Carnival Freedom Review
Review of Carnival Freedom
The 2007-built Carnival Freedom cruise ship is the fifth and final vessel in Carnival's Conquest-class, alongside her sisterships Conquest, Glory, Valor, and Liberty.
The vessel (IMO number 9333149) is currently Panama-flagged (MMSI 371154000) and registered in Colon.
History - Construction and Ownership
Carnival Cruise Line (CCL) is a US-based cruise brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation. CCL was founded in 1972 by Ted Arison (1924–1999), co-founder of Norwegian Cruise Line.
As of 2023, CCL operated the largest fleet in the Carnival Corporation group by number of vessels and total GT. It held ~9% of global cruise industry revenue and ~19% of total passengers. In 2024, Carnival Corporation controlled ~51% of the US$64+ billion global cruise market.
The 3000-passenger Carnival Freedom underwent a US$70 million refurbishment in 2014. The ship follows a standard Conquest-class design, with most public spaces located on Decks 3–5, fitness and spa facilities on Deck 9 and above, and most staterooms situated among or below the public decks. This layout has been standard for CCL ships since the debut of Carnival Destiny in 1996.
Enhancements to the original Conquest-class design include the addition of a Seaside Theatre (a large outdoor screen above the Lido Deck pool). However, the ship shares similar passenger flow issues as her sisterships—most notably, it is not possible to walk directly from the aft Posh Dining Room to the forward Victoriana Lounge without changing decks and passing through other public venues such as another dining room or the cigar bar.
Decks and Cabins
Carnival Freedom staterooms (1492 total, in 27 categories) include 52 Suites, 504 Balcony, 330 Oceanview, and 587 Inside cabins. There are 29 wheelchair-accessible cabins across all categories. While there are no designated "family cabins," connecting staterooms are available in various configurations. Most cabins range from 170–185 ft² (16–17 m²), with balconies ranging from 35–75 ft² (3–7 m²). The largest staterooms are Captain's Suites, measuring 500 ft² (46 m²) plus a 150 ft² (14 m²) balcony.
The ship has 13 passenger decks, 8 of which house staterooms. Over half of all accommodations are outside cabins, and 60% of those feature private balconies.
Shipboard Dining Options - Food and Drinks
Carnival Freedom features two main dining rooms offering open seating for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is served with fixed or flexible seating. The Lido buffet offers a wide variety of food stations including salads, deli items, desserts, and international cuisine. Specialty options include a reservations-only steakhouse, poolside grills, a coffee bar, sushi bar, pizzeria, and 24-hour room service with a limited menu.
Dining onboard remains mostly complimentary. Guests can enjoy burgers, burritos, and themed buffet counters offering different culinary experiences each day.
Here is the full list of Carnival Freedom’s restaurants and food venues:
- Chic Restaurant (744-seat forward dining room with fixed and “Your Time Dining” options; $5 upcharge for Seuss at Sea breakfast)
- The Posh Restaurant (1122-seat aft dining room with fixed seating for dinner and open seating for breakfast/lunch)

Shipboard Entertainment Options - Fun and Sport
In 2012, the Conquest-class received updates introducing Carnival-branded bars and a comedy club. Carnival Freedom features 22 lounges and bars, including a giant disco, piano bar, sports bar, and cigar lounge. The three-deck Victoriana Theatre hosts Vegas-style shows with live orchestras.
Freedom was the first Carnival ship with Camp Ocean (which replaced Camp Carnival) and the first to debut Bookville—an onboard play and reading room for the Seuss at Sea program. She also introduced four full-length Playlist Productions shows (30 minutes each). Additional attractions include:
- Victoriana Theatre (1400-seat main show lounge)
- Millennium Lobby Atrium with live music bar
- Chic Card Room, Art Gallery, Dynasty Conference Room
- The Fun Shops and Carnival Adventures Shop (2019 addition)
- Cherry on Top (candy and gift shop)

