Viking Herja Review

Review of Viking Herja

The 2016-built Longship Viking Herja cruises on the Rhine and Moselle rivers in France, Germany, and Switzerland, departing from homeports Trier (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland).

This Viking longship is named after Herja, a mighty valkyrie from Old Norse mythology. Valkyries (Valkyria, translated as “chooser of the slain”) are female mythological figures who determine who lives and who dies on the battlefield.

Viking Herja features an innovative corridor configuration (patented design), modern engineering and technology, signature Scandinavian-themed decor, premium stateroom amenities, an itinerary-based and expert-led enrichment program, themed onboard entertainment, efficient use of public spaces, the signature Aquavit Terrace lounge, and numerous cabins with step-out balconies. Each Viking Longship also features two of the European river cruise industry’s largest suites.

Viking Herja Wiki

To/from Viking Herja boat transfers and airport meet-and-greet services are included in the cruise fares only when air travel is purchased through Viking Cruises.

Viking Herja is one of the latest-generation Viking Cruises Longships. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger accommodations without reducing public areas or compromising overall comfort. The vessel represents the line’s latest Longship-class design, featuring energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and an interior by Yran & Storbraaten (Norway). The patented “longship” design (by Rottet Studios, USA) enables significantly larger accommodations with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor off-center by 1 m (3.3 ft).

As is traditional for Viking River Cruises, Herja’s naming ceremony was part of a group christening event. On March 7, 2017, a double christening ceremony was held, during which Viking Herja was officially named together with Viking Hild. The event took place in Germany, at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel rivers, near the border with France.

The riverboat’s godmother is Mrs. Debbie Wiseman (British composer for film and television, conductor, and radio/TV presenter). The ceremonial bottle was Veuve Clicquot Champagne. Viking Hild’s godmother is Princess Stephanie von Brenken, wife of Prince Carl Friedrich of Lowenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. Princess Stephanie is also CEO of the family-owned winery “Weingut Fürst Löwenstein.” The family’s residence is featured as an exclusive (Privileged Access) Viking river cruise excursion, offering tours of the estate and winery.
