Margaritaville Islander Review

Review of Margaritaville Islander

The 2000-built cruise ship Margaritaville at Sea Islander (formerly Costa Atlantica, also known as MAS Islander) is the first of two SPIRIT-class Costa vessels, alongside her sistership Costa Mediterranea (launched in 2003). She now sails as a fleetmate of MAS Paradise. In Q1 2020, Costa Atlantica left Costa Cruises to begin operations with the new Chinese company Adora Cruises Ltd, officially starting service on January 13, 2020.

As Costa Atlantica, the vessel (IMO 9187796) was Italy-flagged (MMSI 247645000) and registered in Genoa. MAS Islander is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311001063) and registered in Nassau.

In Q3 2020, Atlantica was joined by Mediterranea. Other ships from the same Spirit class include Carnival Cruise Line’s Legend, Miracle, Pride, and Spirit.

In March-April 2022, both CSSC ships Atlantica and Mediterranea were repositioned via the Suez Canal from Asia to Europe and anchored off Limassol, Cyprus.

History – construction and ownership

On October 16, 2023, Carnival Corporation (as shipowner) officially confirmed the sale of the 23-year-old Costa Atlantica (through Adora Cruises Ltd) to a new buyer, MV Cruises I Vesselco Ltd. The vessel was subsequently chartered to Margaritaville at Sea Cruise Line.

Renamed “Margaritaville at Sea Islander” (MAS Islander) in December 2023, the ship was valued at USD 64.6 million (~EUR 61 million).

Margaritaville at Sea Islander cruise ship (Costa Atlantica)

The 2,700-passenger Costa Atlantica featured a 10-deck-high Atrium with glass elevators accented by vibrant lighting. The energetic atmosphere was softened by Carrara marble, Byzantine mosaics, and Murano glass details inspired by Italy's Roman, Baroque, and Renaissance artistry.

Costa’s last drydock refurbishment of Atlantica was completed in 2019.

MAS Islander refurbishment 2023–2024

Margaritaville Islander’s refurbishment was initially scheduled to begin on November 16, 2023, in Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy), but was postponed to March 12, 2024.

The extensive refit and renovation project involved a full redesign of all passenger staterooms, featuring new styling, colors, and furnishings, along with Margaritaville-branded bedding, linens, and pillows.

Balcony staterooms were reclassified into new categories, including Islander Suites (top-tier), Corner Suites, Grand Terrace Suites, and Breezy Balcony Cabins.

The ship’s Atrium was expanded to 14 decks and now features three multi-deck glass chandeliers, with the lobby level served by the Atrium Bar.

New onboard highlights include a 3-deck poolside venue (LandShark Bar at Sea), a Mini-Golf Course, and family-themed areas such as the Caribbean Amphibian Splash Pool & Slide. Signature Margaritaville venues include JWB Prime Steakhouse, Rita's Taco House, Pizzeria, Coffee Shop, and Cheeseburger Bar.

Entertainment options feature two live production shows and two themed nights per voyage, plus poolside games and live music. The shows are titled “Conky Tonkin’ at Sea” (country-themed) and “Caribbean Heat Remix.” The themed nights include “Boots and Bubbles (Dress to Impress)” (with themed menus and cocktails) and “Rock the Trop” (featuring the Parrot Quest scavenger hunt, character meet-and-greets, and more).

MAS Islander introduced six new dining venues and 11 exclusive bars and lounges to the Margaritaville at Sea brand.

The Defying Gravity Experience caters to families, offering circus-themed workshops and interactive entertainment such as game shows and scavenger hunts. Dedicated youth areas include: Jolly Mon Kids’ Club (ages 3–5), Parakeets Kids’ Club (ages 6–9), The Hang Out Kids’ Club (ages 10–12), and The Far Out Teen Club (ages 13–17).

Decks and Cabins

Costa Atlantica/Margaritaville Islander staterooms (1105 total, in 14 categories) include 52 Suites, 620 Balcony, 179 Oceanview, and 228 Inside cabins. Most staterooms measure 185 ft² (17 m²), with balconies ranging from 35–55 ft² (3–5 m²). About 64% of all accommodations feature private step-out balconies.

There are 8 wheelchair-accessible cabins onboard. The largest accommodations are the Grand Suites, measuring 365 ft² (34 m²) plus a 280 ft² (27 m²) terrace.

The ship has 12 decks, 8 of which are dedicated to cabins. Decks were named after Federico Fellini’s films: Luci Del Varietà (1), La Dolce Vita (2), La Strada (3), Roma (4), I Clowns (5), Amarcord (6), Intervista (7), Eight and a Half (8), Ginger and Fred (9), E La Nave Va (10), La Voce Della Luna (11), and Le Notti di Cabiria (12).

