Seabourn Sojourn Review
Review of Seabourn Sojourn
The 2010-built Seabourn Sojourn cruise ship (in 2026 to be named Mitsui Ocean Sakura) is the second of Seabourn's older vessels, with sisterships Seabourn Odyssey/Mitsui Ocean Fuji and Seabourn Quest. Each of these three vessels features one of the largest spas ever created on a luxury cruise ship.
The 450-passenger Seabourn Sojourn and her sisters are among the smallest (volume 32,000 GRT) newbuilds by any of the major cruise lines and feature some of the industry's highest space-per-guest ratios.
The vessel (IMO number 9417098) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311027100) and registered in Nassau.
History - construction and ownership
Seabourn Cruises is a top-luxury (all-inclusive) cruise line founded in 1986 and headquartered in Seattle WA. Since 1998, Seabourn has been fully owned by Carnival Corporation—the world's largest passenger shipping company. Seabourn is a signature travel brand and a major player in the premium cruise market, competing directly with Silversea and RSSC-Regent.

On February 28, 2025, Carnival Corporation (as shipowner and parent company of Seabourn Cruise Line Ltd) sold the 15-year-old Seabourn Sojourn to the Japanese shipping company MOL (Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd). The news was confirmed by Takeshi Hashimoto (MOL's President and CEO).
Until 2023, MOL owned and operated only one cruise ship—Nippon Maru (1990-built).
Along with the sale, Seabourn signed a time-charter agreement with MOL allowing the company to continue operating Sojourn (now under charter) in order to retain its scheduled itineraries through May 2026.
Following a major drydock refurbishment, the ship (to be renamed Mitsui Ocean Sakura) will be managed by MOL's subsidiary and travel brand Mitsui Ocean Cruises (Japan). The company plans to introduce 1-night cruises as well as various themed voyages (music, arts, food, festivals, etc).
Decks and Cabins
Seabourn Sojourn staterooms (225 total) are divided into 15 cabin categories. The largest are the GRWG-Grand Wintergarden Suites (1180 ft2 / 110 m2 including the 220 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace). These are actually 2 connecting cabins (WG-Wintergarden Suite plus V4-Veranda Suite) with connecting balconies.
All staterooms are suite-category accommodations and feature luxury hotel amenities such as separate sitting and sleeping areas, a walk-in closet, electronic safe box, smart HDTV (with free on-demand movies), iPod docks, minibar, and refrigerator.
Most staterooms are Veranda Suites (sized 300 ft2 / 28 m2 plus 65 ft2 / 6 m2 balconies). Penthouse Suites are spacious (435 ft2 / 40 m2 with a 100 ft2 / 9 m2 terrace) and feature bedrooms separated from lounge areas (with dining tables and comfortable armchairs) and powder rooms. Grand Suites are two-bedroom accommodations with a glass-walled solarium (whirlpool bathtub and lounge bed).
The vessel has 11 decks, of which 10 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.
Through the company's loyalty program "Seabourn Club", Silver Level and above passengers receive free Internet (limited and unlimited packages), free phone calls (20–30–40 minutes worldwide), a complimentary spa massage, a Day Pass for the Spa Serene Area, free laundry (1 bag for every 7 days on the ship), discounted pricing on onboard alcohol purchases (premium wines and spirits), future cruise booking discounts, luggage shipping service discounts, and access to special offers and exclusive onboard events.
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
Seabourn Sojourn delights her guests with varied menus in the four onboard restaurants and also provides in-suite dining. The Restaurant features eclectic menus created specifically for Seabourn by Chef Charlie Palmer. Each restaurant offers a different dining experience, from casual meals on deck to avant-garde tasting menus. Guests can enjoy traditional Italian lattes and espressos in Seabourn Square or visit one of the six lounges and bars to enjoy world-class champagne, wines, and top-shelf spirits.
The ultra-luxury Seabourn Sojourn yacht offers gourmet cuisine at The Restaurant by celebrity chef Charlie Palmer, while casual meals are available at the Patio Grill poolside. Complimentary French champagne, wines, and spirits are served with lunch and dinner regardless of where guests dine. With approximately one staff member per guest, Seabourn provides an unmatched cruising experience and exceptional service. Evening attire is usually “jacket required,” though on special nights candlelit dining is hosted and black tie attire is optional.
Restaurant 2 is an avant-garde venue featuring exceptional service and creative cuisine. Dishes are individually prepared by the chef for guests to enjoy innovative culinary creations. The Colonnade is an indoor/outdoor restaurant where chefs prepare meals in an open kitchen, allowing guests to watch the cooking process. A different theme is offered each evening. Casual dining is also available poolside at the Patio Grill, where guests can enjoy relaxed meals by Sojourn’s pool. In-Suite Service—fresh crudités or late-night pizza in your suite—is available around the clock. Guests can also choose to have dinner served course-by-course in their suite, complete with personal service and fine linens.
Below is the complete list of Seabourn Sojourn restaurants and food bars.
- The Restaurant (main dining room with open-seating breakfast, lunch, and dinner; the dining amenities are top-luxury; the Restaurant’s dress code is “elegant casual” with optional “formal” dress on special nights).
- Restaurant 2 (reservation-only; offers an avant-garde dining experience featuring a rich selection of fine wines and regionally themed menus).
- Patio Grill (serves the pool area with grilled specialties, salads, and several side dishes; fresh pizza by the slice is offered throughout the afternoon).
- The Colonnade (open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; chefs cook in an open kitchen and guests can watch the food being prepared; the dinner menu features a different theme each evening; the restaurant has an aft terrace and outdoor seating area).
- The Grill by Thomas Keller (menu and ambiance inspired by the classic American chophouse; a collaboration between designer Adam D. Tihany and 3-star Michelin chef Thomas Keller).
Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport
The Grand Salon is Sojourn’s main showroom and can accommodate all passengers, although this rarely occurs because of the variety of entertainment options available onboard. During the day, the venue hosts cooking demonstrations, movies, lectures, and other gatherings. In the evening, live music for dancing is followed by comedy acts, vocal production shows, classical recitals, cabaret performances, and additional dancing. Seabourn Square serves as an innovative “living room,” replacing the traditional reception lobby and providing a welcoming lounge with comfortable sofas, cocktail tables, and armchairs.

