Viking Dagur Review

Review of Viking Dagur

The 2025-built Longship Viking Dagur cruises on the Rhine River, visiting destinations in the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland. The vessel departs from homeports Amsterdam and Basel.

This riverboat is named after the Norse god Dagur (Day), the son of Dellingr (Dawn) and Nott (Night).

Longship Viking Dagur cruise ship

The ship (ENI number TBA) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI TBA) and registered in Basel.

Viking officially christened the longship Dagur on October 21, 2025. The naming ceremony was part of a group event for nine new riverboats introduced globally into the fleet — Annar, Dagur, Eldir, Honir (the 100th vessel), Nerthus, Gyda (Douro), Amun, Thoth (Nile), and Tonle (Mekong).

All Viking River Cruises longships are fitted with solar panels (mounted aft on the Sun Deck) and hybrid (diesel-electric) powerplants based on energy-efficient marine engines.

Cabins

Viking Dagur has a total of 95 staterooms (9 Suites, 39 Balcony, 22 French Balcony, and 25 Porthole with non-opening windows) across 8 cabin categories, accommodating up to 190 passengers.

The ship features two aft-located Explorer Suites with wraparound balconies providing 270-degree panoramic views. Each of the seven Veranda Suites consists of two separate rooms and includes a step-out balcony (living room) and a French balcony (bedroom). The 39 Veranda Staterooms also have step-out balconies.

The vessel accommodates up to 190 passengers, served by 53 crew and staff, offering modern hotel-style amenities and high-quality service.

Cabin types/categories (number, location), from highest to lowest:

  • Suites — ES-Explorer (2, Deck 3 aft), AA-Veranda (7, Deck 3 portside)
  • Balcony Staterooms — A (20, Deck 3 starboard), B (17, Deck 2 starboard)
  • French Balcony Staterooms — C (5, Deck 3 portside aft), D (15, Deck 2 portside)
  • Standard Staterooms (porthole window) — E (18, Deck 1 midship), F (7, Deck 1 midship aft)

Shipboard facilities

The Observation Bar Lounge features floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto the Aquavit Terrace, a bow-located indoor-outdoor venue designed for relaxation and alfresco dining. The Sun Deck offers 360-degree unobstructed river views and is serviced by the Aquavit Terrace staff.

The Sun Deck includes a forward area with the Sky Bar (outdoor seating with tables and deckchairs), SkyLight (glass roof over the Atrium), and the Wheelhouse (Navigation Bridge). Midship is a shaded seating area (covered by a retractable awning and encircled by a walking track), along with a sunbathing area with loungers. The aft section features a putting green (mini-golf), herb garden, and deck games (shuffleboard and a giant outdoor chessboard).

Dining options include the main Dining Room and the Aquavit Terrace (Lido buffet with sliding doors opening to an alfresco terrace). Additional facilities include a two-deck Atrium (lobby with 24-hour Reception), Library (Internet Lounge), and Shop (gifts and souvenirs).

Viking Longships do not feature a fitness center, swimming pool, whirlpool, spa/beauty salon, or self-service laundry facilities.

One elevator connects Decks 2 and 3 only. All decks are also accessible via stairs located forward (Grand Staircase in the Atrium), midship, and aft.

Viking Dagur Wiki

Viking Dagur is one of the new-generation longships of Viking Cruises. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger passenger accommodations without reducing public space or compromising overall onboard comfort.

Longship Dagur represents Viking Cruises' latest design, featuring energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and an interior design developed by "Yran & Storbraaten" (Norway). The patented "longship" concept (by "Rottet Studios," USA) enables significantly larger cabins with full-size step-out balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) off-center.

The vessel's powerplant consists of two main Caterpillar marine diesel engines (model CAT32-ACERT) with a total output of 2 MW. These are V12 engines (12 cylinders driving a single crankshaft). The propulsion system is based on two Caterpillar marine propulsion units (model CAT18-ACERT) with a combined output of 1 MW.
