Viking Fjorgyn Review
Review of Viking Fjorgyn
The 2020-built Longship Viking Fjorgyn cruises exclusively on the Seine River in France's Normandy region. The riverboat is year-round homeported in Paris City, departing weekly on 7-night/8-day roundtrip voyages.
This Viking longship is named after Fjorgyn (the Norse goddess of Earth). According to Norse mythology, Fjorgyn is the mother of Thor (the god of thunder and son of Odin).

The Longship Fjorgyn is one of the Viking riverboats specifically designed to navigate the Seine River and dock in downtown Paris. Her sister ships Fjorgyn, Kari, Radgrid, Skaga, Nerthus, and Fjolvar are all smaller (with a passenger capacity of 168, not 190) and feature customized hulls and different engines compared to the standard Viking River Cruises Longship-class vessels.
The vessel (ENI number 7002138) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057743) and registered in Basel.
Cabins
Viking Fjorgyn has a total of 84 staterooms (including 9 Suites, 35 Balcony, 18 French Balcony, and 25 Porthole cabins with non-opening windows) across 8 cabin grades.
The Longship Fjorgyn has two aft-located Explorer Suites with wraparound balconies offering panoramic 270-degree views. The seven Veranda Suites each feature two separate rooms and include a step-out balcony (accessed from the living room) and a French balcony in the bedroom. There are also 35 Veranda Staterooms, each with a private step-out balcony.
Viking Fjorgyn accommodates 168 passengers, all provided with modern hotel-style amenities and high-quality travel and leisure services.
Cabin types/categories (number, location), from highest to lowest:
- Suites - ES (x2, Deck 3), AA (x7, Deck 3)
- Balcony Staterooms - A (x18, Deck 3), B (x17, Deck 2)
- French Balcony Staterooms (with floor-to-ceiling sliding door windows) - C (x3, Deck 3 aft), D (x15, Deck 2)
- RiverView Staterooms - E (x8, Deck 1 forward), F (x14, Deck 1 midship)
Shipboard facilities
All Viking Cruises Longships are equipped with solar panels (mounted aft on the Sun Deck) and hybrid (diesel-electric) powerplants based on energy-efficient marine engines. The Observation Bar Lounge features floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto the Aquavit Terrace—an indoor-outdoor venue located at the bow and designed for relaxation and alfresco dining. The top-deck Sun Deck includes a large shaded seating area (covered by a retractable awning) and offers 360-degree river views.
Onboard dining venues include the Fjorgyn Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (al fresco dining). Other facilities include the Atrium (lobby with a 24-hour Reception Desk), Library (Internet Lounge), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), Sky Bar, and a walking track.
The Fjorgyn Longship does not have a fitness/gym room, swimming pool, Jacuzzi (outdoor whirlpool), spa/beauty salon, or self-service laundry facilities (laundromats).
One elevator (passenger lift) connects only Decks 2 and 3. All decks are also interconnected via stairs—forward (Grand Staircase in the Atrium), midship, and aft.
Unlike standard Viking Longships, Fjorgyn also lacks the aft sundeck putting green (mini-golf course), Herb Garden (organic herb garden), and the deck games area (with shuffleboard).
Viking Seine River Cruise Itinerary
The Longship Fjorgyn operates Viking River Cruises' signature itinerary "Paris and the Heart of Normandy".
The 8-day Seine River cruise is themed around French traditions, cuisine, history, and art.

