Carnival Adventure Review

Review of Carnival Adventure

The 2001-built (as "Golden Princess") cruise ship Carnival Adventure (fka Pacific Adventure) was the second GRAND-class vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet, with sisterships Crown, Diamond, Caribbean, Grand, Emerald, Ruby, Star/Carnival Encounter, and Sapphire.

The vessel (IMO number 9192351) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311001595) and registered in Nassau. Previously, she was UK-flagged (MMSI 235113472) and registered in Southampton.

History - Construction and Ownership

Carnival Cruise Line (CCL) is a US-based shipping company, a trademarked brand, and a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (the shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924–1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian).

CCL operates the Corporation's largest fleet by both number of vessels and gross tonnage (volume/passenger capacity). In 2023, CCL held approximately 9% of the global cruise industry revenue and 19% of passenger share. In 2024, Carnival Corporation controlled around 51% of the US$64+ billion cruise industry.

Carnival Adventure cruise ship (P&O Pacific Adventure/Golden Princess)

In 2020, Golden Princess was transferred to P&O Australia and renamed "Pacific Adventure" following a scheduled drydock refurbishment in 2021. In November 2021, Star Princess joined the fleet as "Pacific Encounter," replacing the smaller Pacific Jewel (scrapped in 2021 as "MS Karnika").

In May 2024, Carnival Corporation announced the termination of P&O Cruises Australia's operations and the brand's discontinuation in 2025. Pacific Explorer is scheduled to be retired in February 2025 (sold or scrapped), while Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure will remain in Australia under the Carnival Cruise Line brand, renamed "Carnival Encounter" and "Carnival Adventure."

In March 2025, both Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter were temporarily taken out of service for unscheduled drydocking. As of April 2025, they are operated by Carnival Cruise Line. The other Carnival Australia ship is the Carnival Splendor, which is homeported year-round in Sydney, NSW.

Decks and Cabins

Pacific Adventure staterooms total 1316, including 736 with balconies (78% of the 950 outside rooms). There are 26 wheelchair-accessible cabins (1 window suite, 12 balcony, 4 outside, 9 inside). The number of standard balcony staterooms is 560, and Suites and Mini-Suites number 260.

The ship has 18 decks, of which 13 are accessible to passengers and 9 include cabins.

Review / Shipboard Facilities and Amenities

The 3100-passenger Pacific Adventure offers a wide range of dining experiences, including specialty venues by Melbourne chef Johnny Di Francesco and Australian chef Luke Mangan. Guests can enjoy thrilling waterslides, a kids’ aquapark, an extreme sports park (P&O Edge), and barefoot bowling on the top deck. Leisure and relaxation amenities include a day spa, cabana-style pool areas, several swimming pools, outdoor Jacuzzis/hot tubs, and live music and entertainment.

As part of P&O Australia's evolving onboard culinary offerings, Pacific Adventure’s 2021 drydock introduced two new casual dining venues: "Luke's Grill" (by Luke Mangan) and "400 Gradi" (a Neapolitan pizzeria by Johnny Di Francesco). Additional options include the line’s signature Waterfront Restaurant (Main Dining Room), Angelo’s (Italian), Dragon Lady (Asian), and The Pantry (a buffet-style international marketplace with 9 food outlets). Guests can also use the “Big Red Phone” to order pizza for poolside delivery.

Deck 4 accommodates all crew cabins, the Tender Embarkation/Disembarkation areas, and the Infirmary/Hospital/Medical Center, staffed by onboard physicians and nurses available 24/7.

Deck 5 houses the Lobby (Lobby Lounge, Carnival Adventures/Shore Excursions and Tours, Cherry on Top), served by Lilly's Bar, Charlie's Bar, and Avalon Cafe. This deck is also home to the lower level of the Marquee Theater and the aft-located Waterfront Restaurant.

