Radiance Of The Seas Review

Review of Radiance Of The Seas

The 2001-built Radiance of the Seas cruise ship is the first Radiance-class Royal Caribbean liner, with sister ships Jewel OTS, Serenade OTS, and Brilliance OTS.

The vessel (IMO number 9195195) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311319000) and registered in Nassau.

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US-based passenger shipping company, trademarked travel brand, and subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). Founded in 1968, RCI currently accounts for over one-fifth of the global cruise market and operates RCG’s largest fleet by both vessel count and gross tonnage.

All RCI cruise ships have names ending with “of the Seas”.

Radiance Of The Seas cruise ship (Royal Caribbean)

When Royal Caribbean introduced its first-in-class Radiance cruise ship in 2001, guests were impressed by the abundance of natural light streaming through her glass-rich exterior. A decade later, RCI invested US$20 million to give the 2140-passenger vessel a refreshed identity.

During the 2011 refurbishment, Radiance OTS gained eight dining venues already featured on the larger Oasis OTS and Allure OTS, including a Japanese specialty restaurant and a Brazilian churrascaria. The upgrade also included stateroom enhancements throughout, bow-to-stern Wi-Fi coverage, and a large poolside LED screen. Additional improvements comprised a brand-new nursery for children aged 6 to 36 months (another Oasis-class feature), twelve new staterooms, interactive HDTV systems in all accommodations, and the installation of touchscreen “wayfinder” panels to help guests locate venues and activities onboard.

Decks and Cabins

Radiance Of The Seas staterooms (1061 total, in 32 categories) include 64 Suites, 513 Balcony, 241 Oceanview, and 243 Inside cabins (3 Single). Most cabins measure 165-190 ft2 (15-18 m2). Most balconies are sized 45 ft2 (4 m2). The smallest accommodation is the Studio Interior (110 ft2 / 10 m2), while the largest is the Royal Suite (1000 ft2 / 93 m2 plus a 105 ft2 / 10 m2 terrace). The ship has 15 wheelchair-accessible cabins.

The vessel has 13 decks, of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 8 contain cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The two-story Cascades is Radiance’s main dining room. It features oversized mirrors and column drapery, creating a light and airy atmosphere, and seats 1110 guests. Cascades also includes two private dining rooms: the 30-seat Tides (port side) and the 102-seat Breakers (starboard side). Breakfast is served on the lower level from 8:00 am to 10:00 am, offering a waiter-service menu with classic breakfast items such as omelets, bacon, sausages, French toast, pancakes, smoked salmon bagels, and a daily special.

The buffet area offers a limited selection of pre-prepared items. Lunch is served from noon to 1:30 pm and features the Brasserie 30 menu, designed for guests wishing to complete their meal within 30 minutes. The “Tutti” salad bar includes items ranging from tomatoes, lettuce, eggs, and grated carrots to prawns, tuna, meats, cheeses, and bread. Dinner menus offer nine appetizers, ten entrées, three soups, seven desserts, and classic selections. The menu also features the Chef’s Inspiration, highlighting the chef’s recommended starter, main course, and dessert of the day.

Itineraries

Radiance of the Seas’ itinerary program is centered on Alaskan cruises from Vancouver, BC, Canada during the summer season. For the remainder of the year, Radiance OTS operates in Australia from Sydney, NSW, as well as on transpacific crossings to Hawaii between Australia and Alaska (Sydney-Vancouver).

Following a two-year hiatus caused by the Coronavirus crisis, Radiance OTS was scheduled to resume operations on April 23, 2022, with a six-day repositioning cruise from Los Angeles to Vancouver, followed by a seven-day Alaskan program with voyages between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska.

In March 2022, RCI announced a change in the ship’s deployment for the 2022-2023 winter season (November through April), moving her from Australia (Sydney) to the Caribbean. Departures were scheduled from Port NOLA (New Orleans) and Galveston, Texas. The redeployment included a Panama Canal transition voyage from Los Angeles to New Orleans, starting on October 20, 2022.

  • 4- to 7-night Western Caribbean roundtrips from New Orleans visiting Mexico, Belize, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman
  • 7- to 10-night Western Caribbean roundtrips from Galveston beginning in Q1 2023 (itinerary details to be announced)

Radiance Of The Seas Wiki

Radiance is Royal Caribbean’s first Radiance-class liner, with sister ships Brilliance, Jewel, and Serenade. The ship was built in 2001 by Meyer Werft GmbH (Papenburg, Germany). The ship’s godmother was Margot L. Pritzker, wife of Thomas J. Pritzker (a member of RCCL’s Board of Directors). The naming ceremony took place on April 6, 2001. The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) departed from Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) on April 17, 2001. The 14-day Caribbean itinerary visited Aruba, the Panama Canal, ports in Costa Rica and the Mexican Riviera, Los Angeles, and ended in Seattle, Washington, from where the ship continued cruising to Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii.

