MS Douro Queen Review

Review of MS Douro Queen

The 2005-built MS Douro Queen cruise ship has a sistership, the Douro Cruiser (same design), and a maximum passenger capacity of 126 (plus 30 crew/staff). Douro River itineraries depart roundtrip from homeport Oporto and visit river ports in Portugal and Spain (Vega de Terron-Salamanca).

The riverboat is owned by Mystic Cruises and operated through its Portuguese subsidiary, Douro Azul.

The ship is frequently chartered by the UK company Saga Cruises, as well as by Mystic’s German subsidiary and brand Nicko Cruises.

The vessel is Portugal-flagged (MMSI number 263751340) and registered in Lisbon. She was built by WestSEA Shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

Main onboard facilities include the Panorama Restaurant (serving international and traditional Portuguese cuisine), Panorama Bar Lounge, a lift connecting the Lower and Upper decks, and a stairlift between the Upper and Sun decks.

The primary onboard language is German. There is no special program for English-speaking travelers.

MS Douro Queen staterooms (65 in total) include Upper Deck cabins (with step-out balconies) and Main Deck cabins (with large picture windows).

All cabins are outside and equal in size (15 m² / 160 ft²), offering modern hotel-style amenities such as individual thermostat-controlled air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms (shower, WC, single-sink vanity), electronic safe (in the closet), intercom phone, mirrored dressing table with chair, smart HDTV (satellite channels), hairdryer, and two single beds convertible to a double.

The Panorama Restaurant accommodates all guests in a single sitting. On embarkation day, passengers may reserve a table for the entire cruise. The restaurant offers buffet-style breakfasts and lunches, and four-course dinners (served by waiters). The Panorama Lounge hosts the cruise line’s onboard entertainment program, featuring quizzes, bingo, lectures, live music, themed dance nights, and various games. Local Portuguese performers also join the ship during the voyage for live singing and dancing shows.

The Sun Deck features a sunbathing area with a swimming pool and two Jacuzzis, padded premium loungers with side tables, a shaded seating area with deckchairs and four-seat tables under retractable awnings, and the forward-located Navigation Bridge (called the Wheelhouse on riverboats). All sundeck structures are collapsible and lowered when passing under low bridges.
