Enchante barge Review

Review of Enchante barge

MS Enchante is a luxurious hotel barge (cruise ship) built in 1958 and completely refurbished in drydock in 2009. She has a sistership, the Finesse (a same-designed hotel barge). Currently, Enchante is owned by European Waterways and operates Canal du Midi cruises (in southwestern France) between Marseillan (Herault department) and Le Somail (Aude department). Since May 2016, Finesse has been sailing on the Saone River and Canal du Centre (in southern Burgundy).

MS Enchante barge cruise ship

Enchante was built in Oostkamp, Belgium, as a cargo barge and was originally used to transport carbon, fertilizers, grain, and other dry bulk cargoes. She was first christened "Maria" and later renamed several times before 2009, when she was registered in France as "Enchante." The vessel is built of steel with high carbon content—a common feature of pre-war barges. While slightly more brittle, this type of steel offers excellent anti-corrosion properties.

Designed with "hotel luxury" in mind, each of Enchante’s four spacious suites features a beautifully appointed bathroom and air-conditioning. Offering some of the fleet’s largest accommodations, each cabin can be arranged with either a double bed or twin beds. The luxury barge also has a spacious sundeck (outdoor top deck) with an alfresco dining area and a relaxing spa pool.

The saloon (lounge) features large panoramic windows and a demonstration galley (kitchen) where guests can watch the chef prepare gourmet meals. The ship’s interior is modern and stylish, with plenty of natural light.

With a crew of five, Enchante is the perfect barge cruise ship for exploring the Canal du Midi in southwestern France. She is ideal for adventurous travelers who wish to experience French canal cruising. European Waterways also offers opportunities for cycling and walking along the itinerary route, or guests can simply relax onboard and enjoy the passing scenery.