The Club is a lively lounge offering daily afternoon tea service. It is popular for dancing to live music and enjoying pre-dinner drinks, while later in the evening the DJ plays dance music. Another terrace features two whirlpool spas and a plunge pool. The Spa is the largest spa on any luxury ship, featuring six treatment rooms, a thermal area with a large hydro-pool, sauna, dry float, and steam rooms, a well-equipped gym, a motion studio with Thai massage area and Kinesis Wall, and a full-service salon.
Additional amenities include complimentary 24-hour room service, Internet/Wi-Fi access, laundry services, and self-serve laundromats. Tipping/gratuities are not expected or included in the cruise price. Wedding parties aboard Seabourn Sojourn can be held in any of the public spaces (there is no onboard chapel).
Below is the complete list of Seabourn Sojourn lounges, clubs, and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

Itineraries
Seabourn Sojourn’s itinerary program includes luxury cruises in Asia with departures from Singapore and Hong Kong. In Europe, Sojourn operates Mediterranean itineraries with departures from Piraeus-Athens, Monaco, and Civitavecchia-Rome, with Suez Canal repositioning transits between Europe and Asia.
In 2017, the ship offered a unique Alaska cruise itinerary program with departures from Vancouver BC Canada and Seward/Anchorage Alaska.
Sojourn is also Seabourn's "world cruiser" as each year the vessel operates 100+ day global voyages combining some of the most popular port cities and scenic travel destinations around the world into a single itinerary. Read more on the ship's Wiki page (scroll down slightly).
Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Seabourn Sojourn was paused for more than two years, with operations rescheduled to restart in the Europe-Mediterranean region on June 6, 2022. The cancellations affected the ship's "World Cruise 2021" (141-day itinerary from Miami to Barcelona), the entire Europe 2021 program (Baltic-Mediterranean), and "World Cruise 2022" (145-day itinerary from Los Angeles).

