Kapitan Metsayk icebreaker Review
Review of Kapitan Metsayk icebreaker
MS Kapitan Metsayk ("ледокол Капитан Мецайк) is an icebreaking vessel owned and operated by Rosmorport. “Rosmorport” is a Russian FSUE (“Federal State Unitary Enterprise”) created in 2012 by the order of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Transport.
One of the Russian river icebreaker ships, Kapitan Metsayk is of the "Evdokmov"-class ships. The ship was named after the captain and compiler of the Yenisei River sailing Konstantin Metsayk.
In November 2010, the icebreakers Chudinov and Metsayk arrived at the seaport of Astrakhan (on Volga River). Both were planned to be included in the Rosmorport’s local fleet. The company’s deputy General Director Aleshkin and Management LLC director Kapitanov examined the vessels and signed the acceptance certificate of Chudinov.
Heavy ice conditions during 2009-2010 winter navigation revealed the deficit of icebreakers needed to provide efficient ice pilotage from the Russian seaports Olya and Astrakhan to the Caspian Sea and in the reverse direction. This was the reason why Rosmorrechflot at the initiative of Astrakhan Region Authorities decided to enlarge the port’s icebreaking fleet and transfer Metsayk and Chudinov to Astrakhan. Earlier both ships operated in the northeast Caspian Sea.
Currently, the icebreaker is part of the Astrakhan branch of the icebreaker fleet and is fully prepared to carry out important tasks in support convoys in the seaports of Astrakhan and Olya.
Kapitan Metsayk itinerary program offers sailings from home-port Astrakhan (situated on two banks of Volga, close to where the river discharges into the Caspian Sea).
