Stena Edda ferry Wiki
"Stena E-Flexer" is a new RO-PAX vessel class introduced by STENA LINE (a total of 12 units) and chartered to Brittany Ferries, DFDS Seaways, and Stena RoRo (a subsidiary of Stena Group / shipowner).
The vessel was initially UK-flagged (MMSI 232020752), but in 2020 the flag state was changed to Cyprus (MMSI 209885000). Stena Edda (hull/yard number WO264) had her construction start on June 15, 2018 (keel-laying ceremony). The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on April 15, 2019, and delivered to STENA on January 15, 2020. Stena Edda's launch was specifically scheduled to start at 13:18 hrs (Weihai China time) and end at 18:00 hrs (6 pm), as the number 18 in China is considered a symbol of good fortune.
After a nearly 2-year design period, in April 2016 STENA ordered the first four E-Flexer liners from the Chinese shipbuilder AVIC Weihai, with options for four more vessels of the same class. Initially, the four ferries were planned for operations in the Irish Sea (homeport Belfast), but in 2018 STENA agreed to charter the 3rd E-Flexer to Brittany Ferries.
Construction of the first E-Flexer ship (Estrid) started in February 2018. Construction of the second E-Flexer ship (Edda) started in June 2018. In July, STENA ordered two more sisterships, bringing the total to all eight vessels under the original shipbuilding order. Later, Stena RoRo announced additional options for four more E-Flexer units, increasing the total to 12.
The 5th E-Flexer was ordered in April 2018 and was to be chartered to DFDS Seaways for 10 years. In May 2018, the 6th ship (Galicia) was ordered, due to begin a 10-year charter to Brittany Ferries starting in late 2021. All E-Flexer ferries feature LNG-powered propulsion (running on LNG / liquefied natural gas). The 6th (DFDS-chartered) ship serves the England UK-(France)-Spain route Portsmouth-(Le Havre)-Bilbao-Santander.
The 1st E-Flexer (Estrid) operates the Ireland-Wales route Dublin-Holyhead for STENA LINE. The 2nd E-Flexer (Edda) and the 4th (Embla) operate for STENA LINE on the Northern Ireland-England route (Belfast-Liverpool/Birkenhead). Brittany Ferries operates the 3rd and 6th E-Flexer ships on the England-Spain route (Portsmouth-Bilbao-Santander). The 5th E-Flexer operates on English Channel crossings between the UK and France (Dover-Calais) under a 10-year bareboat charter to DFDS.
Stena E-FLEXER ship technology
E-FLEXER-class ferries were designed by Deltamarin (a subsidiary of AVIC International), a company specializing in ship design and offshore engineering and construction.
The first six E-FLEXERs have an LOA length of 215 m (704 ft), width of 28 m (91 ft), max draft of 6.4 m (21 ft), and cargo deck capacity of 3100 lane meters (plus additional space for 120 cars).
The 7th and 8th E-FLEXERs are larger at 45000 GT-tons, with LOA length of 240 m (790 ft), freight capacity of 3600 lane meters, 263 cabins, and passenger capacity of 1200. Interior layouts are customized according to the chartering company's requirements. For their interiors, the companies Figura Arkitekter AB (Sweden) and Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH (Germany) were contracted.
Listed next are all China-built STENA E-FLEXER ships constructed by CMI Jinling (Weihai).

The first five E-FLEXERs are powered by two MaK marine diesel engines (model M43C) with a total power output of 25.2 MW (33,800 hp). The propulsion system is by Caterpillar. The engines are "LNG-ready" (designed to be compatible with LNG fuel after modifications). Four E-FLEXERs (ships 6, 10, 11, and 12) are LNG-fueled by original design.
Stena E-FLEXERs are among the world's most energy-efficient passenger ships ever constructed.
