Aurora Botnia ferry Wiki

The vessel's construction began in September 2019 at the RMC (Rauma Marine Constructions) shipyard in Rauma, Finland. The keel-laying ceremony took place on February 13, 2020. The ship was launched (floated out from drydock) on September 11, 2020, and Baltic Sea trials were conducted in June 2021. The cruise ship was officially delivered to NLC Ferry AB Oy (the shipowner) on August 25, 2021. The two-year shipbuilding project cost EUR 120 million (~USD 141M). RMC's Project Manager for "Aurora Botnia" was Johanna Kaijo.

The christening ceremony was held on August 25, 2021, dockside at Port Vaasa. The naming was led by godmother Catarina Fant (Wasaline's Director of Brand & Communications and Kvarken Link's Head of Marketing). The event was attended by Jyrki Heinimaa (RMC's CEO and President) and Peter Ståhlberg (Wasaline's CEO). The Maiden Voyage (from Vaasa to Umea) departed on August 28.

The vessel's design was developed by Deltamarin Ltd (a Turku, Finland-based company specializing in ship design, offshore engineering, and construction support). The ship's name was selected through an online naming contest (~2500 submissions) and officially announced on December 20, 2019, by Bertil Hammarstedt (Kvarken Link's CEO).

While in port, Aurora Botnia operates on battery power (electricity stored onboard) and uses shorepower (electricity supplied from the city’s power grid) while berthed. The vessel is powered by four dual-fuel engines (Wärtsilä 31DF, turbocharged), capable of running on both LNG (liquefied natural gas) and LBG (liquefied biogas—a methane and CO2 mix produced from agricultural waste, manure, plants, food waste, municipal waste, and sewage).

The Wärtsilä Intelligent Combustion Monitoring system is an AI-based technology that allows real-time engine monitoring and management, as well as predictive maintenance (detects potential issues before they occur). The navigation is managed via the Wärtsilä NACOS MULTIPILOT Platinum system.

The ship features an ice-strengthened hull (ice-class "1A Super") enabling year-round operation in the Baltic Sea. It has a maximum draft of 6.1 m (20 ft) and a freight capacity of 1500 lane meters (storage space for wheeled cargo, including trucks and cars). LNG bunkering is done at Port Vaasa and provided by Gasum Oy (a Finnish state-owned energy company). In 2021, Gasum began constructing a new LNG terminal on Vaskiluoto Island to support Wasaline's ferry operations.

The onboard batteries (supplied by Leclanché Marine) have a storage capacity of 2.2 MWh and are used during in-port navigation and maneuvering, when hotel load demands are minimal.

  • The batteries can be recharged via the onboard powerplant or through a shoreside power plug-in system.
  • Danfoss Drives supplied the ship’s propeller control and battery connection systems.

As part of Wasaline's sustainability program, Aurora Botnia is equipped with modern dual-fuel engines that run on renewable fuels.

  • All interior furnishings (in both staterooms and public areas) are made from recycled materials, including tabletops and counters (from recycled plastic), and carpets and curtains (made with fibers from recycled fishing nets).
  • The vessel includes a WHRS (Waste Heat Recovery System), which recycles waste heat from the main engines to generate electricity.
  • Additional green technologies include the Evac OWMS (a vacuum-based food waste management system), Evac Ecotrap (a grease separator), and 2x UBP 80 cardboard baling presses.

The propulsion system consists of 2x ABB azipods (submerged, 360-degree rotating electrical tunnel thrusters). The hybrid propulsion setup also includes gensets (electric generators), drives, energy storage units, switchboards, shoreside power switchgear, and a full energy management and propulsion control suite supplied by WE Airsoft and installed by WE Tech Solutions.

In October 2019, Merima Oy was contracted to construct the ship’s public areas, all cabins, most machinery rooms, and the HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Interior design was developed by Kudos Design. The fire suppression system (HI-FOG, with over 1000 sprinklers) was supplied by Marioff Corporation Oy. AecorLink AB provided onboard satellite internet and communication systems.

The ship's emergency evacuation system includes one evacuation chute and one automatically inflating liferaft, both supplied by Viking Life-Saving Equipment. Unlike traditional designs with multiple lifeboats, Aurora Botnia carries a single lifeboat (max capacity 150 passengers), deployable by just four crew members in approximately 10 minutes.
