Norwegian Luna

The 2026-built Norwegian Luna cruise ship is the second PRIMA PLUS-series vessel and the fourth of six PRIMA-class NCL liners constructed in Italy by Fincantieri (Monfalcone Yard). Her same-design sistership is Aqua (2025). By design, Aqua is also a sister to the 10% smaller (142500 GT) Prima (2022) and Viva (2023), as well as the 10% larger (172000 GT) Aura (2027) and TBN6 (2028).

The vessel (IMO number 9824019) will sail under the Bahamas flag (MMSI tba) and be registered in Nassau.

NCL’s previous BREAKAWAY PLUS-class vessels were all built by Meyer Werft Germany (in Papenburg).

Norwegian Luna’s hull artwork will be designed by the American graffiti/street artist ELLE (from Napa, California). Norwegian Aqua’s hull design is titled “La Luna”, displayed on the bow. For the project, ELLE partnered with the fashion brands Nike, Reebok, and Ralph Lauren. The artwork is themed on the human connection to celestial forces, specifically the intrinsic link between people and the moon.

History – construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). Founded in 1966 and headquartered in Miami, Florida, the company is publicly traded on the NYSE (New York City). NCLH’s major shareholders include Apollo Global Management (USA), Genting Group (Malaysia), and TPG Capital (USA).

In 2017, NCL held an 8.7% global passenger market share and 8.4% revenue share.

NCLH owns the brands NCL, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Decks and Cabins

Norwegian Luna offers 1760 staterooms in seven main types: The Haven Suites (123 total), Suites, Club Balcony Suites (Mini-Suites), Balcony, Oceanview, Interior staterooms, and Studios (single-occupancy cabins with no single supplement).

The PRIMA PLUS design features 19 Suite categories (including the fleet’s first 3-bedroom Duplex Suites) and the largest Inside, Oceanview, and Balcony staterooms in the NCL fleet.

The ship also offers ADA-certified wheelchair-accessible staterooms.

The smallest category is T1-Studio (95 ft2 / 9 m2). Studio guests have exclusive access to the Studio Lounge. Norwegian Luna also introduces three new single-occupancy cabin options (Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview, Solo Balcony), available at lower fares than standard double-occupancy categories.

Inside staterooms are 160-255 ft2 (15-24 m2). Oceanview types include Standard (185 ft2 / 17 m2), Large (235 ft2 / 22 m2), and Family (235-370 ft2 / 22-34 m2). Balcony staterooms measure 230-270-360 ft2 (21-25-34 m2), with step-out balconies sized 45-70-100 ft2 (4-7-9 m2).

Among the largest accommodations are NCL’s first “The Haven Three-Bedroom Duplex Suites” (category H8), designed by Piero Lissoni. These two-floor apartments feature three bedrooms, king-size beds, floor-to-ceiling/wall-to-wall windows, and large private terraces/sundecks.

The ship has 20 decks, 16 accessible to passengers and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

The PRIMA-class design provides expanded indoor and outdoor public spaces, a lower guest capacity than the BREAKAWAY and BREAKAWAY PLUS classes, new dining and entertainment options, and 35 dining venues and bars/lounges (including seven fleet-first concepts), along with heightened service levels.

The Waterfront concept has been reimagined as Ocean Boulevard, a 360-degree promenade (44000 ft2 / 4090 m2) wrapping around Deck 8. It offers unobstructed sea views and includes two infinity pools, Oceanwalk glass bridges, Indulge Food Hall (NCL’s first open-air marketplace), and The Concourse sculpture garden (with selfie installations and metal artworks by Alexander Krivosheiw and David Harber).

Penrose Atrium is NCL’s first three-level atrium (decks 6-7-8). The glass-walled space features panoramic sea views, futuristic architecture, a 3-ton constellations-themed crystal chandelier (Lasvit), floor-height wall art resembling a topographic map, retail shops, and bars (including Starbucks, Whiskey Bar, Penrose Bar, and Luna Casino).