The vessel (Mariotti yard/hull number 63) has a volume of 32,447 GT-tons, DWT (deadweight tonnage) of 3,780 tons, and a maximum draught of 6.8 m. The powerplant is based on Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 12V32) with a combined output of 23 MW. The registered shipowner and manager is SEABOURN CRUISE LINE LTD, while the ISM Manager is HOLLAND AMERICA LINE NV.
Seabourn Sojourn's sisterships are Odyssey/now Mitsui Ocean Fuji and Quest. The three vessels were produced under the same cruise ship design. When Seabourn launched them, the company promoted the design as a "game-changer for the luxury segment" of the cruise market. Traditionally for all ships in the Seabourn fleet, all passenger cabins (all suites) feature private verandas.
Sojourn joined Seabourn's fleet on May 28, 2010. The christening ceremony was held on June 4 in Greenwich-London, England UK. It was widely noted that the weather was unusually warm and sunny—far from typical for London. Interestingly, during the christening of the Odyssey ship, the weather in "sunny" Venice Italy was extremely rainy. The ship's godmother is Lesley Lawson "Twiggy" (born 1949, English fashion model, actress, and singer).
The maiden voyage began on June 6, 2010. The 14-day Northern European itinerary visited ports in the Baltic Sea (Scotland, Denmark, Norway, Holland) and Iceland. That year raised concerns for Iceland cruise travelers due to volcano-related issues in the country. A volcanologist was invited onboard to share expert knowledge with the Inaugural Cruise passengers. The remaining summer season featured 12–14-day roundtrips from London to Baltic destinations (Scandinavia and Russia), followed by a short Mediterranean deployment and a Transatlantic crossing to North America.
Seabourn Sojourn is among the top-luxury World Cruise ships offering an Around the World itinerary. These voyages include numerous exotic ports of call in Asia, Australia, South America, the USA, the Caribbean, and Africa, as well as Transatlantic crossings and transits through the Panama Canal and/or Suez Canal. Sojourn's first World Voyage (a 111-day itinerary from Los Angeles to Southampton) began in January 2011.
Seabourn Sojourn refurbishments review
Drydock 2018
The ship's last drydock refurbishment was in December 2017–January 2018, conducted at Freeport's Grand Bahama Shipyard. The 6-day-long project was designed and completed by Trimline. The company employed 150 workers to conduct the work. Trimline specializes in interior refurbishment works, and its services have been regularly used by Seabourn since 2015.
The ship's 2018 refurbishment included general maintenance work as well as cabin upgrades. The list of updated and renovated onboard venues included the Colonnade Restaurant (Deck 8), Observation Lounge Bar (Deck 10), The Club disco (Deck 5), and the Grand Salon Theater (Deck 6).
Drydock 2015
During the 2015 drydock refurbishment, Deck 10's aft "Spa Terrace" area was remodeled into 4 new Penthouse Spa Suites (new cabin category PS). Spa Suite passengers now have unlimited access to the Spa Terrace relaxation area. They are also served by a dedicated spa concierge throughout the cruise and enjoy top luxury spa amenities, including a large marble bathroom.
World Cruise 2026 (Seabourn Sojourn)
In November 2023, Seabourn announced Sojourn's World Cruise 2026 titled "Ring of Fire: Hidden Gems".
The 129-day itinerary departs from Los Angeles on January 6, 2026, and visits 63 ports/destinations in 14 different countries, spanning approximately 28,000 nautical miles (~51,860 km / 32,220 mi).
Signature regions of the route include the South Pacific (Australia circumnavigation), Japan's islands, and a North Pacific crossing to Alaska (Glacier Bay NP).
During the Pacific Ocean crossing from the USA to Australia (Los Angeles to Sydney NSW), the ship stops in Hawaii (Honolulu), French Polynesia (Bora Bora, Tahiti), and Auckland NZ (overnight). While circumnavigating Australia, Sojourn stops at 14 ports, including Sydney and Melbourne, where overnight stays are scheduled.
In Asia, the itinerary includes visits to Hong Kong China and Hualien Taiwan, as well as maiden calls to Japan's ports Akita and Miyako, while the call in Tokyo is scheduled overnight.

Around Africa Voyage 2024 (Seabourn Sojourn)
In April 2023 Seabourn opened for booking Sojourn's "Grand Africa Voyage" starting on November 30, 2024.
The originally planned 90-day itinerary (roundtrip from Barcelona) fully circumnavigated Africa transiting the Suez Canal. However, in 2024, due to the Red Sea crisis (Houthis' missile attacks on ships), Seabourn modified the itinerary to avoid Red Sea. Among the canceled visits were ports in Tunisia (La Goulette-Tunis, Sousse), Malta (Valletta), Israel (Haifa, Ashdod), Egypt (Alexandria, Suez Port, Sharm El Sheikh, Safaga), Oman (Salalah).
The next table shows the changed in April 2024 itinerary.

In 2017, Seabourn offered a series of 11-, 12- and 14-day long Alaskan voyages. The unique itineraries combined the region's most popular ports, some of which are rarely visited by cruise vessels. All deals were inclusive of professionally guided tours (sea kayaking and Zodiac landings) led by world-class expedition teams.
