Celebrity Eclipse Review

Review of Celebrity Eclipse

The 2010-built Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship is the third of the Solstice-class vessels operated by Celebrity Cruises, alongside sister ships Equinox, Silhouette, Solstice, and Reflection. Celebrity Eclipse was scheduled for her "Celebrity Revolution" drydock refurbishment on April 1, 2020.

The vessel (IMO number 9404314) is currently Malta-flagged (MMSI 249666000) and registered in Valletta.

History - Construction and Ownership

Celebrity Cruises was established in 1988 by the Greece-based Chandris Line (which operated cruise ships from 1974 to 1996). In 1997, Royal Caribbean International merged with Celebrity Cruises Ltd to form Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL). The iconic "X" logo on the ship funnels represents the Greek letter chi, standing for Chandris.

Common features across Celebrity Cruises ships include glass-walled aft dining rooms, signature alternative dining venues, stylish lounges and bars, spacious atriums, a high number of balcony cabins, expansive sundecks with pools, The Retreat (an adults-only sundeck with pool, Jacuzzi, cabanas, and bar service), the Rooftop Terrace (an outdoor lounge, restaurant, and cinema), full-service Spa with Thermal Suites, and premium retail shops.

The 2,900-passenger Celebrity Eclipse was the third Solstice-class ship, following Equinox and Solstice. She is among the most eco-friendly cruise ships globally, equipped with a photovoltaic system, optimized hull design, energy-efficient lighting, and specialized hull coatings, all contributing to approximately 30% greater energy efficiency. During her April 2015 drydock, Celebrity Eclipse received several enhancements, including the transformation of Cellar Masters into the Gastrobar (featuring over 40 craft beers and iPad ordering), the addition of Slush frozen drinks bar at the pool area, and the introduction of British-themed slot machines in the casino. A private photo studio was also added.

Most staterooms are 195 ft² (18 m²), and about 85% feature private step-out balconies (typically 55 ft² / 5 m²). There are 30 wheelchair-accessible cabins. The largest accommodations are the Penthouse Suites at 1,290 ft² (120 m²) with a 390 ft² (36 m²) terrace.

The ship has 15 decks, 14 of which are passenger-accessible, with 8 containing cabins.

Itineraries

Celebrity Eclipse sails Southern Caribbean cruises from Miami, Florida, and European itineraries including the Canary Islands and Baltic Sea from Southampton, with transatlantic crossings for repositioning.

Celebrity Eclipse was the first large cruise ship homeported in Dublin, Ireland, starting in May 2018. The inaugural 10-day itinerary visited ports in Ireland and Iceland, followed by 8-day Norwegian Fjords cruises.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eclipse was paused from March 2020 through April 2022. She resumed service on April 26, 2022, with an 11-day Hawaii cruise from Vancouver to Honolulu. Her inaugural Australia and New Zealand season, originally scheduled for early 2021, was postponed to October 2022 through April 2023. During this season, she was homeported in Sydney and Auckland, offering 5- to 13-night itineraries themed “Five Star Getaways,” “Sun and Beach Escapes,” and “Food and Wine Classics.” New ports included Port Arthur, Tasmania, with longer port stays in key destinations.

From December 2023 to April 2024, Celebrity Eclipse is deployed in South America, offering 14-night Antarctica and 12-night Argentina & Patagonia itineraries. Call ports include Valparaiso, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Optional land tours feature Chile’s Osorno Volcano (from Puerto Montt), Argentina’s Playa El Doradillo (from Puerto Madryn), and Peru’s Cusco and Machu Picchu (from Callao) during a 16-night repositioning cruise from Los Angeles to Chile with two overnights in Callao-Lima.

The vessel (Meyer Werft Papenburg yard/hull number 107630) has a volume of 121,878 GT, a DWT of 9,500 tons, and a maximum draught of 8.6 m. Its powerplant consists of Wartsila marine diesel engines (models 16V46 and 14V48/60CR) with a combined output of 67.2 MW. The registered owner is CELEBRITY ECLIPSE INC, and the management company is CELEBRITY CRUISES INC.

Celebrity Eclipse was launched on February 28, 2010. She is part of the Solstice-class series, alongside sister ships Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Reflection, Celebrity Silhouette, and Celebrity Solstice.

As newbuilds, the Solstice-class ships were among the most environmentally friendly cruise vessels of their time. Celebrity Eclipse features an energy-efficient hull coated with light-emitting diodes and an innovative photovoltaic system, enhancing energy savings by approximately 30% compared to similar-class ships. The Solstice class also introduced new cabin categories to the fleet, including Concierge Class and AquaClass. Approximately 85% of all staterooms feature private step-out balconies.

The ship shares her name with two Scenic Yacht Cruises superyachts: Scenic Eclipse (2019) and Scenic Eclipse II (2023).

Celebrity Eclipse was delivered by Meyer Werft Papenburg on April 15, 2010, and christened in Southampton on April 24. The ceremony was led by godmother Emma Pontin (1971-2016), a British Ocean Yachtmaster, instructor, author, and public speaker. The ship’s inaugural season (2010) was based in Europe, sailing Mediterranean, Baltic, Scandinavia, and Russia itineraries. She was later deployed in the Caribbean, homeporting in Port Everglades – Fort Lauderdale, Florida, operating 7- and 8-day roundtrip Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises.
