Carnival Festivale Review
Review of Carnival Festivale
The 2027-built Carnival Festivale cruise ship is among the CCL fleet's newest and largest liners (the fleet’s 27th vessel) and the fourth unit of the XL-Class (aka EXCELLENCE) from the German shipbuilder Meyer Werft (shipyard Papenburg).
Festivale is the second Carnival ship (after Jubilee) constructed in Germany. As with all other "Fun Ships," the shipowner is Carnival Corporation - the world's largest passenger shipping company.
The vessel (IMO number 1060289) will be Bahamas-flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Nassau.
The XL-Class is similar in design and facilities to the Excellence/Helios-Class ships produced for Carnival Corporation's brands Costa and AIDA by Meyer Werft.
Other Excellence-Class liners (Carnival Festivale’s sisterships and CCL fleetmates) include Carnival Mardi Gras (2021), Carnival Celebration (2022), Carnival Jubilee (2023), and Carnival Tropicale (2028).
Carnival’s XL-Class ships feature a new hull design in red, white, and navy blue, created by the NYC-based naval architecture firm "Bluarch Architecture." Among the world's largest passenger ships, Festivale measures 1130 ft (344 m) in length and has a passenger capacity of 5200 (lower berths). She boasts cutting-edge maritime technologies and various fleet-first and industry-first innovations.
Unlike her sisterships, Festivale does not feature the "BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster." Instead, it introduces the Sunsation Point, an outdoor activity complex that includes the Carnival WaterWorks Ultra aquapark.
On January 25, 2019, it was announced that the new Carnival XL-class vessels would feature six themed zones (neighborhoods).
Mardi Gras ship’s neighborhoods include Grand Central, French Quarter, Lido-Pool, La Piazza, Summer Landing, and The Ultimate Playground.
Festivale ship’s neighborhoods include Grand Central, TBN1, Lido-Pool, TBN2, Summer Landing, and The Ultimate Playground.
Decks and Cabins
Carnival Festivale staterooms (a total of 2626 passenger cabins) are divided into 22 different categories, including 2-deck apartments (duplex suites) and 80 wheelchair-accessible cabins for disabled guests. All cabin bathrooms feature CCL fleet’s first glass-door showers and in-shower shaving bars. Over 70% of all staterooms are outside cabins, and 300 pairs are connecting/family cabins.
The ship has 18 decks, of which 15 are accessible to passengers and 11 contain cabins.
Cabin balconies are accessed via floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. Lounge areas feature new-style sofabeds (with footstools that open for storage), under-bed suitcase storage, bedside flexible reading lamps, a mini-refrigerator with a transparent door, multiple power outlets, USB ports (on the vanity table and bedside), additional shelving (for electronic devices), and large wardrobes with folding shelves, a sliding shoe rack, and pull-out bins.
Like Vista-class ships, Festivale offers Havana staterooms with a private patio providing direct access to an exclusive sundeck with loungers, a bar, and a swimming pool. Another Vista-class stateroom type, Family Harbor, is located near Camp Ocean (kids club) and includes direct access to the exclusive Family Harbor Lounge. Cloud 9 Spa staterooms feature exclusive amenities such as premium bathrobes and slippers, and Elemis-brand toiletries.
Festivale offers over 180 suites in 11 categories, including CCL’s premium "Carnival Excel" suites (32 staterooms in four categories) featuring VIP amenities and exclusive access to Loft 19 (a resort-style, open-air sundeck). All suites come with VIP perks such as priority boarding and disembarkation, bottled water upon arrival, priority main dining room seating, and plush bathrobes. "Carnival Excel" suites additionally offer:
- Dedicated concierge phone line
- Unlimited access to Loft 19
- Guaranteed specialty dining times (excluding Bonsai Teppanyaki and Chef's Table)
- Complimentary room service, laundry, and the Bottomless Bubbles soda package
- Fresh fruit basket and sparkling wine upon arrival
- Upgraded bathroom amenities
Shipboard Facilities and Amenities
Like her sisterships, Festivale features the fleet’s largest Atriums and open-deck areas.

Accessible from the Atrium are Bonsai Sushi, Bonsai Teppanyaki, Punchliner Comedy Club, and the intimate Piano Bar 88.
Currents (aft on Decks 6-7) features eateries and bars and is linked via a 2-deck-high Promenade to "The Golden Mermaid" (a bar lounge with handcrafted cocktails and live music).

