Stena Ebba ferry Wiki

"Stena E-Flexer" is a new RO-PAX vessel class introduced by STENA LINE, with all units constructed in China. After a nearly 2-year design period, in April 2016 STENA ordered the first four E-Flexer ships from the Chinese shipbuilder AVIC Weihai, with options for four more units of the same class. Construction of the first E-Flexer ship (Estrid) started in February 2018. In July 2018, STENA ordered two more sisterships (Estelle and Ebba), bringing the total to all eight vessels under the original shipbuilding order. Later, Stena RoRo announced additional options for four more E-Flexer units, increasing the total to 12.

Some E-Flexers are long-term chartered to Brittany Ferries and DFDS Seaways, while the rest are operated by Stena RoRo (a subsidiary of Stena Group / shipowner). Stena ships Ebba and Estelle represent a modified "E-Flexer MkII" design—an extended version and the largest in the class—with LOA length of 240 m (788 ft), DWT (deadweight tonnage) of 8500 tons, and draft of 6.4 m. These ferries offer increased passenger capacity (30% more), 40% more cabins, 50% more beds, and 15% greater cargo capacity compared to earlier E-Flexer units.

The Stena Ebba vessel is Cyprus-flagged (MMSI 210477000) and registered in Limassol. Ebba is the 8th E-FLEXER (hull/yard number WO271) and was delivered in November 2022 (entering regular service in December 2022).

The ship's christening ceremony was held on January 11, 2023, in Karlskrona. The dockside naming event was led by godmother Ulrica Messing (1968-born, former politician and, at the time, Governor of Blekinge region) and attended by Niclas Mårtensson (Stena Line's CEO) and Marek Kiersnowski (Stena Line's Trade Director Baltic Sea South).

Estelle and Ebba are the last two of the five E-FLEXERs ordered by STENA LINE via Stena RoRo. Both ships are longer (240 vs 215 m), with greater passenger capacity (1200 vs 1000), more staterooms (263 vs 175), and higher cargo capacity (3600 lane meters vs 3100, or a 15% increase). As a result, the "E-Flexer MkII" ferries are also equipped with shore power connectivity systems.

All E-Flexer cruiseferries feature LNG-powered propulsion (running on LNG / liquefied natural gas).

On September 27, 2021, Niclas Martensson (Stena Line's CEO) announced plans to deploy the company's newest ferries (Estelle and Ebba) on the Sweden-Latvia route Nynashamn-Ventspils, replacing the older and smaller Stena Baltica and Stena Scandica, resulting in a 25% increase in freight capacity on the route. The announcement also mentioned a potential investment in battery packs for both ships, enabling partial battery-powered operation at sea to further reduce CO emissions. It was also noted that the Karlskrona Sweden-Gdynia Poland route would be expanded with Baltica and Scandica (both lengthened to 222 m), although this route was also considered a potential deployment option for the larger E-Flexers.

However, in April 2022, STENA announced that due to increased freight demand in the South Baltic Sea region, the two larger E-Flexers would be deployed on the Karlskrona-Gdynia route, starting in July with Estelle. The announcement also confirmed that Scandica and Baltica would continue operating the Nynashamn-Ventspils service.

In April 2021, AVIC CMI Jinling contracted Deltamarin (founded in 1990 and based in Turku Finland, specializing in ship design, marine construction support, and offshore engineering) for the complete design packages of the last three STENA E-FLEXER units (10th, 11th, and 12th) for two different long-term charter clients. According to available information, TBN10 was for Marine Atlantic (delivery in 2024), TBN11 for Brittany Ferries (delivery in 2024), and TBN12 also for Brittany Ferries (delivery in 2025). Each of these ships has an LOA length of 195 m, beam of 28 m, max draft of 6.5 m, total capacity of 1400 (crew and passengers), dual-fuel engines (LNG, biogas, ammonia), and a hybrid battery propulsion system (10 MWh for port maneuvering, 8 MWh for shore power charging). TBN11 has a cargo capacity of 2377 lane meters (including 176 for passenger cars), while TBN12 has 2517 lane meters (including 1388 for passenger cars).

After her delivery in 2022, Stena Ebba departed China (Weihai) on October 7, stopped for bunkering in Singapore (October 21-22, at anchorage), transited the Suez Canal (November 4-5), made a bunkering stop in Gibraltar (November 11), and then called at Portbury UK (November 14-15), Karlskrona Sweden (November 21), and Gdansk Poland (November 22).

Stena E-FLEXER ship technology

E-FLEXER-class ferries were designed by Deltamarin (a subsidiary of AVIC International), a company specializing in ship design and offshore engineering and construction.

The first six E-FLEXERs have an LOA length of 215 m (704 ft), width of 28 m (91 ft), max draft of 6.4 m (21 ft), and cargo deck capacity of 3100 lane meters (plus additional space for 120 cars).

The 7th and 8th E-FLEXERs are larger at 45000 GT-tons, with LOA length of 240 m (790 ft), freight capacity of 3600 lane meters, 263 cabins, and passenger capacity of 1200. Interior layouts are customized according to the chartering company's requirements. For their interiors, the companies Figura Arkitekter AB (Sweden) and Rheinhold & Mahla GmbH (Germany) were contracted.

Listed next are all China-built STENA E-FLEXER ships constructed by CMI Jinling (Weihai).

The first five E-FLEXERs are powered by two MaK marine diesel engines (model M43C) with a total power output of 25.2 MW (33,800 hp). The propulsion system is by Caterpillar. The engines are "LNG-ready" (designed to be compatible with LNG fuel after modifications). Four E-FLEXERs (ships 6, 10, 11, and 12) are LNG-fueled by original design.

Stena E-FLEXERs are among the world's most energy-efficient passenger ships ever constructed.
