Rusadir ferry Review
Review of Rusadir ferry
The 2019-built/2020-inaugurated MS Rusadir ferry (fka Honfleur) is a Ro-Pax/Ro-Ro passenger vessel owned by the Spanish company BALEARIA. Honfleur was originally intended for charter by the French company BRITTANY FERRIES for the England-France/Cross Channel route Portsmouth-Caen (crossing time ~6 hours).
The ship has a maximum capacity of 1,680 passengers, 550 cars, and 64 lorries (or 130 freight trailers).
For BALEARIA, Rusadir has operated on the Spain-Africa route Malaga-Melilla (crossing time ~6 hours) since March 2022.
The vessel (IMO number 9832119) is currently Cyprus-flagged (MMSI 210329000) and registered in Limassol.
In late July 2020, it was announced that the Kristiansand, Norway-based company Siem Offshore AS had acquired HONFLEUR from the German shipbuilder FSG (Flensburger Schiffbau GmbH und Co. KG). The vessel (FSG hull number 774) was under construction and intended for delivery to BRITTANY FERRIES. However, the order was canceled in June 2020 due to construction delays, after FSG informed the charterer that completion would require approximately one additional year. Insolvency proceedings for FSG began on August 1. It was reported that the vessel’s sale secured the shipyard’s finances for the following six months, although the purchase price was not disclosed.
In late December 2023, it was announced that the vessel had been acquired by BALEARIA from Siem Shipping UK Ltd and is now part of the company’s owned fleet.
Note: In October 2014, SIEM Group acquired FSG (founded in 1872). In February 2019, SIEM sold a 76% stake in FSG to Sapinda Holding BV. In September 2019, SIEM sold its remaining 24% stake to the majority shareholder Tennor Holding BV. FSG encountered serious financial difficulties following delays in the delivery of WB Yeats (IRISH FERRIES), which resulted in additional costs and compensation payments to the shipowner Irish Continental Group. By 2014, FSG had built more than 760 vessels of various types. Construction of Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax ferries began in 2010.

The registered current shipowner is SY NEWSHIP 1 PTE LTD, and the registered managing company is SIEM SHIPPING UK LTD. Both companies are subsidiaries of SIEM Group SCRL (Norway).
MS Honfleur was introduced as BRITTANY FERRIES' first LNG-powered vessel (fueled by liquefied natural gas). She was designed as the largest regularly scheduled cruiseferry in the English Channel and one of the company’s largest newbuilds, alongside the E-FLEXER vessels chartered from STENA RORO.
The ship is equipped with four LNG-powered engines (producing no sulfur emissions), generating lower CO2 emissions and no soot particles compared to conventional diesel-powered ships. Her propulsion system is diesel-electric, featuring modern Azipod units (azimuthing thrusters located below the waterline). This propulsion technology is widely used on large-sized cruise liners, as it reduces noise and vibration while optimizing fuel consumption at lower speeds. Honfleur’s total installed power output is 30 MW.
On December 11, 2017, BRITTANY FERRIES secured shipbuilding financing under the EUR 750 million “Green Shipping Guarantee” program. Established in 2016, the program was supported by the European Investment Bank and Societe Generale. Both banks signed a EUR 150 million guarantee agreement to support the vessel’s construction. Societe Generale acted as the main arranger of the EUR 142.6 million financing package, which included a EUR 49.5 million tranche fully guaranteed by the European Investment Bank.
In January 2018, the UK-based law firm “Watson Farley & Williams” (Paris office, Paris France) advised BRITTANY FERRIES on the EUR 178 million Honfleur financing deal. The transaction (structured as a loan and lease-purchase agreement) was backed by a banking consortium that included Societe Generale (main arranger) and the European Investment Bank.
Construction began in March 2018 with the steel-cutting ceremony at FSG-Flensburger Shipyard (Flensburg Germany). The keel-laying and coin ceremony took place on August 17, 2018, marking the start of the vessel’s physical assembly.
The vessel (FSG hull number 774) was initially scheduled for launch in June 2019 and inauguration in December 2019. She was floated out from drydock at FSG (Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft) on December 14, 2018.
The ship was originally named after the Normandy port town Honfleur, located near the Seine River estuary and opposite Le Havre (the seaport serving Paris City).
On the UK-France Portsmouth-Caen route, Honfleur was planned to operate alongside fleetmate Mont St Michel. The service operates up to three times daily.
BALEARIA has operated the Malaga-Melilla (Spain-Morocco) route with Rusadir since 2020. On this service, the ferry is regularly bunkered with Liquefied Natural Gas in Port Malaga via tanker trucks supplied by ESK Gas Logistics.