The vessel’s gas turbine propulsion (a first for an RCCL ship) makes her more efficient at higher speeds and results in significantly lower harmful gas emissions compared to diesel-powered vessels.

One of the most distinctive onboard venues is the nautical-themed Schooner Bar, featuring blue carpeting and dark wood paneling. The pool area is African-themed, highlighted by three large plaster elephant sculptures and ambient animal and bird sound effects.

Radiance OTS refurbishments review

The ship’s most recent routine drydock (for regular maintenance, class work, technical overhauls, and minor hotel and cabin updates) was conducted in 2026 (February) at Freeport's Grand Bahama Shipyard.

Drydocks 2021-2024

The September 2021 drydock took place at Navantia Shipyard (Cadiz, Spain) and focused mainly on general technical and routine maintenance.

The March 2024 routine drydocking was at Grand Bahama Shipyard. It also included new carpeting and upholstery throughout all public areas.

Drydock 2016

The drydock refurbishment in 2016 was carried out in Portland (Oregon, USA).

The project included technical repairs such as steel replacement and propulsion/propeller maintenance.

All passenger cabins were updated.

The Vitality at Sea complex (ShipShape Spa on Deck 12) was redesigned, and the outdoor pool deck area on Deck 12 was refreshed.

Drydock 2012

During the June 2012 refurbishment, seven new dining venues were added: Samba Grill, Rita's Cantina, Giovanni's Table, Park Cafe, Izumi, Boardwalk Dog House, and Chef's Table (VIP dining).

The Babies & Tots Nursery was also introduced.

Drydock 2011

The list of deck plan changes following the 2011 drydock refurbishment included:

  • new complimentary dining venues (the deli-style restaurant “Park Cafe” and the hot dog bar “Dog House”)
  • new specialty dining venues available at an additional charge (“Giovanni’s Table” / Italian Trattoria, “Izumi” / Asian, “Samba Grill” / Brazilian, “Rita’s Cantina” / Mexican)
  • Jumbotron (large poolside movie screen)
  • Nursery and English pub
  • new lounges (“Diamond” and “Concierge”)

Onboard Radiance, two cruise dining packages are also offered: the “Chef’s” package (US$145 per person, including “Chops”, “Giovanni’s”, “Izumi”, “Samba”, and “Chef’s Table”, with wine included) and the “Radiance” package (US$75 per person, including “Chops”, “Giovanni’s”, “Izumi”, and “Samba”).

Ship Facts

The vessel is faster and offers improved maneuverability compared to cruise ships built before 2001. This is due to a modified propulsion system combining powerful bow thrusters, Azipods, and a dynamic GPS positioning system.

The ship was designed to operate in both warm and cool climates. She features extensive panoramic windows, numerous cabin balconies, a glass-walled atrium, and fully panoramic glass elevators offering sea views.

With Radiance, RCI’s signature Viking Crown Lounge was redesigned into an entertainment complex with multiple venues, including the Starquest disco nightclub (with a revolving bar) and Hollywood Odyssey (an intimate bar featuring Hollywood memorabilia and live entertainment by stand-up comedians and music ensembles). In subsequent years, these venues were renamed, interiors redesigned, and new spaces added, including the Concierge Club and Diamond Club.

The initials GTV (short for “gas turbine vessel”) can be seen on both sides of the ship’s stern and refer to her propulsion system. Radiance is the first RCI ship powered by gas-steam turbines. The new-generation power plant includes one steam turbine and two gas turbines (by General Electric) and is more fuel-efficient and cleaner, as gas turbines burn distillate fuel rather than heavy fuel oil. Electricity generated by the turbines powers the ship’s propulsion units (ABB Azipods), resulting in reduced exhaust emissions. The ship also features a rotating engine design that minimizes vibrations.

Radiance carries a USD 6 million onboard art collection, including paintings and sculptures. Among the highlights is the Centrum’s five-deck-high atrium wire-suspended sculpture composed of radiating spokes.

When the vessel debuted in 2001, a unique onboard venue was the “Books & Coffee” shop (located forward-starboard on Deck 5, adjacent to the Photo Gallery & Shop). The space combined a library, bookstore, coffee bar, and Internet cafe with four PC stations. Today, this area is occupied by the Focus Art Gallery.

The Bombay Billiard Club features two self-leveling (gyroscopic) pool tables. The motorized gyroscopes counteract the ship’s movements and keep the tables level. Each gyroscopic pool table costs approximately USD 90,000.
