaxation area, herbal garden, putting green, walking track, deck chess, and shuffleboard. The Egil longship does not have a gym, pool, jacuzzi, or spa. The glass elevator connects only the Middle and Upper decks.
Viking Egil cruise fares include Internet (Wi-Fi), all tours and excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and daily replenished bottled water.
Viking Egil river cruise prices are per person and based on double occupancy. These rates are indicative and may vary depending on travel agency promotions, special offers, discounts, group bookings, or last-minute deals. On select itineraries and dates, Viking may offer discounted round-trip airfare from the USA (available for certain cabins or sailings).

Viking Egil Wiki
Viking Egil is one of the latest-generation Viking Cruises longships, modified for cruising on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger accommodations without reducing the size of public areas or compromising overall comfort. The vessel represents the line’s Longship-class riverboat design. Viking Cruises longships feature energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and interior design by Yran & Storbraaten (Norway). The patented “longship” concept, developed by Rottet Studios (USA), enables significantly larger passenger accommodations with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) off-center.
The riverboat’s godmother is Mrs. Jennifer Gasser (World Travel Holdings, Vice President of Supplier Relations and Product Operations). The ship’s naming ceremony was held in Amsterdam on March 1, 2016. As is traditional for Viking River Cruises, this was a “group christening” for six longships. Egil was christened together with her sister ships Alruna, Kadlin, Rolf, Tialfi, and Vilhjalm.
