Serenade Of The Seas Review
Review of Serenade Of The Seas
The 2003-built Serenade of the Seas cruise ship is the third Radiance-class Royal Caribbean liner, with sister ships Jewel OTS, Radiance OTS, and Brilliance OTS.
The vessel (IMO number 9228344) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311492000) and registered in Nassau.
History - construction and ownership
Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US passenger shipping company, a trademarked travel brand, and a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). RCI was established in 1968 and currently holds over one-fifth of the global cruise market. The brand also operates RCG's largest fleet by both vessel count and GT tonnage (ship size and capacity).
All RCI ships have names ending with "of the Seas".

The 2500-passenger Serenade OTS fits within the Panama Canal's Panamax dimensions. This also means that all Radiance-class ships can access most regions worldwide. These mid-sized vessels offer numerous options, from dining to entertainment, and feature approximately 3 acres (1.2 hectares) of exterior glass, including glass-walled elevators with ocean views.
Decks and Cabins
Serenade Of The Seas staterooms (1074 total, in 32 grades) include 61 Suites, 517 Balcony, 247 Oceanview, and 249 Inside (3 Single). Most cabins are sized 165-190 ft2 (15-18 m2). Most cabin balconies are sized 45 ft2 (4 m2). The smallest is the Studio Interior (110 ft2 / 10 m2). The largest is the Royal Suite (1000 ft2 / 93 m2 plus a 105 ft2 / 10 m2 terrace). Wheelchair-accessible cabins total 19.
The ship has 13 decks, of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 8 contain cabins.
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
Reflections is the ship's two-deck-high formal dining room. The focal point of its decor is a cascading waterfall. For dinner, guests can choose between assigned early or late seating, or opt for My Time Dining, allowing flexible dining between 6 and 9:30 pm. Passengers selecting My Time Dining must pre-pay gratuities. The Reflections restaurant operates under an open-seating policy for breakfast and lunch. The cuisine is varied and includes alternative menu options for guests with restricted diets.
Windjammer Cafe is the main buffet venue. It is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, and informal dinner. Numerous stations serve pasta, burgers, salads, and desserts. Portofino and Chops Grille are the ship's alternative restaurants.
Chops is a steakhouse venue with an open kitchen. While Chops is enjoyable, the highlight of onboard dining is often considered Portofino, with signature dishes such as tiger shrimp risotto and spaghetti with lobster sauce. Both Chops Grille and Portofino charge a per-person service fee (US$30 at Chops and US$20 at Portofino).

Below is the complete list of Serenade of the Seas restaurants and food bars.

Itineraries
Serenade of the Seas itinerary program includes 7-day voyages in the Caribbean (roundtrips from Cartagena Colombia and Colon Panama during winter 2025-2026) and Alaska itineraries (during summer) departing roundtrip from Vancouver (BC Canada).
Following the Coronavirus crisis, Serenade OTS restarted operations on July 19, 2021, with an Alaska roundtrip from Seattle WA. The 7-day Alaska Glacier itinerary included ports such as Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Juneau, and Ketchikan, as well as scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord (Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier). Serenade became the industry's first ship to resume operations in Alaska and RCI's second ship to restart services in the USA (after Freedom OTS from PortMiami on July 2).
After the Alaska season, Serenade OTS was scheduled for an Australia-New Zealand deployment (winter 2021-2022 / October-March, homeported in Sydney NSW), followed by Alaska in 2022 (from Vancouver) and Bahamas-Western Caribbean voyages from Tampa Florida (2022-2023). However, the Australian program was canceled and replaced with Caribbean sailings (4-5-day roundtrips from Tampa) to Mexico (Cozumel, Costa Maya) and the Bahamas (Nassau, CocoCay).
In October 2021, RCI announced the company's first World Cruise (December 2023 - September 2024), which also became RCI's longest itinerary and one of the world's longest around-the-world voyages (274 nights). Read more in the ship's Wiki section.
In winter 2026-2027, the ship is scheduled to operate 7-day Mexican Riviera roundtrips from San Diego (California USA). The itinerary visits La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, and Ensenada. Prices (when bookings opened in February 2025) started at US$800 per person (double occupancy).

