Avalon Illumination

The 2014-built MS Avalon Illumination cruises on the Main, Danube, and Rhine Rivers, departing from homeports including Amsterdam, Vienna, Prague, Passau, Istanbul, Bucharest, and Budapest. The vessel also offers flight-inclusive Black Sea river cruises with departures from Amsterdam, Vienna, and Istanbul.

Avalon Illumination debuted in 2014 as part of Avalon's Suite Ship fleet.

In 2024, Avalon Waterways launched a renovation project for its Suite Ship fleet. Upgrades included refreshed interiors (decor, flooring, furniture in all public spaces), faster Starlink Internet connectivity (with a second antenna on each ship), redesigned Sky Decks (with new furniture), expanded Observation Lounges (more seating), updated Gyms (with Kinesis One machines and additional free weights), and onboard bicycles (15 conventional and 4 e-bikes per ship). The refurbishment is phased over three years: 2024 (Passion, Imagery 2, Poetry 2, Panorama, Vista), 2025 (Artistry 2, Impression, Illumination, Tapestry 2, Tranquility 2), and 2026 (Expression, Visionary).

Cabins

This elegant vessel offers two decks of Panorama Suites, all featuring wall-to-wall panoramic windows that transform the space into an Open-Air Balcony. MS Avalon Illumination’s Panorama Suites measure 200 ft² and are over 30% larger than the industry standard, allowing guests to wake up to spectacular river views from the comfort of their beds.

Avalon Illumination has a total of 84 staterooms (including 2 Royal Suites, 66 Panorama Suites, and 16 cabins with non-opening windows) across six categories.

Cabin Types, Sizes, and Categories (highest to lowest):

• Amenities in all staterooms: Two twin beds convertible to a queen-size, 3-door closets with shelves, private bathroom (glass-door shower, hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers), sofa, coffee table, flat-screen TV, vanity/writing desk, floor-to-ceiling sliding door (French balcony), individual climate control, telephone, minibar, safe, deluxe pillow menu, and complimentary bottled water. Maximum occupancy: 2 guests per room.
• 2x Royal Suites (RS): Deck 3, 300 ft² / 28 m²
• Panorama Suites: P (33 cabins on Deck 3), A (23 cabins on Deck 2), B (9 cabins on Deck 2) — each 200 ft² / 18.6 m²
• Deluxe Staterooms: D (10 cabins on Deck 1), E (6 cabins on Deck 1) — each 172 ft² / 16 m²

Shipboard Facilities

Onboard amenities include an alternative dining venue at the Panorama Bistro, casual al fresco lunches at the Sky Bistro, a spacious Sky Deck with a whirlpool and premium loungers, and an expanded Fitness Center. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship.

Dining venues include the Illumination Restaurant (main dining room), Panorama Bistro, and Sky Bistro (al fresco). Additional public areas are the Panorama Lounge & Bar (with an observation deck), Club Lounge, Library/Internet Corner, Illumination Atrium Lobby, Hair Salon, Fitness Center, and Sun Deck (with Sky Lounge & Bar, Sky Bistro, whirlpool, shaded seating, and games area).

All Avalon Illumination cruise deals include Wi-Fi Internet, room service, guided land tours and excursions with certified local guides, port charges, flights, motorcoach transfers, live evening entertainment (with local performers), daily enrichment lectures, behind-the-scenes ship tours, food and wine tastings, and 24-hour premium coffee/tea/hot chocolate. Bottled water is replenished daily.

Illumination is the seventh vessel in Avalon's "Suite Ship" class. Among the ship's standout features are two full decks of Suite cabins, each equipped with wall-to-wall sliding glass doors and French Balconies, as well as spacious and diverse public areas, all offering floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows.

Each Avalon "Suite Ship" is powered by two Caterpillar Marine diesel engines (model C32 ACERT), with a combined output of 1420 kW / 1930 HP, supplemented by an emergency diesel generator. The ship features diesel-electric propulsion with one azimuth thruster located at the bow and a "Silent Drive System," which isolates the engine noise from passenger staterooms for a quieter onboard experience.

The Illumination riverboat was launched on June 3, 2014, and christened in Vienna, Austria, by Mrs. Deborah Hutton—an acclaimed Australian media personality known for her work as a TV host, magazine editor ("Darwin Life"), homewares designer for "Kmart Australia," and former brand ambassador for both "Qantas Airways" and "MYER" department stores.
