Piano Land Review
Review of Piano Land
MS Piano Land cruise ship was launched in 1995 as P&O Oriana, the oldest liner in the P&O UK fleet. Oriana was also one of the company’s adults-only ships, together with fleetmates Arcadia and Aurora.
In January 2026, Astro Ocean International Cruise and Adora Cruises merged into the new travel brand China Cruises.
Twinkle Travel Cruise International Co is also listed as a ship operator, operating via Well Star Travel Cruise Line China.
History - construction and ownership
MS Oriana (MMSI 310529000, Bermuda-flagged, registered in Hamilton) left the P&O fleet in August 2019. The farewell event was held onboard on August 9, while the liner was docked in Southampton after completing her final voyage for P&O UK. Oriana departed England on August 16, and the new shipowner officially took over the vessel on August 17.
The arrival in Hong Kong was scheduled for late September. For October–November 2019, short-break cruises were scheduled from Shenzhen (Shekou), followed by homeporting in Xiamen in December.
NEWS: According to unofficial sources, the vessel is scheduled to start operations (as “MS Buenavista”) in July 2026 for the new Spanish travel brand Corazul Cruceros. The 5-day inaugural cruise departs on July 4 from homeport Barcelona, to be followed by a 3-day christening cruise. Buenavista’s inaugural summer program is largely based on 8-day Mediterranean itineraries. In October, the ship is scheduled to reposition to the Caribbean, starting homeporting in La Romana (Dominican Republic). The winter deployment is planned for South America.

The 69,840-ton, 1,900-passenger Oriana was the oldest but also the fastest cruise ship in the P&O UK fleet. At the time of her debut, the vessel was among the world’s largest cruise ships and the biggest ever built in Germany.
MV Oriana was christened by HM The Queen of the UK and Commonwealth on April 6, 1995.
The ship underwent two major drydock refurbishments. The first, in December 2006, was a GBP 12 million project, during which Oriana was re-registered from the UK to Bermuda to allow onboard weddings. The second drydock took place in late 2011, when the vessel received 27 new staterooms and two new dining venues. P&O UK’s Oriana later underwent a three-week refurbishment at Blohm+Voss (Hamburg) in late November 2016, resulting in a complete renovation of all restaurants, bars, passenger staterooms, public spaces, and outdoor decks.
During P&O Oriana’s refurbishment in September 2019, new shops were added to the two-level shopping mall (Decks 6–7), featuring premium international brands specializing in leather goods, designer bags, fashion apparel and accessories, perfumes, skincare products, sunglasses, watches, tobacco, and alcohol. Shipboard payments can be made in cash, by credit cards, and via WeChat Pay and AliPay.
The current shipowner is ORIENTAL FLEET CRUISE 01 LTD, representing Astro Ocean International Cruise, a travel brand and joint venture of CTS (China National Travel Service Group Corporation Ltd) and COSCO (China Ocean Shipping Group). COSCO is currently ranked as China’s largest and the world’s sixth-largest container shipping line.
Astro Ocean Cruises itineraries
Astro Ocean Cruises first homeported Piano Land in Xiamen (China), starting operations in mid-October 2019.
In 2020, Astro Ocean introduced a new roundtrip itinerary from Shanghai, visiting Naha-Okinawa (Japan) and Ningbo-Zhoushan (China). From homeport Zhoushan, four roundtrips (departures in March 2020) were scheduled to Japan and China.
After a nearly 4.5-year hiatus, Astro Ocean Cruises resumed revenue operations with MV Piano Land on July 25, 2024, sailing from Shanghai on a 4-night roundtrip to Jeju and Shimonoseki. These roundtrips (4-night/5-day and 5-night/6-day) visited destinations in Japan (Shimonoseki, Naha, Sasebo, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Kochi) and South Korea (Jeju).
Piano Land’s 2025 cruise schedule listed itineraries to popular destinations in China (including Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, with the first departure on April 15, and Sanya’s Phoenix Island Cruise Terminal), Japan (Naha, Ishigaki, Miyakojima), and Vietnam (Ha Long Bay, Da Nang).
MS Oriana’s itinerary program was based on cruises from Southampton, including Caribbean voyages, an annual “World Cruise” (roundtrip from the UK), and roundtrips to the Canary Islands, British Isles, Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, as well as Transatlantic repositioning crossings.
The following was the ship’s final P&O cruise before her transfer to the new Chinese owner.

