Pearl Seaways ferry Wiki

The vessel was launched on October 22, 1988, and delivered on April 18, 1989, with her inaugural cruise on April 24. Over the years, the ship has operated under several names: Athena (1989–1993, operated by Rederi AB Slite–VIKING LINE), Star Aquarius (1993–2001, operated by Star Cruises), Pearl of Scandinavia (2001–2011, operated by DFDS), and Pearl Seaways (since 2011, operated by DFDS).

Rederi AB Slite (founded in 1947 and bankrupt in 1993) ordered two newbuilds from Turku Shipyard. The first vessel (MS Athena) was intended for the Finland–Sweden route Naantali–Kapellskar. As Kapellskar port authorities failed to modernize the harbor to accommodate the large cruise ferry, MS Athena was instead deployed on the Sweden–Aland route StockholmMariehamn (Aland). The ferry’s car deck also housed public venues, including an amusement park and a disco club.

Following the bankruptcy of Rederi AB Slite, in August 1993 VIKING LINE laid up the vessel in Stockholm and offered her for sale. Among the bidders were DFDS, P&O FERRIES, and Star Cruises (a GHK-owned subsidiary). In September 1993, the ship was sold to Star Cruises and renamed “Star Aquarius.” After an extensive drydock refurbishment at Sembawang Shipyard (October–December), the cruise ship was homeported in Singapore. The entire garage deck was converted into a casino.

In 1998, the cruise ship’s homeport was changed to Hong Kong. In 2000, the vessel was put up for sale again. In January 2001, she was sold to DFDS, drydock rebuilt at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg (April–June 2001), renamed “Pearl of Scandinavia,” and began service on the Copenhagen–Helsingborg–Oslo route on June 26. To reduce fuel consumption and harbor pilotage costs, the Helsingborg port call was dropped from the itinerary in October 2006.

In January 2005, the ferry underwent a complete rebuild at Oresund Shipyard in Landskrona, Sweden.

MS Athena had a capacity of 2,200 passengers (2,394 berths) and 450 cars. As Star Aquarius, the cruise ship accommodated 1,378 passengers (1,378 berths) and carried no vehicles.

The ship’s powerplant consists of four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model PIELSTICK 12PC2-6V) with a combined output of 23.8 MW. Propulsion is provided by two shafts with controllable-pitch propellers. The hull is ice-strengthened (Ice Class “1A Super”), allowing operations in icy waters without icebreaking vessel assistance. Her sisterships are Crown Seaways, Tallink Isabelle, Viking Amorella, and Viking Gabriella.
