MSC World Atlantic Review
Review of MSC World Atlantic
The 2027-built MSC World Atlantic cruise ship (currently under construction) is the fourth and final unit in the 4-ship MSC WORLD Class series designed and built for MSC Cruises. Her sisterships and fleetmates are World Europa (2022), World America (2025), and World Asia (2026).
The vessel (IMO number 9901568) will be Malta-flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Valletta.
MSC World Atlantic is currently scheduled for delivery and inauguration in February 2027.
History – construction and ownership
MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples. Established in 1960, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), the world’s second-largest containership operator. MSC Crociere is the world’s largest privately owned cruise company.
By annual passenger shipping volumes, MSC is the world’s 3rd largest cruise shipowner, following Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group.
As of 2021, MSC is Europe’s largest passenger shipping company. By 2026, MSC is projected to become the world’s 3rd largest cruise company (surpassing NCLH by berth capacity) with a 29-ship fleet, including 15 newbuilds (2017-2027), supported by an unprecedented USD 13-billion newbuilding program.
MSC Cruises WORLD-Class liners
On April 6, 2017, during the MSC Meraviglia delivery ceremony at the STX France Shipyard (Saint-Nazaire), MSC signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with STX France for a new series of two WORLD-Class vessels, at a total cost of ~EUR 4.5 billion (~USD 4.8B). The ceremony was attended by Emmanuel Macron (France’s President), Bruno Le Maire (Minister of Economy), Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC’s Chairman), and Laurent Castaing (STX France’s CEO).
The order for the lead vessel, MSC World Europa, was officially signed on May 31, 2017.
The two optional ships (Units 3 and 4) were confirmed in January 2020, making MSC the largest customer in the history of Chantiers de l'Atlantique, with a total of 21 vessels built at the yard.
The 3rd and 4th units (World Asia and World Atlantic) were officially ordered on November 13, 2023.
There is also an option for a 5th unit of the same class.

WORLD-Class ships have a maximum passenger capacity of 6774 (5079 lower berths). The construction cost per vessel is EUR 1.125 billion (USD 1.255B). All are built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique (formerly STX France). Each ship has a gross tonnage of 215,863 GT, LOA 333 m (1093 ft), beam at waterline 41 m / 135 ft (max beam 54 m / 177 ft), height 75 m (245 ft), and draft 9.2 m (31 ft).
When MSC first revealed the design in April 2016, the ship was planned at ~205,000 GT, with 2760 staterooms and a maximum capacity of 6850 passengers—making it the world’s largest by capacity. By GT volume, MSC’s WORLD-Class remains among the world’s largest passenger ships.
Early design renderings suggested an OASIS-Class-like concept with a long Promenade (wraparound midship complex) lined with numerous dining and drinking venues—such as Aurea Restaurant, Raj Polo Tea House, Gin Bar, Zest Juice Bar, Elixir Mixology Bar, Fizz Champagne Bar, Malt Lounge & Smoker’s Bar, and Emporium Coffee House—plus Promenade Cabins (interior-facing balcony rooms) and an aft family pool deck.

The Lido Deck is dome-covered by a retractable glass roof with solar panels and features a resort-style main pool, six Jacuzzis (including four cantilevered hot tubs), a kids’ Aquapark with one swimming pool and three waterslides (aft, near the funnels), and an aft adults-only sundeck with two swimming pools. Forward is the MSC Yacht Club, featuring its own exclusive sundeck, swimming pool, and Spa pool.