The 2023 drydock added the Heroes Tribute Bar (Deck 5, replacing Skybox Sports Bar) and Dreams Studio (Deck 3, Lobby). The Babylon Casino was expanded.
The Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge (forward-portside, next to the Casino) honors active and retired US military personnel. Decor includes logos of the five US military branches, memorabilia, and themed messages such as “America’s Heroes.” Specialty drinks are served in collectible pint glasses, with proceeds benefiting Operation Homefront. These glasses are also available for purchase as souvenirs.
Itineraries
Carnival Freedom primarily operates 7-day roundtrip cruises from Galveston TX to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Ports of call include Nassau, Key West, Cozumel, Belize, and Roatan.
Beginning April 27, 2021, Carnival Freedom was scheduled for Alaskan cruises from Seattle WA, including 7-day Glacier Route voyages and 8-day itineraries visiting Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, Victoria BC, and Tracy Arm Fjord. She was also scheduled to join Carnival Miracle in Alaska and later relocate to Fort Lauderdale FL for Panama Canal and Caribbean voyages. However, all 2021 Alaska cruises were canceled due to COVID-related restrictions in Canada. Carnival Freedom resumed service on October 9, 2021, from Miami.
In 2023, the ship added two Transatlantic repositioning cruises due to scheduled drydock in Cadiz, Spain (October 4–23). The eastbound Transatlantic crossing (September 21–October 4) sailed from Port Canaveral to Barcelona, and the return westbound voyage (October 23–November 6) cruised from Barcelona back to Port Canaveral.

Carnival Freedom Wiki
Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade was completed in 2014. Carnival Freedom was the first Carnival vessel to feature a reservations-only specialty restaurant (Sun King Steakhouse) and the adults-only "Serenity" retreat area. She is also the last Conquest-class liner built by Fincantieri Monfalcone, with sisterships Conquest, Glory, Liberty, and Valor. Her inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) departed on March 5, 2007, sailing a Mediterranean itinerary from Civitavecchia-Rome.
Carnival Freedom Refurbishments Review
Carnival Freedom's drydock refurbishment in 2024 (March 26–April 4) was conducted at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport (Bahamas). The project included routine maintenance, technical overhauls, classification works and safety inspections, as well as steelwork repairs, including shortening of the ship’s funnel.
The 2023 drydock (October 6–21) took place at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain. The scope of work included funnel replacement, hull and superstructure cleaning and repainting, installation of new exterior decking, and the application of Carnival's new red-white-blue hull livery. Enhancements also included the addition of the Heroes Tribute Bar (Deck 5) and Dreams Studio (Deck 3), expansion of the Casino, and renovations/upgrades to all staterooms and public areas. Notably, the replacement funnel was both designed and manufactured by Navantia.
The ship’s 2019 drydock refit (February 14–March 8), completed at Grand Bahama Shipyard (Freeport), introduced the following deck plan changes:
WaterWorks Aqua Park (Deck 10) replaced the former Stressless Pool area. The new waterpark features a 62-m / 203-ft AquaTunnel slide, Carnival’s signature 65-m / 212-ft Twister slide, a 75-gallon / 285-liter PowerDrencher tipping bucket, and a kids-only SplashZone.
Bonsai Sushi Express (Deck 9 starboard) was added as an outdoor food bar serving a variety of sushi rolls and sashimi.
The Deli (Deck 9 portside) expanded its menu to include sandwiches, traditional side dishes, and paninis.
The 9-hole Mini-Golf Course was relocated from Deck 12 to Deck 11.
Retail areas on Promenade Deck 5 were redesigned into a mall-style layout and expanded. New stores sell watches, perfumes, jewelry, and Carnival-branded merchandise, including the Carnival Adventures Shop (located next to the Internet Cafe, midship-starboard).
In 2021 (January–February), the vessel was also drydocked for routine maintenance and classification inspections.