The Waterfront is a complimentary dining venue open for breakfast (7:30–9:30 am), lunch (12–1 pm), and dinner (5–9 pm). Lunch offerings include salads, soups, pasta, chicken pho, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, fish, cheesecake, pies, fresh fruit, and cheese plates. The dinner menu features seared ahi tuna, ocean trout, lamb shanks, pork chops, chili chicken wings, vegetable moussaka, curry, ravioli, assorted salads, pavlova, chocolate rolls, trifle, and cheese and fruit plates.

Deck 6 features the Marquee Theatre (a three-deck show lounge hosting large-scale evening productions, daily trivia, bingo, game shows, culinary demos, workshops, seminars, and kids’ talent shows), the Casino (with slot machines and gaming tables, also hosting Texas Hold'em and Pokies tournaments), and The Bonded Store. The Atrium on this deck includes the Reception/Guest Services Desk (open 24 hours) and The Fun Shops (duty-free shopping complex open 8 am–midnight) offering Carnival-branded merchandise.

Also on Deck 6 are the youth lounges: Circle C (for ages 12–14, with movies, games, parties, and activities) and Club O2 (for teens, offering movies, video games, karaoke, parties, and exclusive shore excursions).

Midship on Deck 6 is Angelo's Restaurant, a complimentary dining venue for Italian cuisine, with menu items like slow-cooked pork neck, veal shank ragout, fontina and pumpkin arancini, osso buco, seafood cacciucco, pan-fried gnocchi, and desserts like crispy cannoli. Dinner reservations can be made at the Reception Desk.

Also midship is Luke's Bar & Grill (Luke Mangan Restaurant), a fast-casual dining spot with takeaway options. It serves burgers, hotdogs, chicken wings, kebabs, fries, and prawns. Though food here is not complimentary, prices are reasonable. The venue also functions as a specialty restaurant for lunch and dinner, featuring signature dishes like Kingfish Sashimi, licorice parfait, Barramundi for two, and the Kitchen beef slider. Wine and beer are available.

Aft on Deck 6 is Dragon Lady, an Asian restaurant offering a banquet-style dining experience with shared dishes such as Indian spiced duck samosas, Vietnamese rice paper rolls, Chinese dumplings, Japanese tempura-crusted sushi rolls, barramundi green curry, honey prawns, and chicken satay. Desserts include mango and sticky coconut rice, apple caramel milkshake, and salted dark chocolate cake with sesame ice cream. Dinner reservations are required and can be made at Reception.

Deck 7 includes the Promenade—an outdoor open-air space for walking and relaxation—as well as the uppermost level of the Marquee Theater (level 3 of 3), the Ocean Bar (Atrium venue with lounge seating, dance floor, and a live performance stage, also hosting art auctions), the Casino, Fun Shops, Pixels Photo Gallery, Luke’s Bar & Grill, Adventure Hotel (piano bar and English-style pub), Black Circus Theatre (show lounge with a full-service bar), and Piano Bar 88 (cocktail lounge with themed music nights, live piano performances, singalongs, and trivia).

  • Black Circus Theatre is an entertainment lounge with a stage for performances by guest comedians, singers, illusionists, and cabaret-style acts. It features a full-service bar and a supper club ambiance, though it lacks full-size dining tables. Seating is arranged in rows with ledges for drinks. During the day, the venue hosts kids' TC & Skipper's Island Adventure Show, The Edge's laser tag sessions, and screenings of early evening movies.
  • The Trattoria is an Italian restaurant offering complimentary lunch and a la carte dinner. At lunchtime, it operates as a waiter-served Pasta Bar with made-to-order pasta (Linguini, Penne, Farfalle), sauces (Red Clam, Pomodoro, Bolognese, Alfredo), and a variety of toppings (grilled chicken, sausage, shrimp, vegetables). Additional options include meat lasagna, Caesar salad, and bread. Dinner is by reservation and carries a surcharge ($15 for adults, $5 for kids under 12). The menu includes antipasti, arancini, calamari, meatballs, salads, pasta, grilled salmon, desserts (tiramisu, cannoli, apple tart), specialty coffees, wines, Italian beers, cocktails, and after-dinner liqueurs. The kids’ menu features spaghetti with meatballs, chicken tenders, fish fingers, mac and cheese, and cannoli. Dinner includes entertainment with staff performing Italian songs.

