Stena Estrid ferry Wiki

"Stena E-Flexer" is a new RO-PAX vessel class introduced by STENA LINE (a total of 12 units), chartered to Brittany Ferries, DFDS Seaways, and Stena RoRo (a subsidiary of Stena Group/shipowner).

After nearly a 2-year design period, in April 2016, STENA ordered the first four E-Flexer vessels from the Chinese shipbuilder AVIC Weihai, with options for four additional ships of the same class. Initially, the four ferries were planned for operations in the Irish Sea (homeport Belfast), but in 2018 STENA agreed to charter the third E-Flexer to Brittany Ferries.

Stena Estrid's keel-laying ceremony was held in February 2018. The vessel (hull/yard number WO263) was launched (floated out from drydock) on January 16, 2019, and delivered to Stena RoRo on November 15, 2019. Construction of the second vessel (Edda) started in June 2018. In July, STENA ordered two more sister ships, exercising all eight options in the original shipbuilding contract. Later, Stena RoRo announced additional options for four more E-Flexer units, bringing the total to 12 vessels.

The fifth E-Flexer was ordered in April 2018 and is chartered to DFDS Seaways for 10 years. In May 2018, the sixth ship (Galicia) was ordered, also under a 10-year charter to Brittany Ferries starting in late 2021. All E-Flexer ferries feature LNG-powered propulsion (running on liquefied natural gas). The sixth (DFDS-chartered) vessel serves the England UK-(France)-Spain route Portsmouth-(Le Havre)-Bilbao-Santander.

The first E-Flexer (Estrid) operates the Ireland-Wales route Dublin-Holyhead for STENA LINE. The second E-Flexer (Edda) and the fourth (Embla) operate for STENA LINE on the Northern Ireland-England route (Belfast-Liverpool/Birkenhead). Brittany Ferries operates the third and sixth E-Flexer ships on the England-Spain route (Portsmouth-Bilbao-Santander). The fifth E-Flexer operates English Channel crossings between the UK and France (Dover-Calais) under a 10-year bareboat charter to DFDS.

Stena Estrid's inaugural cruise from Holyhead was on January 13, 2020 (departure 8:55 am). The maiden voyage from Dublin departed at 2:50 pm (January 13). The ship's schedule includes two daily return crossings - from Holyhead (departure times 8:55 am and 8:30 pm) and from Dublin (departure times 2:50 pm and 2:15 am).

The vessel (IMO 9807293) is currently Cyprus-flagged (MMSI number 209878000) and registered in Limassol.

In 2021 (June 25 through July 18), the ship was deployed on the Holyhead-Belfast route, temporarily providing additional passenger capacity for STENA's Northern Ireland services.

Stena E-FLEXER ship technology

E-FLEXER-class ferries were designed by Deltamarin (a subsidiary of AVIC International), specializing in ship design and offshore engineering and construction.

The first six E-FLEXERs have a length overall (LOA) of 215 m (704 ft), a beam of 28 m (91 ft), a maximum draft of 6.4 m (21 ft), and cargo deck capacity of 3,100 lane meters (plus additional space for 120 cars).

The seventh and eighth E-FLEXERs are larger, at 45,000 GT, with an LOA of 240 m (790 ft), freight capacity of 3,600 lane meters, 263 cabins, and passenger capacity of 1,200. Interior layouts are customized according to the chartering company's requirements. Interior design was contracted to Figura Arkitekter AB (Sweden) and Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH (Germany).

Listed below are all China-built STENA E-FLEXER ships constructed by CMI Jinling (Weihai).

The first five E-FLEXERs are powered by two MaK marine diesel engines (model M43C) with a total power output of 25.2 MW (33,800 hp). The propulsion system is supplied by Caterpillar. The engines are "LNG-ready" (designed to be compatible with LNG fuel after modifications). Four E-FLEXERs (ships 6, 10, 11, and 12) are LNG-fueled by original design.

Stena E-FLEXER vessels are among the world's most energy-efficient passenger ships ever constructed.
