Pets on the ship

Pets (dogs, cats, and ferrets) can be transported on all STENA ships, but specific requirements depend on the itinerary.

  • All ships have designated dog toilets.
  • Dogs must be leashed and muzzled at all times and must not be left unattended.
  • Guide dogs travel free of charge and are allowed on all passenger decks and in their owners' cabins (must wear a harness or jacket).

Pets must also have an approved microchip (or tattoo) and a rabies vaccination administered by an authorized veterinarian. Pets traveling to Norway must be treated for tapeworm. Passengers with pets must arrive at the port at least 1 hour prior to departure.

All animals must comply with the UK Pet Travel Scheme rules and be at least 15 weeks old. EU pet passports and microchips are required. Car passengers may transport up to 5 animals per vehicle. These vehicles receive a colored hanger (placed on the rear-view mirror) until customs clearance in each port. Pets in vehicles must remain inside at all times. The vessel was launched on September 7, 2002, and has one sister ship - Stena Adventurer (currently deployed on the Wales UK–Ireland route Holyhead-Dublin). Both ferries were built by HHI (Hyundai Heavy Industries) at the shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

In September 2018, a pilot study was initiated on Stena Scandinavica to reduce fuel consumption using artificial intelligence (AI) technology provided by Hitachi. The model was developed to help predict the most fuel-efficient vessel operation on a specific route. The AI project was successfully tested on the Goteborg-Kiel route. STENA LINE plans to reduce the fleet's fuel consumption by 2.5% annually. In 2018, STENA's fleet consisted of 38 ships.

In Q4 2019, the software (Stena Fuel Pilot) was installed on five additional Stena RoPax vessels, with fleetwide implementation (on all vessels) scheduled for 2020.

The vessel was UK-flagged (MMSI 235547000), but in 2020 her flag state was changed to Sweden (MMSI 266343000).