Deck 14 houses the Navigation Bridge/Wheelhouse and the midship pool area with two swimming pools (Main Pool and Family Pool), four Jacuzzis/hot tubs, and a band stage. The Family Pool is served by The Bar, while the Main Pool is served by The Pizzeria (Pizza Bar), Luke’s Burger Bar, the Pool Bar, and the Ice Cream Bar.

Also on Deck 14 are The Pantry and the Oasis Pool Deck.

  • The Pantry is a complimentary buffet-style marketplace with nine fresh food outlets. It is open for breakfast (6:30–11:30 am), lunch (11:30 am–3:30 pm), British Pub Lunch on selected days (11:30 am–1:30 pm), and dinner (5:30–11 pm). Outlets include McGregor’s Garden (salads), Stix (stir fry), Mexicana (tacos and burritos), Curry House, Hook’s (fish and chips), Nic & Toni’s (Italian), Fat Cow (carvery), Kettle & Bun (soups and sandwiches), and Sugar Bar (desserts). There is also a bar, a performance stage, and a dance floor. A kids' dinner is held daily at 4:15 pm for children aged 3–10, with highchairs available.
  • The Oasis Bar is a poolside bar serving the aft-located Oasis Pool (on Deck 12) and the adults-only sunbathing area on Deck 14.

Forward on Deck 15 is the wellness complex (Cloud 9 Spa), which includes treatment rooms, saunas, and relaxation areas. This deck also features the Sky Bar (serving the sundeck), Camp Ocean (kids' club with age-specific activities and entertainment), Seaside Theater (outdoor cinema with LED screen), Dreams Studio (photography studio), Family Pool Area, and the Bondi Conference Room.

Deck 16 forward houses the Byron Beach Club—an adults-only open-air sundeck with one swimming pool, two Jacuzzis, padded loungers, steward service (light meals), and private cabanas with spa services. It also provides direct access to the Cloud 9 Spa Pool on Deck 15. Also on Deck 16 are the Kids’ Restroom, Edge Adventure Park, and the spa hot tubs served by The Sunset Bar.

Deck 17 includes the Magra Dome (a sliding glass roof over the Deck 15 pool area), the Sports Court (multi-sport area for basketball, volleyball, and European football), The Walkway (walking/jogging track with scenic paths), and Altitude Nightclub—a disco lounge with a full-service bar and DJ programming that functions as an observation lounge during the day.

Carnival Adventure cruise ship (P&O Pacific Adventure/Golden Princess)

Deck 18 aft features another Sports Court for basketball, volleyball, and football, as well as a continuation of The Walkway (jogging track) and the Altitude Nightclub. The nightclub is accessible via two elevators or stairs from The Oasis relaxation area on Deck 16.

Itineraries

Carnival Adventure operates year-round from its homeport in Sydney (NSW, Australia).

In October 2018, P&O Australia announced the inaugural season for Pacific Adventure, featuring 2020 voyages of 13 nights or more. The winter 2020 program included 132 departures, with 57 short breaks (2–4 nights) from Auckland (NZ), Brisbane (QLD), Melbourne, and Sydney.

Longer itineraries offered themed onboard activities, including current affairs, arts and crafts, culinary sessions, workshops, guest speaker events, and Masquerade Balls.

Pacific Adventure’s maiden voyage was scheduled for October 12, 2020—an 18-night repositioning cruise from Singapore (drydock location) to Sydney. The itinerary included calls in Malaysia (Penang, Langkawi) and Australia (Cairns, Darwin, Airlie Beach, Brisbane, Sydney), with fares starting from USD 2400 (quad occupancy).