In June 2018, P&O UK sold the vessel to the new Chinese (state-owned) passenger shipping company "Well Star Travel Cruise", a joint venture between CTS (China Travel Services International) and COSCO Group. The new cruise line planned short-break roundtrips from homeports in China to ports in Japan and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, and Indonesia). The liner (renamed "Piano Land") is homeported in Xiamen China. As of 2019, China’s other two single-ship cruise brands are "Bohai Ferry" and "Diamond Cruise".
The current shipowner is listed as ORIENTAL FLEET CRUISE 01 LTD, while the ship management company is V-SHIPS LEISURE SAM.
The vessel (hull/yard number 636) was constructed by Meyer Werft in Papenburg (Germany).
MS Piano Land refurbishments review
During the drydock refurbishment in 2020 (at COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard), Piano Land received major interior and technical upgrades.
New suite categories were grouped into an exclusive (suite-only) complex with its own restaurant and pool deck. Suite perks include priority boarding, tendering and debarkation, VIP shopping (private experiences), complimentary WiFi, and discounted spa treatments. Many existing staterooms were upgraded to “family cabins” (triple occupancy) by adding a third bed. The two-deck-high duty-free shopping area (Decks 6-7) was expanded (tripled in size) and now features more than 100 brands.
The liner was also upgraded with a new and more powerful marine HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system.
Piano Land’s 2022 drydock (April-May, by Astro Ocean Cruise Line) was conducted in China at Zthi Zhoushan Zhongtian Heavy Industry Co Ltd’s shipyard. The 45-day drydocking project included cleaning and repainting of the hull and superstructure (new anti-rust hull coating), technical upgrades (hardware and software, equipment overhauls), regularly scheduled classification works, hotel upgrades (renovation of public areas), replacement of ballast water tanks, and installation of shore power capabilities.
Piano Land’s 2024 drydocking (June 20-July 10, at COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard) included major updates to the security and WiFi systems, outdoor deck renovations (new teak and recycled plastic coverings), replacement of pipes, installation of new cabling (8+ km/5+ mi of new cables), and machinery overhauls.
MS Oriana refurbishment 2016 review
The ship’s last drydock refurbishment under P&O UK ownership took place in 2016, with Richmond International (a luxury hotel design firm) as refurbishment contractor. The three-week project (November 25–December 15) was carried out at Blohm+Voss Shipyard (Hamburg Germany) and resulted in the following deckplan changes:
- Refurbishment works included renovation of all staterooms, lounges, restaurants, and all indoor and outdoor public spaces.
- All passenger cabins and suites received new soft furnishings; furniture was refreshed (repaired or replaced), bathrooms were upgraded, and cabin balconies were renovated.
- Upgraded venues included Lord’s Tavern (sports bar on Promenade Deck 7), Riviera Bar (poolside bar on Lido Deck 12), The Conservatory restaurant (Deck 12), Anderson’s Bar (Deck 7), Oasis Spa & Fitness (wellness complex on Lido Deck), and the ship’s main lounge, Theatre Royal (Promenade Deck 7).
- The Conservatory and The Beach House (both aft on Lido Deck 12) were upgraded with new service counters and redesigned layouts (increased seating and more two-seat tables).
- Anderson’s Bar (midship on Deck 7) received new furniture (bar stools, sofas, tables, chairs, lamps), along with new carpets and rugs.
- The Oasis wellness complex received new tiling in the thermal area (sauna, steam room, spa whirlpool, changing rooms), new modern furniture, washbasins and treatment beds. The beauty salon and gym equipment were upgraded, and luxurious heated loungers plus a living plant wall were added in the spa area.
- Theatre Royal was updated with refreshed seating upholstery, and new sound and lighting equipment was installed.
- The ship’s two main dining rooms (Peninsular and Oriental) were updated with new carpets, curtains, lighting (including new designs), and color schemes.
In January 2018, Oriana entered a three-week drydock for technical maintenance.

MS Piano Land was officially named in Port Xiamen on September 26, 2019. The christening ceremony was held dockside at Xiamen International Cruise Terminal and was followed by the maiden voyage for Well Star Travel Cruise Line, which departed later the same day.
MS Oriana was P&O’s first newbuild vessel designed specifically for the UK market. She is currently the oldest ship in the P&O UK fleet. The vessel was named after “SS Oriana” (launched in 1959), an ocean liner operated between 1960 and 1986 by P&O Cruises’ predecessors, P&O Orient Lines and later P&O Line.
The ship’s christening ceremony was held on April 6, 1995, and featured HM The Queen of the UK (Elizabeth II, 1926–2022) as godmother. Other P&O cruise ships named by British Royals include Britannia (March 10, 2015, by HM The Queen), Aurora (April 27, 2000, by HRH Princess Royal), and the ships Oceana and Adonia (now Azamara Pursuit), both named on May 21, 2003, by HRH Princess Royal and her daughter Zara Phillips.
P&O Oriana proudly holds the “Golden Cockerel” trophy (since 1997) for being the fleet’s fastest ship. The trophy was previously held by SS Oriana and later by SS Canberra (until 1997), when it was handed over to Oriana. Both liners were anchored near Cannes France and each sent out a tender boat for the handover ceremony.
In 2006, the ship’s flag state/registry was changed from UK (London) to Bermuda (Hamilton), as the Bermuda flag state allows onboard weddings. Oriana is one of P&O’s adults-only vessels, together with Arcadia.
The following tables show the port sequences of MV Oriana’s final cruises for P&O UK in 2019, all roundtrips from homeport Southampton England.