Below is a review of the Viking Fjorgyn itinerary, including ports of call and shore excursions:
- (Day 1) Le Pecq (docking and embarkation) – this riverfront town is located in the western suburbs of Paris. After boarding and check-in, passengers are free to explore the city or join an organized walking tour.
- (Day 2) Paris City – after breakfast, a guided bus tour includes visits to the Eiffel Tower, Ecole Militaire, Musee d'Orsay, the Latin Quarter (around the Sorbonne), Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, the Opera House, and Champs-Elysees Avenue. In the evening, passengers return to the ship for dinner and begin their Seine River cruise.
- (Day 3, docking in La Roche-Guyon) Giverny and Vernon – Vernon is a picturesque town with cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. Arrival is before breakfast, followed by a guided walking tour including Maison du Temps Jadis (the town’s oldest house) and Notre Dame Church (11th century). After lunch, a bus excursion visits Claude Monet’s home and gardens in Giverny. Dinner is served onboard.
- (Day 4) Arrival in Rouen – an afternoon Old Town walking tour includes Notre Dame Cathedral and the Gros Horloge (16th-century astronomical clock).
- (Day 5) Normandy Beaches (D-Day themed excursion) – a full-day tour visits historic landing sites from June 1944, including Gold Beach, Courseulles-sur-Mer, Juno Beach, Omaha Beach, the American Military Cemetery, and the Arromanches D-Day Museum. Alternatively, a tour to Bayeux is offered, including visits to Juno Beach and the Pegasus Memorial Museum. Return to the ship is in the evening.
- (Day 6) Les Andelys – after lunch onboard, a guided excursion visits Chateau Gaillard, a 12th-century castle built by Richard the Lionheart. This small town along the Seine is best known for the castle overlooking the village.
- (Day 7) Mantes-la-Jolie – a scenic riverside town. After breakfast, a bus excursion visits Chateau de Malmaison (18th-century manor house). An optional tour to Chateau de Versailles is also available.
- (Day 8) Paris City (disembarkation) – after breakfast, passengers check out and disembark. Transfers to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport are available (included only with the Viking Air package). An optional 3-night post-cruise extension in Paris is also offered.
Viking Fjorgyn cruise fares include Wi-Fi internet, all shore excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures and presentations, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and daily replenished bottled water.
Viking Fjorgyn Seine River cruise prices are per person, based on double occupancy. These are indicative rates and may vary depending on travel agency promotions, special offers, group bookings, or last-minute deals.
Ship-to/from-airport transfers and meet-and-greet services are included only when air travel is booked through Viking Cruises (via the Viking Air package).

Viking Fjorgyn Wiki
Viking Fjorgyn is one of the new-generation longships operated by Viking Cruises. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger passenger accommodations without reducing public space or compromising overall onboard comfort. The Viking Fjorgyn represents Viking Cruises' latest design, featuring energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and an interior developed by "Yran & Storbraaten" (Norway). The patented "longship" concept (by "Rottet Studios", USA) enables significantly larger accommodations with full-size, step-out balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor 1 m (3.3 ft) off-center.
The vessel's powerplant consists of two main Caterpillar marine diesel engines (model CAT32-ACERT) with a total output of 2 MW. These are V12 engines (V-configuration with 12 cylinders). The propulsion system is based on two Caterpillar marine propulsion units (model CAT18-ACERT) with a combined output of 1 MW.
Group christening 2022
On March 16, 2022, eight riverboats were officially named during a joint christening ceremony—four in Paris (Fjorgyn, Kari, Radgrid, Skaga) and four in Amsterdam (Hervor, Egdir, Gersemi, Gymir), connected via video link.
- The four Seine River-based vessels (Fjorgyn, Kari, Radgrid, Skaga) are sister ships and shorter in length. As part of the modified Longship design (LOA 125 m / 410 ft), they were specifically built for navigation on the Seine River and homeporting at Pont de Grenelle (Paris), meeting the dock's maximum length requirements.
- The other four vessels (Hervor, Egdir, Gersemi, Gymir) follow the classic Longship design (LOA 135 m / 440 ft).
- The group christening ceremony was attended by Torstein Hagen (Viking’s Chairman) in Amsterdam, onboard Viking Kari.
- Held dockside, each naming ceremony included a speech and blessing by the ship’s godmother, followed by the traditional breaking of a bottle of Gammel Opland Aquavit (a herb-flavored spirit distilled from grain and potatoes, produced by Oplandske Spritfabrik using a recipe dating back to 1872) against the hull.
The ships' godmothers are as follows:
- Viking Gymir - Alma Deutscher (violinist, pianist, composer, conductor; daughter of Janie Deutscher)
- Viking Egdir - Helen Deutscher (violinist, pianist, vocalist; daughter of Janie Deutscher)
- Viking Radgrid - Janie Deutscher (author, educator, musician)
- Viking Hervor - Brenda Hunsberger (AAA Club Alliance's Senior VP of Travel Services)
- Viking Gersemi - Karryn Christopher (Signature Travel Network's Executive VP of Preferred Partnerships & Marketing)
- Viking Fjorgyn - Ghislaine Wood (Deputy Director of the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia)
- Viking Skaga - Muriel Wilson (Virtuoso Ltd's Director of Event Strategy & Sponsorships)
- Viking Kari - Kari Garmann (Norwegian politician; member of Oslo City Council 1979–1987 and deputy representative to Norway's Parliament from Oslo in 1985 and 1989)
