Viking Idun

The 2014-built Longship Viking Idun cruises on the Danube River through Germany, Hungary, Austria, and Slovakia, with departures from Passau, Nuremberg, Paris, Budapest, and Prague.

This Viking longship is named after Idun (Idunn) – in Norse mythology, the goddess of youth and rejuvenation, and the keeper of the Golden Apples, the source of immortality for the gods.

Viking Idun was designed as a “green ship” by the renowned architects Yran & Storbraaten, featuring solar panels, hybrid energy-efficient engines, and an onboard organic herb garden.

The vessel (ENI number 7001951) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057388) and registered in Basel.

Cabins

Viking Idun has 95 outside staterooms (two Explorer Suites, seven Veranda Suites, 39 Veranda Staterooms, 22 French Balcony Staterooms, and 25 Standard Staterooms) across 8 categories. All suites feature two rooms, with a veranda off the living room and a French balcony in the bedroom. Explorer Suites offer 270-degree views of the river and surrounding scenery.

Shipboard facilities

Viking Idun’s dining options include the Idun Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (al fresco). The Aquavit Terrace is located at the bow and offers both indoor and outdoor seating with floor-to-ceiling windows. The Sun Deck’s shaded seating area provides an ideal setting to enjoy the passing scenery. Onboard amenities also include an Observation Lounge, Atrium (lobby), Library (with Internet access), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), Sky Bar, Herbal Garden, putting green, walking track, and shuffleboard. The longship does not have a gym, pool, jacuzzi, or spa.

Viking Idun cruise deals typically include Wi-Fi, all tours and excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and replenished daily bottled water.

Viking Idun river cruise prices are per person and based on double occupancy. These rates are indicative and may vary depending on travel agency promotions, special offers and discounts, group bookings, or last-minute deals. On select Danube itineraries, Viking may offer discounted round-trip USA airfare (on selected cabins or departure dates).

River Cruise Itineraries

The following are Viking Idun river cruise itineraries by theme, as officially announced by Viking Cruises:

• "ROMANTIC DANUBE" – 7-day cruises from Nuremberg to Budapest and vice versa. These itineraries include visits to 3 countries (Austria, Germany, Hungary) and 6 complimentary land tours/excursions. Disembarkation in Nuremberg offers optional 2-night Nuremberg or 3-night Prague hotel packages (Czech Republic). On departures from Germany (Nuremberg), sailing begins on Day 2 with a cruise through the Main-Danube Canal (including lock passages) and ends in Budapest (with an optional 2-night hotel package).
• "CITIES OF LIGHT" – 11-day cruises from Paris to Prague and vice versa. These itineraries include visits to 4 countries (France, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Republic) and 10 complimentary land tours/excursions. The fare includes a 2-night Paris luxury hotel stay, train travel to Luxembourg, bus transfer to Trier (Moselle River embarkation), bus transfer from Koblenz to Marksburg Castle (re-embarkation in Braubach), and bus transfer from Nuremberg to Prague (including a 2-night Prague luxury hotel stay). Optional extensions include additional nights in Prague or Paris.
• "RHINE RHAPSODY" – 9-day Moselle and Rhine cruises from Paris to Basel and vice versa. These itineraries include visits to 4 countries (France, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland) and 8 complimentary land tours/excursions. The fare includes a 2-night Paris luxury hotel stay, train travel to Luxembourg, and transfers to Trier (Moselle embarkation). Optional extensions include a 2-night stay in Lucerne (Swiss Alps) or a 3-night stay in Montreux (Lake Geneva region). On departures from Basel, sailing begins on Day 2 (evening), with an optional 2-night Paris hotel stay at the end.

Transfers to and from the Viking Idun and airport meet-and-greet services are included in the fare only when airfare is purchased through the Viking cruise line.

Viking Idun is part of the latest generation of Viking Cruises longships. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger accommodations without reducing the size of public areas or compromising overall comfort. The vessel represents the line’s latest Longship-class riverboat design. Viking Cruises longships feature energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and interior design by Yran & Storbraaten (Norway). The patented longship design by Rottet Studios (USA) enables significantly larger passenger accommodations with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor 1 m (3.3 ft) off-center.

The riverboat’s godmother is Dr. Lisa Randall, a Harvard University professor of physics and cosmology, who, together with Dr. Sundrum, co-authored the theory of multiple dimensions of space (multi-layered universe). The ship’s christening ceremony was held in Amsterdam, Holland. On March 21, 2012, Idun was inaugurated together with the Viking longships Odin (both in Amsterdam), and via live video link with Rostock, also with Freya and Njord.
