MSC Seascape Review

Review of MSC Seascape

The 2022-built MSC Seascape cruise ship is Italy-built (by Fincantieri), MSC’s 21st liner, and the second SEASIDE EVO-Class vessel in the fleet, preceded by the sistership MSC Seashore (2021).

The vessel (IMO number 9843807) is currently Malta-flagged (MMSI 256059000) and registered in Valletta.

History - construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples. Established in 1960, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) — the world’s second-largest container shipping company. MSC is also the world’s largest privately/family-owned cruise company and, by annual passenger volumes, the world’s 4th-largest cruise operator, following Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Group, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

In November 2017, MSC ordered two “Seaside EVO” class ships from Fincantieri (contract value EUR 1.8 billion). The new EVO vessels are larger (16 m longer, 17,330 GT more, with 200 additional cabins / 467 more passengers) compared to the Seaview and Seaside. Deliveries were scheduled for 2021 (Seashore) and 2023 (Seascape). With the Seaside EVO class, MSC reached a total investment of EUR 10.5 billion across 12 newbuilds with deliveries through 2026.

The 4500-passenger “Seaside EVO” ship design is an enlarged version of MSC’s Seaside class. Both classes were developed for year-round warm-climate deployment, which explains signature elements such as extensive outdoor areas, top-deck ropes courses, a five-slide waterpark, three glass-floored catwalks, glass-walled elevators, and a wraparound Promenade Deck lined with shops, bars, and restaurants featuring indoor-outdoor seating. SEASIDE EVO ships also include an enlarged MSC Yacht Club, larger public areas, more whirlpools, additional specialty restaurants with outdoor terraces (Deck 8), and more staterooms overall.

The vessel’s technological features include advanced water and waste treatment plants, next-generation scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning systems), optimized hull shape, anti-fouling hull coatings, advanced heat recovery systems, and LED lighting throughout. She is fully compliant with IMO’s “Safe Return to Port” requirements (ensuring the ship remains safe for evacuation after damage).

Seascape is one of MSC’s “smart ships,” part of the company’s EUR 13.6 billion (10-year / 2017–2027) expansion program involving 17 newbuilds and growing the fleet to 29 vessels.

MSC Seascape is equipped with new technologies to enhance the onboard digital experience. MSC partnered with Samsung to implement NFC (near-field communication) technology, enabling passengers to use smartphones, cruise cards, and bracelets to geolocate themselves and their companions, access staterooms, and make onboard payments. Interactive screens throughout the ship allow real-time booking of excursions, shows, dining, spa, and beauty services. Beacon technology delivers location-based, customized notifications to passengers’ devices as they move around the ship.

Itineraries

MSC Seascape’s itinerary program (inaugural season 2022–2023) is based mainly on 7-day Western and Eastern Caribbean voyages roundtrip from the homeport of Miami (Florida, USA). The 7-day cruises can be combined into 14-day back-to-back (B2B) voyages. Special itineraries range from 6 to 15 days.

The Maiden Voyage is scheduled for November 19, 2022 — a 17-day Transatlantic crossing (RepositionCruises.com) from Italy to the USA (Civitavecchia/Rome to NYC), visiting Spain (Barcelona, Valencia, Cadiz), Madeira (Funchal), and Bermuda (Kings Wharf, overnight).

During the 2022–2023 winter season, sailings from PortMiami include:

In January 2024, MSC announced that starting November 2025, MSC Seascape will begin year-round homeporting in Galveston, Texas (USA), offering 7-night Caribbean roundtrips calling in Mexico (Costa Maya, Cozumel) and Honduras (Roatan Island). MSC’s maiden voyage from Texas is scheduled for November 9th.

MSC Seascape Wiki

During MSC Seaside's delivery ceremony on November 29, 2017, MSC announced an order for two “Seaside EVO” ships from Fincantieri (contract value EUR 1.8 billion). The new vessels are 17,330 GT larger, 16 m (52 ft) longer, and have 467 more passengers (capacity) compared to the Seaside-class sisterships Seaside and Seaview. Deliveries were scheduled for May 2021 (Seashore) and November 2022 (Seascape).

In early August 2018, MSC signed a EUR 1.5 billion (USD 1.74 billion) financing agreement for both Seaside EVO shipbuilding projects. The financing was arranged through a syndicate of three banks (Unicredit, BNP Paribas, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti) and fully backed by the Italian export credit agency SACE SIMEST. With the addition of the two EVO-class ships, MSC reached an unprecedented total investment of EUR 10.5 billion for 12 newbuilds scheduled for delivery by 2027.

The vessel’s keel-laying (coin ceremony) was held on June 24, 2021, at the Fincantieri Monfalcone Shipyard near Trieste, Italy. The ceremony’s godmothers (madrinas) were two employees: Silvia Bozzetto (Category Manager & Retail, MSC) and Jolette Vincenzi (Production Supervisor, Fincantieri). They placed two special-edition coins under the keel block for good fortune. The event was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Executive Chairman) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri CEO).

The vessel (yard/hull number 6307) was launched/floated out from drydock on November 18, 2021. The ceremony was attended by Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri) and Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC). Coincidentally, on the same day the sistership MSC Seashore was officially named. Seashore’s christening was held at MSC Ocean Cay (Bahamas), marking the first-ever official ship naming ceremony conducted on a private island.

A notable fact is that the MSC EVO shipbuilding project (per unit) involves more than 10 million man-hours and approximately 4000 shipyard employees. The ship design includes expanded children’s play areas, the Adventure Trail ropes course, an interactive aqua park with five waterslides, three glass-floored catwalks, a sea-level Promenade Deck lined with shops, bars, and restaurants (with indoor-outdoor seating), and glass-walled oceanview elevators.

Shores Global LLC supplied all the vessel’s outdoor wicker furniture used on cabin balconies and pool decks—over 3000 pieces (deckchairs and sun loungers per ship). The company is a major cruise ship furniture supplier, providing consulting on fabrics and materials as well as overseeing the production process.

The ship was officially delivered to MSC by Fincantieri on November 16, 2022. The delivery ceremony (held at the Monfalcone yard) was attended by Matteo Salvini (since 2022 Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility), Anna Maria Cisint (Mayor of Monfalcone), Massimiliano Fedriga (President of Friuli-Venezia Giulia), Admiral Nicola Carlone (Port Authorities’ Commandant), Zoe Africa Vago (ship’s godmother), Captain Roberto Leotta (ship’s Master), Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC), Gianluigi Aponte (MSC Group Founder and Chairman), General Claudio Graziano (Chairman of Fincantieri’s Board), Pierroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri CEO), Luigi Matarazzo (General Manager, Merchant Ships Division), and Cristiano Bazzara (Director, Monfalcone Shipyard).

MSC Seascape’s christening ceremony took place on December 7, 2022, dockside at Manhattan Cruise Terminal in NYC (New York, USA). In a rare departure from tradition, Seascape’s godmother Sophia Loren (1934-born Italian film actress who has named every new MSC liner since 2003) participated virtually via live video stream, while Alexa Aponte-Vago (daughter of Gianluigi Aponte) cut the ribbon and officially named the ship. More than 3000 guests attended the event.

Seascape is MSC’s first vessel to be named in New York City. Starting in April 2023, the company plans to homeport at least one MSC liner in NYC for year-round roundtrips departing from Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.
