MSC World Asia Review
Review of MSC World Asia
The 2026-built MSC World Asia cruise ship (currently under construction) is the third in a 4-unit “MSC WORLD Class” series of passenger liners designed and built for MSC Cruises. The series’ first vessel, World Europa, was launched in December 2021 and inaugurated in December 2022. The sisterships include World America (April 2025) and World Atlantic (February 2027).
The vessel (IMO number 9901556) will be Malta-flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Valletta.
History – construction and ownership
MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples, established in 1960. Today, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company)—the world’s 2nd-largest containership operator. MSC Crociere is also the world’s largest privately owned cruise company.
By annual passenger volumes, MSC ranks as the world’s 3rd-largest cruise shipowner, following Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group.
As of 2021, MSC is Europe’s largest passenger shipping company. By 2026, MSC is projected to become the world’s 3rd-largest cruise company (potentially surpassing NCLH by berth capacity), with a 29-ship fleet including 15 newbuilds (2017–2027) under an unprecedented USD 13-billion shipbuilding program.
MSC Cruises WORLD-Class liners
On April 6, 2017, during MSC Meraviglia’s delivery ceremony at the STX France Shipyard (Saint-Nazaire), MSC signed an MoU for two new WORLD-Class vessels at a total cost of ~EUR 4.5 billion (~USD 4.8B). Attendees included Emmanuel Macron (President of France), Bruno Le Maire (Minister of Economy), Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC’s Chairman), and Laurent Castaing (STX France’s CEO).
The order for the first WORLD-Class ship (World Europa) was officially signed on May 31, 2017.
The orders for the two optional ships (3rd and 4th units) were confirmed in January 2020, making MSC the largest customer in the history of Chantiers de l’Atlantique (21 ships built).
The 3rd and 4th units (World Asia and World Atlantic) were officially ordered on November 13, 2023, with an option for a 5th unit.

MSC WORLD-Class ships have a maximum passenger capacity of 6782 (5079 lower berths). The building cost per vessel is EUR 1.125 billion (USD 1.255B). Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique (formerly STX France), each ship has a volume of 215,863 GT, LOA 333 m (1093 ft), beam 41 m/135 ft (max 54 m/177 ft), height 75 m (245 ft), and draft 9.2 m (31 ft).
When first announced in April 2016, the ship design was projected at 205,000 GT, 2760 staterooms, and 6850 passengers (then the world’s largest by capacity). By gross tonnage, the WORLD-Class remains among the world’s largest cruise ships.

The ship’s design concepts (renderings and videos) reveal an interior reminiscent of RCI’s Oasis-Class, with a ship-long indoor/outdoor Promenade (lined with dining/drink venues), Promenade-view cabins (interior-facing balconies), and an aft family pool deck.

The Lido Deck is dome-covered by a retractable glass roof with solar panels and features a large resort-style pool, six Jacuzzis (including four cantilevered), a kids’ Aquapark with a pool and three waterslides (adjacent to the funnels), and an aft adults-only Sundeck (two pools). Forward is the enhanced MSC Yacht Club with a dedicated sundeck, swimming pool, Spa pool, bar, and lounge.

