Viking Modi Review

Review of Viking Modi

The 2015-built Longship Viking Modi cruises on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia, departing from Basel and Nuremberg.

This Viking longship is named after Modi (meaning "angry"), in Norse mythology the son of Thor and brother of Magni. Modi is among the most powerful gods in the Norse pantheon, known for his brute strength and fearlessness. He is associated with berserker warriors, who fought with intense bravery and trance-like ferocity, showing no fear of death.

Longship Viking Modi cruise ship

The boat (ENI number 7002017) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057499) and registered in Basel.

Cabins

Viking Modi accommodates 190 guests in 95 staterooms. The Longships feature two Explorer Suites (the largest on European rivers) as well as seven Veranda Suites (two-room accommodations with a veranda and a French balcony). The 39 Veranda Staterooms have full-size balconies, complemented by 22 French Balcony staterooms.

Cabin types/categories (number, location), from highest to lowest:

  • Suites - ES (2, Deck 3), AA (7, Deck 3); Balcony Staterooms - A (20, Deck 3), B (17, Deck 2); French Balcony Staterooms (with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors) - C (5, Deck 3), D (15, Deck 2); RiverView Staterooms - E (18, Deck 1), F (7, Deck 1).

Shipboard facilities

Viking Modi features the same signature design elements as other Viking Longships, including deluxe accommodations, streamlined Scandinavian interiors, and advanced engineering. A key innovation is the all-weather Aquavit Terrace, which brings the outdoor scenery indoors and allows guests to enjoy river views and al fresco-style dining regardless of weather conditions. All Viking Longships, including Viking Modi, feature onboard solar panels and organic herb gardens. Their hybrid engines are energy-efficient and reduce vibrations for a smoother sailing experience.

Dining venues include the main Restaurant and the Aquavit Terrace (alfresco dining). Additional facilities include an Observation Lounge, Atrium (lobby), Library (with Internet access), onboard shop (gifts and souvenirs), and a Sun Deck with a shaded relaxation area, Sky Bar, herbal garden, putting green, walking track, and shuffleboard. The ship does not have a gym, pool, whirlpool, or spa.

Viking Modi cruise fares include Wi-Fi, all shore excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and daily replenished bottled water.

Viking Modi river cruise prices are per person, based on double occupancy, and are indicative only. Actual rates may vary depending on travel agency promotions, special offers, discounts, group bookings, or last-minute deals. On select itineraries and dates, Viking may offer discounted round-trip airfare from the USA (on selected cabin categories).

Viking Modi Wiki

Transfers to and from the Viking Modi, as well as airport meet-and-greet services, are included in the cruise fare only when airfare is purchased through the Viking cruise line.

Viking Modi is part of the latest generation of Viking Cruises longships. This patented riverboat design allows for larger accommodations without reducing public space or compromising overall comfort. The ship represents the line’s newest Longship-class design, featuring energy-efficient hybrid engines, solar panels, and interiors by Yran & Storbraaten (Norway). The patented longship concept (developed by Rottet Studios, USA) enables significantly larger staterooms with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor off-center by 1 m (3.3 ft).

The riverboat’s godmother is Mrs. Faye Pirie, one of the company’s long-serving employees (Specialist Cruise Consultant). Other Viking Cruises longships launched in 2015 include Astrild, Beyla, Eir, Gefjon, Lofn, Mani, Mimir, Skirnir, Ve, Vidar, and Vili.
