Basel/Basle (port locode CHBSL) is a Rhine River cruise port and city in Switzerland, with a population of around 200,000 (ranking it Switzerland's 3rd most - after Geneva and Zurich). Basel is also the country's only cargo port serving ocean-going cargo ships docking at Rotterdam. The city is located near three country borders (French, German and Swiss). Some of its suburbs are on the territories of Germany and France. The official language is German.

On shore excursions/roundtrip bus tours from Basel can visit Alpnachstad (from where via the mountain railroad Pilatus Railway is accessed the Pilatus Mountain) and also Berne, Interlaken, Lucerne, and Kriens. Cruisetours may also include bus excursions to Kembs (France's Alsace region, Haut-Rhin department). Bus tours from Zurich visit Bienne, Neuchatel, Geneva, Gruyeres, Broc, Charmey, Gstaad, and Grindelwald (train travel to Jungfraujoch).

Some cruisetours have their itinerary's first leg ending in Austria (Salzburg), from where tourists are transported by luxury coaches to Switzerland (St Moritz via Innsbruck). The buses then leave from St Moritz to Basel, visiting Chur (train travel to Tasch and Zermatt), Chateau de Chillon, Berne, Interlaken, Lucerne, and end in Basel (ship embarkation port for the itinerary's second leg).

Basel Switzerland is also the flag-state (port of registry) for many European river cruise ships. All major European river cruise companies offer voyages to and from Basel. Most itineraries are between Basel and Amsterdam (northbound and southbound). As a riverport for Zurich, Basel is the embarkation-debarkation point. The distance between both cities is approx 76 km (48 mi). The train travel time is 1 hour.

Zurich is located on Lake Zurich (Limmat River). Most cruise tours are from Zurich to Vienna Austria and include passing the Main-Danube Canal. Itineraries start in Zurich, with included travel to Basel for boarding the riverboat. Zurich is Switzerland's largest city (population over 400,000, metro around 2 million) and is located at the lake's northwestern tip. Zurich is among the world's largest financial centers being home to major financial institutions and banks.

From Basel are also offered bus tours to Schaffhausen.

Basel is a practical city to explore independently, but its river ships use several landing stages rather than one central cruise terminal. St. Johann is close to the Old Town, while Klybeck and Dreiländereck are farther downstream in working port districts. Confirm the ship’s exact berth before planning your route.

At a Glance

Independent with some planning or transport. Basel’s compact Old Town is highly walkable and public transport is extensive. Passengers at St. Johann can usually begin sightseeing on foot; those berthed at Klybeck or Dreiländereck will normally find a tram or taxi more convenient.

  • Best for a short visit: Old Town, Basel Minster, the Rhine waterfront and Mittlere Brücke.
  • Typical city visit: Allow 3–5 hours for a highlights walk, refreshments and one short museum visit.
  • Terrain: Riverside paths are generally easy, but the Old Town includes cobbled lanes, slopes and steps.

Getting from the Cruise Port

St. Johann

This is the most convenient passenger terminal. It is near St. Johanns-Tor and approximately 1.2 km (0.7 mi) from Marktplatz, taking about 15–20 minutes on foot. The approach into the Old Town is slightly uphill in places. Local trams and buses are useful for returning when time or mobility is limited.

Klybeck

Klybeck lies downstream in an industrial riverside district, roughly 2.7 km (1.7 mi) from Marktplatz. Walking into the center can take around 35–45 minutes and is less attractive than starting by public transport or taxi. Tram connections are available from the surrounding neighborhood, but passengers should follow the directions posted at the landing stage because more than one quay may be used.

Dreiländereck

This terminal is near the Three Countries Corner and approximately 4.7 km (2.9 mi) by road from Marktplatz. A taxi generally provides the simplest connection, while public transport requires reaching the nearest stop from the port area. Walking all the way to the Old Town is possible but consumes too much of a short visit.

All three principal landing areas are designed for step-free access to the ships. At St. Johann, an elevator and escalator connect the lower riverside level with the promenade. Accessibility between adjacent ships may differ when vessels are moored side by side.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Explore Basel’s Old Town

Allow 2.5–4 hours for Marktplatz and its red Town Hall, the lanes around Spalenberg, Barfüsserplatz, Basel Minster and the Pfalz terrace overlooking the Rhine. These sights are close enough to combine on foot, although cobbles and gradients make comfortable footwear advisable.

Walk Both Sides of the Rhine

Combine the historic center with Mittlere Brücke and the riverside promenade in Kleinbasel. If operating during the visit, one of Basel’s small current-powered ferries offers a distinctive way to cross the Rhine. Ferry operation can be affected by river conditions, so keep a bridge-based alternative.

Choose One Museum

Basel has many museums, but one carefully selected collection is more realistic during a port call. Kunstmuseum Basel is convenient for combining with the Old Town, while Museum Tinguely requires a short tram or taxi ride east of the center. Allow at least 1.5–2 hours for the museum itself and check same-day opening information before leaving the ship.

Visit the Three Countries Corner

This is easiest for passengers already berthed at Dreiländereck. The monument marks the meeting area of Switzerland, France and Germany, although the precise geographical border point lies in the Rhine. From another berth, it is a secondary attraction rather than a substitute for the Old Town.

Self-Guided Old Town and Rhine Walk

Distance: approximately 4.5 km (2.8 mi) from St. Johann terminal and back. Pure walking time: about 65–75 minutes. Recommended total time: 3–4 hours. Difficulty: moderate, with cobbles, slopes and optional steps.

  1. St. Johann terminal: Leave the riverside landing stage and walk toward the preserved St. Johanns-Tor.
  2. Spalentor: Continue to one of Basel’s best-preserved medieval city gates.
  3. Spalenberg: Follow the narrow Old Town lanes downhill toward the center.
  4. Marktplatz and Town Hall: See the square and the richly decorated exterior and courtyard of the Rathaus.
  5. Basel Minster and Pfalz: Walk through the historic center to the cathedral square and Rhine viewpoint.
  6. Mittlere Brücke: Descend toward the river and cross the historic central bridge for views of the Old Town waterfront.
  7. Rhine promenade: Return toward St. Johann along the river, crossing back at Johanniterbrücke.

Passengers starting at Klybeck or Dreiländereck should take public transport or a taxi to Marktplatz and begin the circuit there. A shorter central loop from Marktplatz through the Minster quarter, Mittlere Brücke and Barfüsserplatz is approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi) and takes around two hours with stops.

Longer Excursions

Trips to the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, the Roman site of Augusta Raurica or nearby Alsace are possible on a longer call. Each requires transport and reduces the time available in central Basel. Public transport works well for independently visiting the Fondation Beyeler, while a guided excursion or prearranged transfer is more comfortable for countryside or cross-border itineraries.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm the berth by name and address; “Basel port” is not precise enough for arranging a taxi or planning a walk.
  • Purchase the correct public-transport ticket before boarding. The BaselCard provides free local transport only to eligible overnight guests, not automatically to all cruise passengers.
  • Carry Swiss francs or a payment card. Switzerland is outside the euro area, although some tourist businesses may accept euros at their own exchange rate.
  • Do not treat swimming in the Rhine as a casual port-call activity. The current is strong, conditions vary and local knowledge is important.
  • Allow at least 30–45 minutes of return margin for a central berth and more when returning to Klybeck or Dreiländereck. Increase this margin if relying on public transport or if the ship has specified an early all-aboard time.