Serenade Of The Seas Wiki
Serenade OTS is one of Royal Caribbean's Radiance-class liners, with sister ships Brilliance, Jewel, and Radiance.
Serenade was built at Meyer Werft's Papenburg Shipyard. The vessel's godmother was the always charming and smiling Whoopi Goldberg (US actress and Oscar winner). The naming ceremony was held in NYC on August 22, 2003. The inaugural voyage started on August 25. The maiden season (2003) was based on 5-6-night roundtrips from New York to Canada and New England (USA), after which (in November) the ship was deployed in the Caribbean and homeported in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
All Radiance-class ships were constructed in compliance with Panamax standards, allowing them to transit through the Panama Canal. Serenade, along with all her sisterships, is powered by gas turbines instead of diesel engines. This design makes the vessels more fuel-efficient while also reducing emissions of harmful gases.
Serenade OTS refurbishments review
Drydock 2025
The ship's last drydock refurbishment was in March 2025 and was conducted at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport.
The project included regularly scheduled routine maintenance, technical and safety/classification inspections, hull cleaning and repainting, and minor updates to public areas.
Drydock 2022
The 2022 drydock included mainly routine maintenance works (hull cleaning and painting, mechanical and machinery inspections and upgrades), renovations to outdoor spaces (sundeck and swimming pools), and recarpeting of all indoor public areas (hallways, bars, lounges).
Drydock 2012
The list of deck plan changes after the 2012 drydock refurbishment included:
- Upgraded cabin amenities (flat-screen TVs, bathrooms with improved shower floors)
- Jumbotron (large poolside LED screen for movies, located near the main pool on the Lido Deck)
- New lounges ("Diamond" and "Concierge")
- New specialty dining venues with an additional charge (Giovanni's Table/Italian Trattoria, Izumi/Asian cuisine, Rita's Cantina/Mexican cuisine, Chef's Table/5-course VIP dining)
- Nursery
- Upgraded Centrum Atrium entertainment options (acrobatic shows, LED screens)
- R Bar (retro 1960s-themed, replacing the old Lobby Bar), Vintages Bar (wine bar), and an English pub
- Wi-Fi coverage upgraded to shipwide
- Digital signage boards installed
Comic-Con Cruise 2025
Serenade OTS is RCI's first ship to host a Comic-Con - the annual event organized by San Diego Comic-Con International (founded in 1970 as the "Golden State Comic Book Convention").
The special voyage (February 5-9, 2025, roundtrip from Tampa Florida) is a full-ship charter by Entertainment Cruise Productions (a Clayton, Missouri-based company specializing in themed voyages).
The industry's first Comic-Con cruise ship experience will feature various small-group events (including Q&A sessions, trivia, and fun contests), video gaming competitions, and themed parties (dancing, karaoke, cosplay/costume play, DJs).
When the announcement was made (in July 2023), prices (per person) ranged from US$990 (interior cabin) to US$5620 (Royal Suite) based on double occupancy, while single occupancy started at US$1240 (interior).
World Cruise 2023-2024 (RCI's first around-the-world voyage)
In October 2021, RCI announced the company's first World Cruise, which is also Royal Caribbean's longest itinerary and one of the world's longest around-the-world voyages.
The 274-night itinerary (themed "Ultimate World Cruise", from December 10, 2023, through September 10, 2024) scheduled for Serenade OTS is roundtrip from Miami and visits 150 ports and islands (57 new for RCI) in 65 countries across 7 continents.
Prices started at US$60,000 per person (double occupancy), inclusive of Business Class flights, a pre-cruise 5-star hotel stay (overnight), premium transportation (airport-hotel-ship transfers), and onboard gratuities. Loyalty program members at the Platinum level and above received bonus perks including a Shore Excursion Package (7 guided land tours), Deluxe Beverage Package, complimentary Wi-Fi Internet (VOOM Surf & Stream), and free laundry services (Wash & Fold).
The next table shows the original itinerary, with some ports later substituted due to the Red Sea crisis (Houthi attacks on marine vessels).