Next are reviewed the MAS Islander ship's facilities, venues, and amenities by deck.

It is complimentary and across multiple levels to host evening productions, musical performances and stage shows that reflect the Margaritaville spirit. It features open seating with varied levels and a multilevel moving stage and is used for original production shows such as Conky Tonkin’ at Sea and Caribbean Heat Remix, which combine live music, singing, dancing and theatrical elements. The theater also serves as a central hub for live entertainment programming throughout the cruise, with scheduled performances that may include music and variety acts..

It offers a bar with beverages including sake, sake-infused drinks, bubble and fruit teas, Asian-inspired cocktails and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, and it may feature a small sushi-style menu. The lounge hosts a variety of daytime and evening activities such as game shows, trivia, arts and crafts sessions, and occasional live music.

Far Out Teen Lounge & Arcade is the designated teen-oriented social space and gaming area where guests aged roughly 13–17 can gather, play, and interact. The lounge is complimentary and functions as a hangout with video games, arcade machines and other entertainment options as part of a casual environment tailored for teens. It is located adjacent to the broader arcade area on the same deck. The space supports activities such as arcade gaming, karaoke and casual socializing under staff supervision, and is part of the family-friendly offerings. Teens can use the lounge and arcade without separate charges for entry, though individual arcade games may require credits or payment.

Love and Luck Casino Bar is a themed bar space associated with the Casino area. It serves hand-crafted cocktails and other alcoholic beverages from its own signature drink menu. Guests can order named drinks such as the Moneyline Margarita, Aces High or Vegas Sour. The bar operates during much of the day and into the late evening.

Margaritaville Casino is the ship’s gambling facility where adults can play traditional casino games. It features an assortment of slot machines and table games such as blackjack, roulette and craps, offering a range of gambling options for both novice and experienced players. Access to the casino is allowed only when the ship is in international waters. The Casino is near other entertainment spaces on Deck 2, including the Flip Flop Atrium and arcade area.

The Lobby Hall houses the Shore Excursions Desk (information, planning and booking shore excursions) and the Guest Services Counter (assistance with general questions about dining, entertainment, shipboard activities, billing and other cruise‑related needs).

Flip Flop Atrium & Bar is a central bar and social lounge located in the large multi‑deck Atrium, serving signature cocktails, tropical drinks and other beverages. It functions as a hub of daytime and evening activity with live music and pop‑up performances by the production cast, and it is positioned as a casual meeting point where passengers can order drinks, socialize, and enjoy entertainment. The venue generally opens in the morning and operates into the late evening.

Hot Hot Hot Night Club (entrance)

Hemisphere Dancer Craft Spirits is one of the signature craft cocktail lounges and bar venues. It specializes in crafted cocktails and spirits served in an intimate lounge atmosphere designed for conversation and relaxation before or after other entertainment. Pearls Private Dining is a specialty dining venue that requires reservations and has an additional charge. It is a quieter, private dining room adjacent to the Fins Main Dining Room and is designed for small groups or special occasions. It offers a more refined culinary experience with gourmet dishes featuring Caribbean-inspired cuisine, premium cuts and fresh seafood paired with fine wines.

Fins Main Dining Room is the ship’s primary complimentary sit-down restaurant/MDR. It serves breakfast and dinner with open seating rather than assigned dining times. The dinner menu changes nightly, with a selection of starters, entrees and desserts featuring island-inspired and classic dishes. The MDR functions as the central restaurant for most passengers, with casual service and no reservations required.

Floor 3

The Hangout Tween Club is a complimentary youth lounge for tweens (10–12) where they can participate in supervised activities suited to that age group. It is a dedicated area with casual seating, video games, group entertainment and themed programming such as high‑energy games and sports like pickleball, basketball, mini‑golf and cornhole tournaments, DJ academy sessions, magic workshops, glow parties and pop‑star jam sessions with musicians. The venue operates throughout scheduled hours, with optional “after‑hours” supervised care available for an extra charge outside regular club hours.

Havana Daydreamin' Sports Bar & Lounge is a Cuban‑style indoor venue with a sports bar theme combining live Latin music, craft beers and an extensive rum selection. It is fitted with multiple large screens for watching live sports, and also features classic pub‑style games and entertainment. The Sports Bar sells alcoholic beverages and pub‑style snacks.

Retail Shops (Live Life Like a Song & Island Time boutiques) form the ship’s main retail shopping area where guests can purchase merchandise and Bahamian island‑inspired goods. These shops carry a range of Margaritaville‑branded apparel, beachwear, accessories, souvenirs and tropical‑themed items, travel essentials such as sunscreen and toiletries, a selection of jewelry, watches and other duty‑free luxury products. The retail shops offer daily specials and seasonal items.