• The Commodore Room and Hudson’s Room (Main Dining Rooms, fine dining, complimentary) with revamped fixed menus featuring international dishes, vegetarian/vegan options, build-your-own pasta (24 combinations), and a Specialties menu offering selections from specialty restaurants.
• Los Lobos Cantina – a new à-la-carte Mexican restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating, serving classics such as tableside guacamole, fresh tortillas, Tacos Al Pastor, Chicken Enchiladas de Mole, and handcrafted cocktails.
• Onda by Scarpetta – an Italian specialty venue (reservations, cover charge) with indoor/outdoor seating, offering oven-baked pizzas, daily homemade pasta, seafood, salads, breads, desserts, and fine Italian wines.
• Coco’s – patisserie serving artisan sweets.
• Seaside Rotisserie – grilled and spit-roasted meats.
• Nudls – noodle dishes and global street food.
• Tamara – classic Indian dishes with vegetarian options.

The aft Indulge Food Hall (with a firepit) is an open-air marketplace hosting 11 eateries (indoor/outdoor seating), Luna Bar, Indulge Outdoor Lounge, Soleil Bar, Waves Pool Bar, and a Starbucks service area.

Sukhothai (deck 17) is NCL’s first Thai specialty restaurant, designed by SMC Design, serving authentic Thai dishes in a contemporary interior.

Swirl Wine Bar (deck 6) is a modern wine lounge designed by Studio Dado, inspired by Arizona’s Antelope Canyon.

Metropolitan Bar (deck 7 aft) is NCL’s first sustainable bar, serving zero-waste cocktails, green spirits, biodynamic wines, and featuring Dominic Harris’s interactive digital artwork “Every Wing Has a Silver Lining”.

Nama (Japanese sashimi and sushi bar) features manga-inspired décor.

Other onboard dining choices include The Latin Quarter, Just Desserts, and Just Ice Cream.

“The Haven by Norwegian” spans eight aft decks and houses 107 Haven Suites, two exclusive elevators, private public areas, and floor-to-ceiling sea views throughout.

• Deck 16 – infinity pool at the stern, outdoor spa (glass-walled sauna and cold room), Concierge Desk, Haven Outdoor Restaurant, Haven Lounge & Bar.
• Deck 17 – two outdoor whirlpools and showers.
• Deck 18 – infinity pool and a large sunbathing area with showers.

All Haven guests receive complimentary 24-hour butler service.

The wellness complex combines the Mandara Spa and the Pulse Fitness Center.

• The gym offers modern equipment, aerobics studio, performance recovery room, and Hyperice-integrated classes.
• The spa includes charcoal sauna, a two-story waterfall, Salt Room, Steam Room, Ice Room, Infrared and Finnish saunas, experiential showers, Vitality Pool, Flotation Salt Pool, 22 heated loungers, 20 treatment rooms, and changing rooms.

New spa services include computer-controlled acoustic/vibrational therapies (Gharieni Welnamis and Wellmassage5D beds), Ocean Spa Wave Massage, Zero Gravity Wellness Massage, and ELEMIS therapeutic wraps.

The Aqua Park spans three decks and features two swimming pools, five multi-level waterslides (Ocean Loop), two racing slides (The Rush), one freefall dry slide (The Drop), the “Tidal Wave” innertube waterslide (fleet first), four Jacuzzis, a poolside bar, and a sundeck.

Vibe Beach Club is an adults-only area with infinity hot tubs, a bar, sun loungers, and private cabanas (daily surcharge).

Syd Norman’s Pour House is a rock-and-roll-themed venue offering live band performances.

Headliners Comedy Club presents “The Second City”, “Howl at the Moon”, “The Improv at Sea”, and “Science of Comedy”.

The Aqua Theater & Club spans three decks and features a main stage, dance floor, moving LED screen, UHD media, and nightclub programming at night (Sensoria). Daytime programming includes enrichment lectures, bingo, trivia, and game shows.

• Exclusive to PRIMA ships is “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical”, a 75-minute show featuring 20+ hits.
• Sensoria Theatre also hosts NCL’s “LIVE on NCL” game shows, including “The Price Is Right”, “Supermarket Sweep”, “Press Your Luck”, and “Beat the Clock”.

NCL Luna’s interactive shows introduce a first-at-sea concept where the theater transforms into a nightclub during performances. Productions were developed with Fremantle. In 2023 NCL introduced “Beetlejuice The Musical” and “Press Your Luck LIVE”.

