MSC Magnifica Review

Review of MSC Magnifica

The 2010-built MSC Magnifica cruise ship is the fourth and last of MSC Cruises' Musica-class liners, with sisterships Orchestra, Poesia, Musica.

The vessel (IMO number 9387085) is currently Panama-flagged (MMSI 352594000) and registered in Colon.

History - construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples. It was established in 1960. Today, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) - the world's 2nd largest containership company. MSC Crociere is the world's largest privately-owned cruise company.

By annual passenger shipping volumes, MSC is ranked the world's 3rd largest cruise shipowner - following only Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group.

MSC Magnifica cruise ship

The 2500-passenger ship MSC Magnifica sailed for the first time in March 2010 with a series of Mediterranean voyages. Magnifica is the first MSC cruise ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean to New York, a fact that is quite unusual for a European company.

Decks and Cabins

MSC Magnifica staterooms (1774 total, in 8 grades) include 52 Suites, 779 Balconies, 173 Oceanviews, 249 Inside. Most staterooms are sized 130-190 ft2 / 13-18 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 40 ft2 / 4 m2. The largest are the Balcony Suites (235 ft2 / 22 m2 plus 100 ft2 / 10 m2 terrace).

The boat has 16 decks, of which 13 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

MSC Magnifica decks are named after famous Italian Riviera port towns.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Two formal restaurants onboard MSC Magnifica serve Mediterranean and Italian cuisine in traditional assigned seatings. Two buffet restaurants, which seem like a single dining area during the day, with long-serving counters, provide casual dining for breakfast and lunch. The aft buffet restaurant is reserved at night for seated dining and features a steak-house menu and extra charge; the forward one serves pizza. The à la carte sushi and Asian speciality restaurants require reservations and carry an additional charge. Ship's room service is limited to a menu including cold sandwiches and Continental Breakfast. Midnight buffets vary, ranging from traditional shipboard gala affair to themed snack-type offerings.

The vessel (STX France, Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard/hull number T32) has volume 95128 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 9429 tons, max draught 7,9 m. The powerplant is based on Wartsila marine diesel engines (model W16V38B) with combined output 36,05 MW (48340 hp). The registered shipowner is S32 LEASING CO LTD, while the registered manager is MSC MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING CO.

Magnifica was delivered to MSC on February 25, 2010, and christened in Hamburg on March 1st by godmother Sofia Loren.

Magnifica belongs to MSC's Musica-class, with sisterships Musica, Orchestra, Poesia. Magnifica was MSC's first liner to try the Canada-New England market with homeporting in NYC (New York USA). The deployment started right after the maiden Mediterranean season (2010-2011 winter) based on 7-10-11-day voyages and homeporting in Venice.

MSC Magnifica refurbishments review

The ship's last drydock refurbishment is scheduled for 2025 (October-November) to be conducted at Malta's Palumbo Shipyard (in Valletta). The drydocking will feature major enhancements, including a new wellness complex (spa and gym) and an MSC Yacht Club (luxury complex spanning the 5 upper floors.

  • Magnifica's MSC Yacht Club's private/exclusive facilities include a restaurant, a bar lounge, and a sundeck (with a swimming pool, bar, grill restaurant), as well as 63 (new) top-tier staterooms.
  • The new/redesigned wellness complex (sized 270 m2/2900 ft2) consists of the MSC Aurea Spa and a Techogym Fitness Center.

In 2021, Magnifica was drydocked for a USD 140 million reconstruction and refurbishment. The project includes stretching the vessel by 23 m (76 ft) by cutting it in half and inserting midship a pre-fabricated section (hull and superstructure).

Following the drydock (January-March 2021), the ship has 215 more cabins (including 92 with balconies), new Aqua Park (with waterslide), a completely redesigned kids playground, 2 new restaurants, larger shopping complex. The number of staterooms was increased from 1259 to 1774.

The refit project created an additional 7000 m2 (75350 ft2) of onboard space. Ship's machinery was upgraded with new maritime technologies, among which the pro-environment SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction), AWT (Advanced Wastewater Treatment) and shoreside power capabilities.

The ship's last drydocking was in 2024 (December 2-26) conducted at the Palumbo shipyard in Valletta Malta. The project was for routine maintenance and classification works, technical (machinery and system) overhauls, minor steel works, underwater hull cleaning/repainting.

In 2014, the vessel was refurbished at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam.

For the 118-day "MSC World Cruise 2019" (two departures - January 5th roundtrip from Genoa, and January 6th roundtrip from Marseille), MSC hired the celebrity chefs Ramon Freixa (Spain), Vikas Khanna (India), Carlo Cracco (Italy), Jean-Philippe Maury (France), Jereme Leung (China), Allan Vila Espejo (Brazil), Jorge Rausch (Colombia), Serge Dansereau (Canada).

Each chef developed one 3- or 4-course menu during a themed evening. The exclusive meals also allowed passengers to meet and interact with celebrities.