Concierge and Future Cruise area serves two related guest support and sales functions. The Concierge service is available primarily for guests booked in certain higher‑tier staterooms and suites, providing assistance with reservations and planning for onboard services such as excursions, dining and other arrangements. The Future Cruise Desk is a sales desk and appointment space where guests can discuss and book future sailings at potentially promotional rates or with incentives.

Flip Flop Atrium (overlook) is the ship’s central multi‑deck social hub and lounge space that extends up through multiple decks. It features a soaring atrium design with a giant flip‑flop sculpture, floating decorative elements and ocean‑themed decor. The space houses the Flip Flop Atrium Bar, serving tropical cocktails and other drinks. It is also used for live entertainment such as music performances, daily events, informal socializing and people‑watching.

Lovely Cruise Photos (Photo Shop & Studio) is the professional photo studio and retail space where passengers can have vacation photos taken and purchase prints or digital photo packages. The studio offers a range of portrait and candid photo sessions, often with tropical backdrops that reflect the Margaritaville theme, and uses professional equipment for high-quality results. Guests can review and order their cruise photos at the adjacent photo shop, with individual prints and packages available for separate purchase. The venue also provides computers where guests can browse photos by swiping their key card and select images to buy.

Compass Rose Conference Room is one of the professional meeting and event spaces. It is available for an additional cost and serves groups for business meetings, presentations or private gatherings at sea. It provides flexible seating arrangements and modern amenities suitable for various group sizes. The space must be reserved in advance.

Bubbles Up Lounge is the ship’s champagne bar and piano lounge with an emphasis on sparkling wines, champagne and upscale bubbly‑style cocktails. The menu includes spritzers, sparkling wines, champagnes and signature cocktails such as the Sparkling Margarita and the showy Bubbles Up mango‑flavored margarita with a smoke‑filled bubble presentation. The lounge typically features live piano performances.

Islander Main Dining Room (MDR) is a complimentary restaurant that serves as an extension/upper level of the ship’s main complimentary restaurant (Fins Main Dining Room on Deck 2). It offers breakfast, dinner and occasional brunch service with menus that feature island‑inspired and rotating dishes, similar to those served in Fins, and in some cases includes additional seasonal or chef‑crafted specialties not found on the Deck 2 MDR's menu.

Floor 4

QMN & Fins Up Fitness is the gym complex where guests can maintain their workout routines while cruising. The complimentary gym space offers a range of modern exercise equipment, including cardio machines, weight-training gear, and free weights, designed to suit different workout preferences. The facility accommodates solo workouts as well as guided or group activities, and it provides unobstructed ocean views. The gym has Echelon-brand connected equipment and aims to support fitness needs during the voyage.

On Coastal Confessions Deck are also stored the ship's 18 service boats (tenders, lifeboats).

Floor 5

The forward-facing Jolly Mon & Parakeets (Kids Clubs) are complimentary supervised youth programs designed for specific age groups.

The Jolly Mon Club is for children ages 3–5 and features a schedule of ocean-inspired games, arts and crafts, immersive themed experiences, mermaid storytelling, and visits from friendly characters.

The Parakeets Club is for children ages 6–9 and offers a full itinerary that can include magic workshops, an “Escape from Chichen Itza” game, mini-DJ academy sessions, a sports hour on deck, a ship tour, and activities such as a crazy hat party.

Both clubs are part of the ship’s age-group-specific children’s programming, which also includes other clubs for older kids and teens. Parents must check children in and out for the younger groups, and all youth programs operate during scheduled hours as part of the cruise fare.

Floor 9

St. Somewhere Salon & SPA is a full‑service wellness complex (spa and beauty salon) where guests can book paid treatments and wellness services. The Spa & Salon offers a range of services for both men and women, including massages, facials, body wraps, manicures, pedicures and salon services (hair treatments) performed by trained professionals. The spa area includes treatment rooms and a reception/check‑in area.

Pool Deck with Landshark & 5 o'Clock Somewhere pools (served by Landshark & 5 o'Clock bars) features multiple outdoor pool areas designed for different experiences around the main Lido deck. The LandShark Pool (forward) is paired with the multi‑level LandShark Bar, offering an open‑air pool area with hot tubs, in‑pool tables and a large screen for entertainment (sports and music) displayed outdoors. The 5 O’Clock Somewhere Pool area includes a retractable roof so it can be used in varied weather conditions, hot tubs and seating surrounded by loungers and cabanas. It is served by the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar and has a stage for live music and fun performances throughout the day. Both of these main pool spaces have complimentary seating and cabanas available on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

Mexican Cutie Cantina is a complimentary casual poolside dining venue (adjacent to the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Pool) offering quick‑service Mexican‑style food. It serves breakfast burritos with eggs, sausage, chicken and potatoes with toppings in the morning hours and reopens for lunch with options such as customizable street‑style tacos, rice bowls and quesadillas with choices of chicken, pork or beef and a small toppings bar for additional condiments.