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the ship resumed service from Sydney on October 22, 2022. Post-restart itineraries included roundtrips to Australian destinations (Moreton Island, Great Barrier Reef, Tasmania), themed events (e.g., Melbourne Cup), cruises-to-nowhere, as well as voyages to New Zealand and South Pacific Islands (Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia).

Carnival Adventure Wiki

The Fincantieri Monfalcone-built Golden Princess is a GRAND-class vessel. Its godmother was Merlisa George ("Miss USVI" at the time). The ship’s maiden voyage departed on May 16, 2001, on a UK-to-Mediterranean itinerary from Southampton to Barcelona.

A fun fact: between 1993 and 1997, the name "Golden Princess" was used by MV Boudicca (operated by Fred Olsen).

Carnival Adventure (Monfalcone shipyard, hull number 6050) is powered by Wartsila-Sulzer marine diesel engines (models 8ZAV40S and 8ZAL40) with a combined output of 63.36 MW.

In December 2019, the ship became the fleet's first Australia-based vessel (homeport Melbourne, Victoria) to feature MedallionNet technology. That year, the technology was also introduced to fleetmates Coral (April), Island (May), Crown (June), Emerald (August), and Sky (October).

Pacific Adventure refurbishment 2024 review

Pacific Adventure's drydock in 2024 (February 16–March 2) was completed by Seatrium Marine at its Admiralty Yard in Singapore.

The project introduced several new features and upgrades:

The exclusive Byron Beach Club Cabanas were added, providing premium experiences with shaded areas, dedicated beverage and towel service, complimentary bottled water, a US$100 food credit, and amenities including mini-bar fridge, TV, and fan. Each cabana accommodates up to four guests.

Poolside decks were enhanced with new daybeds, and a new ship-wide sound system was installed.

Upgrades to the Elemis at Sea Spa included new treatment beds and equipment, along with a new barber’s chair in the salon.

Additional enhancements included 15,000 m² (~161,500 ft²) of new carpeting, 3,700 m² (~40,000 ft²) of new turf, 3,000 m² (~33,000 ft²) of repainting, and updates to approximately 2,000 pieces of furniture.

Pacific Adventure refurbishment 2021 review

Before joining the P&O Australia fleet, the ship underwent drydocking at Fincantieri Trieste ATSM Shipyard in Trieste, Italy (August 16–September 4, 2021) for general maintenance, full repainting (hull and superstructure), and various renovations.

The vessel received a new livery featuring the Southern Cross on the bow, new dining options (via partnerships with celebrity chefs Luke Mangan and Johnny Di Francesco), redesigned venues (Adventure Hotel, Blue Room), and four new restaurants: Angelo’s (Italian), Dragon Lady (Asian), The Waterfront, and The Pantry (buffet with fresh food outlets). Staterooms and public areas were also refurbished.

The ship's inaugural departure on this route was scheduled for January 8, 2018, with call ports including Melbourne (Australia), and Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Gisborne, Tauranga, Auckland, and Fiordland National Park (New Zealand).

Golden Princess Asia-Alaska Cruise 2018

In April–May 2018, Princess Cruises operated the "Epic Adventure" itinerary—an extended one-way cruise from Singapore to Alaska. The voyage was offered in two segments: a 29-day sailing to Whittier, Alaska, and a 36-day voyage to Vancouver, Canada.

The following table displays the longer itinerary, including ports of call and scheduled dates/times. Prices started at USD 5700 per person (based on double occupancy in an inside cabin). The shorter Singapore–Whittier segment was priced from USD 2730 per person.

According to the company, the longer-than-usual repositioning cruise was developed in response to growing demand from Asian travelers who preferred to embark closer to home and sail all the way to Alaska, rather than booking only the 7-day "Alaska Grand Adventure" itinerary. The route also appealed to Asian passengers by linking several popular regional ports known for themed attractions and local cuisine.
