Stena Hollandica ferry Wiki
The ferry was specifically designed for the UK-Holland route across the North Sea (Harwich–Hoek van Holland), with regularly scheduled (twice-daily) service in both directions. The ship is powered by four MAN marine diesel engines (two pairs, models 8L48/60CR and 6L48/60CR, with a total power output of 33.6 MW / 2x 9.6 MW + 2x 7.2 MW). The propulsion system consists of two gearboxes, two controllable pitch propellers, two Becker rudders (with twisted leading-edge flaps), and two bow thrusters (used only during docking). Heat generated by the main engines is utilized by the ship’s air-conditioning and heating systems.
The "RoPax 55" series of cruise ferries was ordered in 2006 by STENA LINE, initially from Wadan Yards (Nordic Yards Wismar, currently "Lloyd Werft Wismar"). The total value of the ship order was approximately EUR 400 million. However, STENA temporarily withdrew the order due to the shipbuilder’s financial difficulties, causing construction delays. The order was eventually reinstated, with the original price renegotiated and reduced by approximately 6% (around EUR 24 million). Wadan Yards MTW Wismar (with shipyards in Wismar and Warnemunde) filed for bankruptcy in December 2009 and ceased operations in March 2010.
The sisterships Hollandica and Britannica were delivered in 2010 and christened on June 8 (Hook of Holland) and October 19 (Harwich), respectively. Hollandica was launched in January 2010, with her inaugural crossing (maiden voyage) on May 16, 2010.
Following the ship’s drydock refurbishment in March 2017 (carried out at Damen Shipyard, Rotterdam), she emerged with a new livery (green waves replacing the previous blue design) and a new strapline ("Connecting Europe" instead of "Making good time"). This updated livery was implemented across all STENA LINE ships during the company’s 2016–2017 drydock program.
On July 29, 2022, Semtech (a corporation founded in 1960 specializing in semiconductors and advanced algorithms) announced a partnership with SkyLab BV (a Dutch company providing wireless sensors, GPS tracking, and monitoring systems) and HeNet BV (developers of LongAP technology) to implement a dual-band network on Stena Hollandica. The advanced system is based on Semtech’s LoRa (long-range radio communication) technology, enabling dual-band ship tracking (2.4 GHz and LoRaWAN sub-GHz bands).