Cheeseburger in Paradise is a complimentary casual burger bar serving the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Pool area. It operates as a walk‑up burger bar where guests can build their own burgers with freshly prepared ingredients and a variety of toppings (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and sauces) and served with seasoned fries. Frank and Lola's Pizzeria is a complimentary, casual pizza restaurant near the Lido buffet area. It serves made‑to‑order pizzas, including slices of classic options like cheese, pepperoni or mushroom throughout much of the day and into late-night hours. During some cruises, these pizzas are accessible within the buffet service without additional charge. Wait times can vary because pies are prepared fresh. Guests can also order a whole pizza for an additional cost, including room delivery for a fee; toppings can range from traditional selections to island‑inspired combinations.

Costa Atlantica is one of Costa Cruises’ SPIRIT-class liners (inaugural voyage on July 17, 2000), with sisterships Costa Mediterranea and the Carnival Cruise Line ships Spirit, Pride, Legend, and Miracle.

The vessel was built by STX Finland (formerly Kvaerner Masa-Yards) at the Helsinki New Shipyard (Helsinki), under yard/hull number 498. She has a gross tonnage of 85,861 GT, a deadweight of 8,600 tons, and a maximum draft of 8 m (26 ft). The powerplant consists of six Wartsila marine diesel engines (models 9L46C and 9R46/dual-fuel) with a combined output of 61.95 MW (84,230 HP). The diesel-electric propulsion system drives two AZIPOD units with a total output of 35.2 MW (47,860 HP).

One of the ship’s signature features is the 10-deck atrium with panoramic glass-walled elevators.

Costa Atlantica’s interiors blend Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. All decks were named after Federico Fellini’s films and adorned with Carrara marble, Murano glass tiles, and paintings by Milo Manara. The ship also featured a replica of Venice’s famous “Caffe Florian.”

Costa Atlantica first arrived in Singapore on May 3, 2013, joining Costa Victoria in Asia. Between May and June 2013, she operated 3- and 4-day roundtrips from Singapore to ports in Thailand and Malaysia. In June, the ship was homeported in Keelung, Taiwan, offering two 5-day cruises to Japan and South Korea. From July to December 2013, she was homeported in Shanghai, China, sailing 4- and 5-day roundtrips to Japan and South Korea, visiting ports such as Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Kobe, Cheju, Busan, and Incheon. Costa’s Asia-based ships in 2017 also included Costa Fortuna, Costa neoRomantica, Costa Serena, and Costa Victoria.

Margaritaville Islander cruise ship (Costa Atlantica)

On November 30, 2016, Costa Atlantica embarked on a 46-day World Voyage to the South Pacific, departing roundtrip from Tianjin, China with over 2,000 passengers. The itinerary included ports on two continents and 12 islands across nine countries, with highlights such as Vanuatu, Tonga, French Polynesia, American Samoa, New Caledonia, and Papua New Guinea.

Under the Margaritaville brand, the MAS Islander’s namesake is the Lindblad Expeditions vessel National Geographic Islander II (built in 1991, formerly Crystal Esprit).

In May 2024, it was announced that the MAS Islander’s godmother would be Savannah Jane Buffett (born 1979), an American radio personality and daughter of the late singer-songwriter James William Buffett (1946-2023).

Margaritaville Islander refurbishment 2024 review

On January 10, 2024, Costa Atlantica arrived at Harland & Wolff Shipyard (Belfast, Ireland). Following several wetdocking projects, she entered drydock on March 12.

The scheduled drydocking included an extensive refit and refurbishment to convert the former Costa vessel into the MAS Islander (Margaritaville at Sea Islander).

The project featured a complete renovation and redesign of public areas and staterooms, alongside general maintenance and technical overhauls, machinery updates, classification inspections, and hull cleaning and repainting.

Interestingly, Harland & Wolff began offering cruise ship drydock services in 2020 during the COVID crisis. The shipyard is also renowned as the builder of the RMS Titanic and is regularly contracted for drydock maintenance of Viking Ocean Cruises’ fleet.

MAS Islander was scheduled to enter service with her new owner on June 14, 2024, sailing from Port Tampa Bay, Florida, USA.