Unlike previous PRIMA ships, the Speedway go-kart track is replaced by the Aqua Slidecoaster — a hybrid water slide and roller coaster with magnetic propulsion.

Norwegian Luna also features “The Rush” (dueling dry slides) and “The Drop” (world’s first freefall dry slide).

The LUNA Game Zone (expanded Galaxy Pavilion) offers 14 attractions, including four new simulators and two Escape Rooms, along with:

• Topgolf Swing Suite (fleet’s first), offering virtual courses and multiplayer gaming.
• The Bull’s Eye interactive darts lounge (automated scoring, instant replays).

The ship also features “Tee Time” 9-hole mini-golfing.

NCL fleet-first/expanded venues and amenities

The LUNA Game Zone expands on the Galaxy Pavilion with VR attractions (Space Racing, Beat Hero) and retro arcade games (Pac-Man, Donkey Kong).

New features include Bull’s Eye Bar (interactive darts), a 12-hole two-deck Tee Time Mini-Golf Course (2.5x larger than on Prima/Viva), and a dedicated Pickleball Court.

The Mandara Spa & Salon is redesigned with a two-story waterfall, marble staircase, new wellness rooms, expanded Thermal Suite, and enlarged Pulse Fitness Center.

Penrose Bar and Waves Pool Bar are redesigned, while The Local Bar & Grill, Hasuki, and Cagney’s are expanded.

Itineraries

Norwegian Luna’s inaugural season begins with her Maiden Voyage on March 10, 2026 (rescheduled from April 4). The Transatlantic crossing from Civitavecchia-Rome to Miami visits Barcelona (overnight) and Gibraltar, followed by nine sea days.

The inaugural season is based in the Caribbean from PortMiami, beginning March 23. Seven-day roundtrip itineraries visit Dominicana, Tortola (BVI), St Thomas (USVI), Roatan (Honduras), Cozumel and Costa Maya (Mexico), as well as NCL’s private islands Harvest Caye (Belize) and Great Stirrup Cay (Bahamas).

In 2027 (April–October), the ship repositions to New York City for 5- and 7-day Bermuda cruises featuring 2- and 3-day overnight stays in King’s Wharf.

On February 16, 2017, the shipowner NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd) signed an order with Fincantieri for four NCL LEONARDO Class units (renamed “NCL PRIMA” in 2021) for the NCL brand.

• The vessels were scheduled for delivery from 2022 through 2025 (one ship per year), with an option to add two additional units. On July 12, 2018, NCLH exercised this option and ordered two PRIMA PLUS-series ships, currently scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028 (originally 2026 and 2027).
• The NCLH–Fincantieri agreement was backed by CDP (Cassa Depositi e Prestiti SpA, the Turin-based investment bank founded in 1850) and SACE SpA (Servizi Assicurativi del Commercio Estero, Italy’s Export Credit Agency founded in 1977).
• All shipbuilding contracts were signed by Frank Del Rio (NCLH President and CEO) and Giuseppe Bono (CEO of Fincantieri SpA).

For the seven PRIMA ships, NCL trademarked the names Aqua, Bella, Luna, Ombra, Prima, Vela, Viva, and Ultima (each prefixed with “Norwegian”).

The name “Norwegian Luna” was officially announced on September 18, 2024, by David J. Herrera (NCL President).

The ship’s namesakes include AIDAluna, the ferry Luna Seaways, and the riverboats Arosa Luna and Emerald Luna.

The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on March 14, 2025, at the Monfalcone shipyard.

Like all units in this series, Norwegian Luna is being built by Fincantieri at the Marghera Yard near Venice, Italy.

The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera yard/hull number 6301) has a powerplant consisting of five main Wärtsilä diesel engines — three model 8L46 (8-cylinder) and two model 12V46 (12-cylinder) — supported by one Caterpillar diesel generator (model 3516C HD) and six Alfa Laval auxiliary boilers (one oil/gas-fired and five exhaust-gas heated).

The diesel-electric propulsion system includes three bow thrusters (Brunvoll FU115) and two aft thrusters (ABB Azipod XO).

The registered shipowner is LEONARDO THREE LTD (a subsidiary of NCLH), while the ship manager is listed as NCL BAHAMAS LTD.