MSC World Atlantic (2027-built/currently under construction) is the fourth and final WORLD-class vessel of MSC Cruises—the fleet’s largest and most innovative ships ever constructed. Sharing the same design are her three sisterships and fleetmates MSC World Europa (2022), MSC World America (2025), and MSC World Asia (2026).
MSC World Atlantic’s deck plan shows 2614 staterooms for 5240 passengers (maximum capacity 6774), served by 2138 crew. The ship has 20 decks (16 accessible to passengers, 12 with cabins), 13 dining venues and food bars (including three MDRs and six specialty restaurants), 21 lounges and bars, seven swimming pools, 13 Jacuzzis (outdoor whirlpools/hot tubs, including four cantilevered units), and 39 elevators (11 of them Panoramic/glass-walled-and-floored lifts in the Atrium).
This unique ship offers 40,000+ m2 (430,000+ ft2) of public space, 15,000 m2 (161,000 ft2) of outdoor deck space, a 3440 m2 (37,000 ft2) main pool deck area, and 760+ m2 (8200 ft2) of children’s interior facilities designed by LEGO & Chicco (with seven rooms dedicated to different age groups). Additional dedicated areas include the Zen District (adults-only wellness and relaxation complex), Family District (with 10 kids’ facilities, pools, clubs, and playgrounds), Family Sundeck (kids-friendly sunbathing area), an Aquapark (with outdoor playgrounds, splash pools, water cannons, and three waterslides with virtual-reality experiences), and a Teens Sundeck (with a swimming pool and spa pool).
The vessel (STX France, Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard/hull number Z34) has a volume of 215,863 GT, DWT of 18,000 tons, and maximum draught of 9.2 m. The powerplant consists of five Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 14V46DF) with a combined output of 80 MW (107,280 hp). Propulsion is provided by two aft 5-blade propellers and seven azimuth thrusters (four bow, two stern) with a combined output of 44 MW (59,000 hp). The registered shipowner is COMPANIA NAVIERA WORLD 4 SA, and the registered manager is MSC CROCIERE SPA.
The vessel’s construction (hull number X34) officially began with the steel-cutting ceremony on March 27, 2025, at Chantiers de l'Atlantique (STX France) in St Nazaire. During the event, the vessel’s name (“MSC World Atlantic”) was formally announced. That same day, MSC and the shipyard celebrated a triple milestone: the delivery of MSC World America (2025), the keel-laying of MSC World Asia (2026), and the steel-cutting of MSC World Atlantic (2027). Attendees included Pierfrancesco Vago (Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division), Captain Gianluigi Aponte (Founder and Group Chairman of MSC), Laurent Castaing (General Manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique), Marc Ferracci (France’s Minister for Industry and Energy), representatives from MSC’s newbuild team, and shipyard workers.
The vessel’s physical assembly began on November 11, 2025, with the keel-laying ceremony. On the same day, MSC World Asia was launched/floated out from drydock. The event was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Henri Doyer (shipyard Program Director and Senior VP of Projects and Engineering), and the ships’ ceremonial godmothers—Lynn Torrent (World Asia) and Agnes Sahores (World Atlantic).
MSC WORLD ship technology
In mid-January 2020, MSC and Chantiers de l’Atlantique unveiled the PACBOAT R&D project, focused on integrating new SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) technology into LNG-powered cruise ships. PACBOAT enables the generation of electricity using LNG as fuel.
- PACBOAT partners include France’s CEA (Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency), ENTREPOSE Group, BUREAU VERITAS SA, CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE (builder, integrator, project coordinator), and MSC CRUISES (shipowner, part of MSC-Mediterranean Shipping Company SA).
- SOFC technology operates at very high temperatures (~750°C / 1382°F). It is ~60% more efficient than hydrogen-based PEMFC (Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells). LNG-fueled SOFC systems reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ~30% compared to standard Wartsila dual-fuel marine engines.
- In 2022, MSC’s SOFC project expanded with GE (General Electric), LR (Lloyd’s Register), and Ceres. GE developed a collaborative design for a multi-megawatt (up to 10 MW) shipboard SOFC system, powerful enough to replace conventional diesel generators.
Key “MSC World Class” features include the new-generation LNG powerplant, advanced wastewater treatment systems, ultra-modern architecture with a Y-shaped superstructure (enhancing panoramic views and significantly increasing balcony stateroom numbers), and a G-bow hull (vertically positioned at a 90-degree angle) for improved stability, hydrodynamics, and fuel efficiency.
In January 2020, the Finnish company Wartsila was contracted to supply engines, fuel systems, and propulsion systems (thrusters, propellers) for both initial “MSC World Class” ships (2022 and 2024). Each vessel is equipped with five Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines (14-cylinder, capable of running on MDO and fitted with NOx reduction units), two Wartsila LNGPac fuel systems, seven Wartsila steerable thrusters (four bow, two stern), and two Wartsila 5-blade FPPs (fixed pitch propellers). Deliveries were scheduled for mid-2020 (World Europa) and mid-2022 (World America).
This MSC ship class is the first in the cruise industry to introduce LNG-powered SOFC systems capable of producing all electricity and heat needed for onboard services without combustion. The technology further reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately one-third compared to conventional LNG-powered cruise ships.
- SOFC is an electrochemical device that uses solid oxide electrolytes to produce electric power directly from oxidizing a fuel (in this case LNG).
- SOFC systems offer fuel flexibility, low emissions, high efficiency, and long-term operational stability.
- They operate at very high temperatures (500–1000°C) and therefore do not require platinum catalysts and are not vulnerable to CO catalyst poisoning. IT-SOFCs operate at 600–800°C, LT-SOFCs at 350–650°C. SOFC-GT systems combine SOFC with a gas turbine.
- SOFCs are commonly used in stationary generators (up to ~2 MW). Their high operating temperature makes them suitable for marine applications, particularly in heat-recovery systems that boost overall fuel efficiency.
MSC World America features two LNG-based SOFC units (supplied by Bloom Energy), each with a capacity of 75 kW (total output 150 kW). While the ship is in port, the Bloom Energy Server operates at ~60% efficiency with ~30% reduced CO emissions and no methane slip.
MSC WORLD-class ships are equipped with the latest BIO-SEA B02 0300 BWTS (ballast water treatment system) by BIO-UV Group. The system combines mechanical filtration with UV disinfection, uses no chemicals, and meets IMO’s 300 m3/hour flow-rate requirement.
In January 2021, STX France contracted ALMACO to supply and install the laundry and catering equipment for the MSC WORLD Class vessels. The catering area (~5000 m2 / 53,820 ft2) includes 12 galleys/kitchens and 58 pantries. ALMACO also supplied 46 provision stores (total area ~2150 m2 / 23,140 ft2). The ALMACO-installed laundry equipment (by Girbau Group, Barcelona-based, established 1960) is integrated with the ship’s wastewater recycling plant.
MSC's ZOE
On February 1, 2019, MSC officially unveiled the in-cabin digital assistant ZOE. This cruise-industry-first technology was developed by Harman International (USA-based and a fully owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics), known for creating digital audio solutions for Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
- ZOE is a voice-enabled artificial intelligence device with advanced voice-recognition software, available in all passenger staterooms.
- ZOE speaks seven languages, answers cruise-related questions, provides information on shipboard services, activities, and facilities, and handles reservations and bookings.
- The device includes far-field microphones, a high-quality speaker, a quad-core processor, and direct phone connectivity (via Bluetooth). It can also update its database to respond to previously unanswerable questions.
- Passenger data (itineraries, tour details, onboard preferences) is stored in Cloud Storage and reused on subsequent voyages.
The device (approx. 15 cm in size) can be activated at any time. A waiver must be signed to permit personal data storage.
Starting with MSC Bellissima (2019), ZOE is being introduced fleetwide (2019–2024) and is available on all MSC newbuilds.