Lido (aft on Decks 16-17) houses Carnival’s complimentary pool deck eateries: Seafood Shack, BlueIguana Cantina, and Guy’s Burger Joint, along with new venues "Street Eats" (grab-and-go) and "Big Chicken by Shaq" (lunch and dinner takeaway).
The Ultimate Playground (aft on Decks 18-20) is a large family-friendly outdoor area highlighted by the fleet’s largest Carnival WaterWorks Ultra aquapark and an expanded SportSquare. WaterWorks Ultra is part of the Sunsation Point activity complex, which replaces BOLT.
Festivale’s WaterWorks park (Sunsation Point) is open for extended hours, including evenings and nights, making top-deck activities accessible to all guests. Evening entertainment includes special events, DJ-led parties, and other fun activities.
The new Carnival Festivale also features signature facilities such as Serenity (adults-only retreat), an expanded Alchemy Bar, and Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse. Additional innovations will be announced soon.
Debuting on Carnival Jubilee, Festivale also features two new music-themed zones – TBN1 (Decks 6-7) and TBN2 (Deck 8).
The TBN1 Zone (midship-aft on Decks 6-7) transforms throughout the day and cruise. It is equipped with six large LED screens (serving as windows) and a wave-shaped LED ceiling for UHD projections. Located here are Dr. Inks Ph.D. Bar (serving ocean-themed and color-changing drinks) and The Golden Mermaid Lounge (specialty cocktails, live band performances). Also on Deck 6 is "Emeril’s Bistro 724," a specialty restaurant by Emeril Lagasse (CCL's Chief Culinary Officer).
Carnival Festivale’s TBN1 Zone is music-themed (details to be announced).
- "Seaquest: A Fun Sub Adventure" features LED portals, a 100-ft-long ceiling display, interactive lighting, music, and sound effects. The “underwater excursion” visits themed environments such as the Carnival Seacation resort and The Golden Mermaid’s kingdom, showcasing marine life.
- "Change the Currents" transforms the Currents Zone into six underwater worlds with unique colors and sounds. "Create A Fish" allows children to design sea creatures and watch them animate on LED screens.
- Evening displays in the Currents Zone feature rotating themes and destinations.
- "Soundwaves Jukebox" visualizes guest-selected songs with UHD displays and lights.
- "Currents Atlas" is an interactive map showing real-time locations of the CCL fleet (via satellite AIS), along with fun facts about marine life and migratory patterns.
- The TBN2 Zone (midship-aft on deck 8) is also music-themed (outdoor performances) and features a 3-deck-high (decks 6-7-8) art installation. Its boardwalk includes a Ferris wheel-themed ceiling and houses two complimentary 24-hour fast food venues – Coastal Slice (pizza bar) and Beach Buns (mini-sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs) – along with Cucina del Capitano (seafood restaurant) and the Marina Bar (a lounge serving specialty coffees and cocktails, with live music nightly).

The shipbuilding order for Carnival Festivale (Meyer Werft yard number/hull S724) was placed by Carnival Corporation (the shipowner) with the German shipbuilder Meyer Werft (Papenburg Shipyard) on February 13, 2024. This order marked the fourth unit in the EXCEL/Excellence class.
The names of the fourth and fifth XL-Class CCL vessels—Carnival Festivale and Carnival Tropicale—were officially announced on April 7, 2025, by Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line.
For the newbuild (S724), Meyer Werft contracted Silverstream Technologies (London, UK-based company) to provide a hull air lubrication system. The system releases air bubbles via 12 ARUs (Air Release Units) along the flat bottom of the hull, creating a dense carpet of microbubbles. This reduces water resistance, improves fuel efficiency by approximately 5%, and enhances maneuverability.
Like most largenewbuilds, Carnival Festivale is LNG-powered. She is equipped with four Caterpillar Marine LNG engines (model MaK 16M-46DF) delivering a combined output of 57.2 MW. The propulsion system features two Azimuthing thrusters with a combined output of 37 MW. The vessel has three cryogenic steel LNG tanks with a total capacity of ~3,200 m³. Two of the tanks measure 35 m in length and 8 m in diameter, each holding 1,525 m³ of gas. The third tank measures 28 m in length, 5 m in diameter, and holds 520 m³. Bunkering takes approximately 8 hours, and the LNG capacity supports up to 14 days of operation, including navigation and onboard electricity generation.
For LNG bunkering operations at her Florida homeports—PortMiami and Port Canaveral—Carnival partnered with Royal Dutch Shell plc as the fuel supplier.
The vessel’s construction officially began on April 9, 2025, with a steel-cutting ceremony held at the Papenburg shipyard. The event was attended by Christine Duffy (President of Carnival Cruise Line) and Jan Meyer (Managing Director of Meyer Werft GmbH).
Carnival Festivale will be the fleet’s second ship, after Carnival Jubilee, to offer 5G connectivity and mobile phone service. This is made possible through a partnership with WMS/Wireless Maritime Services LLC, a Miramar, Florida-based company (founded in 2005) that specializes in high-speed cellular networks for maritime environments.
Meyer Werft also contracted Almaco Group to handle the planning, design, construction, supply, installation, and commissioning of the vessel’s provisioning stores. Completed in December 2023, the project included fixed furniture, air supply connections, electrical systems, carpeting, ceiling work, and the outfitting of more than 1,000 staterooms. All cabins were prefabricated, delivered, and installed by the subcontractor EMS PreCab GmbH.