The vessel (STX France, Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard/hull number Y34) has a volume of 215,863 GT, a deadweight of 18,000 tons, and a maximum draught of 9.2 m. The powerplant is based on five Wartsila 14V46DF dual-fuel marine diesel engines with a combined output of 80 MW (107,280 hp). Propulsion is provided by two aft 5-blade fixed-pitch propellers and seven azimuth thrusters (four bow, two stern) with a combined output of 44 MW (59,000 hp). The registered shipowner is COMPANIA NAVIERA WORLD 2 SA, and the registered manager is MSC CROCIERE SPA.
The vessel’s construction (hull/yard number Y34) officially started with the steel-cutting ceremony held on April 9, 2024, at Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard/STX France in St Nazaire. During the ceremony, Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman) officially announced the newbuild’s name (“MSC World Asia”). The event was attended by Gianni Onorato (MSC Cruises’ CEO) and Laurent Castaing (the shipyard’s General Manager).
The vessel’s physical construction/assembly began with the keel-laying/coin ceremony held on March 27, 2025, at Chantiers de l'Atlantique. On the same day, the shipowner and shipbuilder celebrated a triple milestone: the delivery of MSC World America (2025), the keel-laying of MSC World Asia (2026), and the steel-cutting of MSC World Atlantic (2027). The ceremonies were attended by Pierfrancesco Vago (Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division), Captain Gianluigi Aponte (Founder and Group Chairman of MSC), Laurent Castaing (General Manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique), Marc Ferracci (France’s Minister for Industry and Energy), representatives of MSC’s newbuild team, and shipyard workers.
MSC World Asia was launched/floated out from drydock on November 11, 2025. On the same day, the keel-laying/coin ceremony for MSC World Atlantic was held. The events were attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Henri Doyer (shipyard’s Program Director and Senior VP of Projects and Engineering), and the ceremonial godmothers Lynn Torrent (World Asia) and Agnes Sahores (World Atlantic).
MSC WORLD ships ASIA and ATLANTIC were officially ordered on November 13, 2023. The documents (signed by Pierfrancesco Vago and Laurent Castaing) also included an option for a fifth unit of the class.
MSC WORLD ship technology
In mid-January 2020, MSC and the French shipbuilder unveiled the revolutionary R&D project PACBOAT, focused on integrating new fuel cell technology (SOFC) on LNG-powered cruise ships. PACBOAT enables electricity generation using LNG as fuel.
- PACBOAT project partners include France’s CEA (Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency), ENTREPOSE Group (design and manufacturing), BUREAU VERITAS SA (marine safety certification), CHANTIERS DE L’ATLANTIQUE (shipbuilder, integrator, project coordinator), and MSC CRUISES (shipowner, subsidiary of MSC-Mediterranean Shipping Company SA).
- SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) operates at very high temperatures (~750°C / 1382°F). The SOFC technology is approximately 60% more efficient than PEMFC (Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell), a low-temperature system used mainly for transportation, stationary, and portable applications. LNG-fueled SOFC reduces greenhouse gas emissions by ~30% compared to standard Wartsila LNG-diesel dual-fuel engines.
- In 2022, MSC’s SOFC project expanded with GE (General Electric Company), LR (Lloyd’s Register), and Ceres. GE developed a collaborative design for a multi-megawatt (max 10 MW) SOFC shipboard system capable of replacing conventional diesel generators.
Key “MSC World Class” features include the new-generation LNG powerplant, advanced wastewater treatment plants, and ultra-modern marine architecture with a Y-shaped superstructure (enhancing panoramic views and increasing the number of balcony staterooms). The G-bow hull (vertical/90-degree bow design) improves stability, hydrodynamics, and fuel efficiency.
In January 2020, the Finnish company Wartsila was contracted to supply the engines, fuel systems, and propulsion systems (thrusters, propellers) for the “MSC World” ships (2022 and 2024). Each ship has five Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines (14-cylinder, MDO-capable, each fitted with NOx-reduction units), two Wartsila LNGPac systems (gas supply/storage), seven Wartsila thrusters (4 bow, 2 stern), and two Wartsila 5-blade fixed-pitch propellers. Machinery deliveries were scheduled for mid-2020 (World Europa) and mid-2022 (World America).
This MSC ship class is also the industry’s first to introduce LNG-powered SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) technology capable of producing all electricity and heat required for onboard services without combustion. The system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by roughly one-third compared to conventional LNG-powered cruise ships.
- SOFC is an electrochemical device using solid oxide electrolytes to generate electricity directly from oxidizing a fuel (here, LNG/liquefied natural gas).
- SOFCs are valued for fuel flexibility, low cost, low greenhouse gas emissions, high heat and power efficiency, and long-term stability.
- SOFCs operate at 500–1000°C and do not require platinum catalysts, nor are they vulnerable to CO catalyst poisoning. IT-SOFCs operate at 600–800°C; LT-SOFCs at 350–650°C. SOFC-GT systems combine SOFC with gas turbines.
- SOFCs are commonly used in stationary generators (up to ~2 MW). Their high operating temperature enables integration with marine engine heat recovery systems, improving overall fuel efficiency.
MSC World Asia’s two LNG-based SOFC units (fuel cells by Bloom Energy) have a capacity of 75 kW each (total 150 kW). While the vessel is in port, the Bloom Energy Server achieves ~60% efficiency and ~30% CO-emissions reduction without methane slip.
MSC WORLD-class ships are equipped with the latest BIO-SEA B02 0300 ballast water treatment systems (by BIO-UV Group). The system combines mechanical filtration and UV disinfection, is chemical-free, and meets the IMO-required 300 m³/hour flow rate.
In January 2021, STX France contracted ALMACO to deliver and install the MSC WORLD Class vessels’ laundry and catering equipment. The catering complex (~5000 m² / 53,820 ft²) includes 12 galleys/kitchens and 58 pantries. ALMACO also provided 46 provision stores (total ~2150 m² / 23,140 ft²). The ALMACO-installed Girbau laundry equipment is integrated into an advanced water-recycling system that purifies wastewater.

MSC's ZOE
On February 1, 2019, MSC officially unveiled the in-cabin digital assistant ZOE. The technology (“cruise industry first”) was developed by Harman International (USA-based, fully owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics), known for digital audio solutions for companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
- ZOE is a voice-enabled artificial intelligence device with advanced voice recognition available in all passenger staterooms.
- ZOE speaks seven languages, answers cruise-related questions, provides information on onboard services, activities, and facilities, and manages reservations and bookings.
- The device features far-field microphones, a high-quality speaker, quad-core processor (fast response), and Bluetooth-based direct phone connection. ZOE can upgrade its database to answer previously unanswerable questions.
- Passenger data (itinerary, tours, and onboard preferences) is stored in the Cloud Storage system and used during future voyages.
The device (approximately 15 cm) can be activated at any time. A waiver must be signed to authorize personal data storage.
Starting with MSC Bellissima (2019), ZOE is being introduced fleetwide (2019–2024) and is standard on all MSC newbuilds.
