Carnival Magic

The 2011-built Carnival Magic cruise ship is one of the largest in the fleet and Carnival’s second DREAM-class liner, alongside Breeze, Dream, and Costa Diadema. Carnival Magic was last refurbished in February 2021.

The vessel (IMO number 9378486) is currently Panama-flagged (MMSI 370491000) and registered in Colon.

History - Construction and Ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US-based shipping company, a trademarked brand, and a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (the shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924–1999), co-founder of NCL Norwegian.

CCL has the Corporation’s largest fleet by number of vessels and GT-tonnage (volume and passenger capacity). As of 2023, CCL held ~9% of the global cruise market by revenue and ~19% by passenger volume. In 2024, Carnival Corporation accounted for ~51% of the US$64+ billion cruise industry.

The 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic was built in 2011 at a cost of USD 740 million. While the ship maintains familiar design elements from previous generations, it also introduces several new features. Carnival Magic marks the final ship interior created by longtime architect Joe Farcus, whose design influence is more subdued here due to the involvement of other designers. As a result, areas such as the main dining rooms, sun deck, and Serenity adults-only retreat benefit from more refined lighting and ambiance.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Magic staterooms (1,845 total) include 54 Suites, 877 Balcony, 227 Oceanview, and 713 Inside cabins, across 34 different grades. Most cabins measure between 170–185 ft² (16–17 m²), and balconies typically range from 35–45 ft² (3–4 m²). Deluxe Oceanviews feature two separate bathrooms and are marketed as "Family Cabins," with a maximum capacity of 5 guests. Cove Balcony cabins on Deck 2 (located below the lifeboats) feature partially enclosed verandas.

The ship also offers 368 connecting ("Family") cabins, 79 Cloud 9 Spa staterooms, 35 wheelchair-accessible cabins, and Cove Balcony rooms. The largest accommodations are the Grand Suites (345 ft² / 32 m² with an 85 ft² / 8 m² terrace), accommodating up to 4 guests.

The vessel has 14 decks, 9 of which are dedicated to cabins.

Shipboard Dining Options – Food and Drinks

The two main dining venues aboard Carnival Magic are the Southern Lights and Northern Lights restaurants. These serve as the central dining spaces for the ship. For a mix of food and humor, the Punchliner Comedy Brunch takes place in the Spotlight Lounge on sea days. Food enthusiasts may enjoy the Chef’s Table experience—priced at $75 per person—which includes a galley tour, a multi-course meal, and the opportunity to observe the chefs at work.

• Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina – fast food and Mexican eateries
• BlueIguana Tequila Bar – Mexican-themed outdoor bar for frozen drinks and beers

Shipboard Entertainment Options – Fun and Sport

Many of Carnival Magic’s features were carried over from the first-in-class Carnival Dream, including the Seaside Theatre, a two-deck Cloud 9 Spa, and the WaterWorks aqua park (Magic has two waterslides versus Dream’s one). However, Magic also debuted new amenities, such as Cucina del Capitano with singing waiters and handmade pasta (surcharge $10), Cherry on Top candy shop, and the cruise industry's first water "dump bucket" complementing the waterslides.

In April 2024, the Showtime Theatre was upgraded with new ROBE moving lights (30x PAINTE, 30x LEDBeam 350, and 12x miniPointe models).

Itineraries

The ship is currently homeported in Miami, operating 8-day Southern Caribbean and 6-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries.

In 2022, Carnival Magic’s itinerary program was based on homeporting in Port Canaveral-Orlando, Florida.

In the 2023 summer, from Norfokl VA, the ship marked CCL’s longest deployment in Virginia (May 14–October 22) since 2002. The previously scheduled NYC program (to Bermuda) was canceled in November 2022.

Ex-Norfolk itineraries (roundtrips from Nauticus Half Moone Cruise Center) included:

• 6-night Bahamas cruises to Bimini Island, Nassau, and Freeport
• 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruises to Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, and Amber Cove (Dominicana)
• 6-night Bermuda cruises to King’s Wharf
• 8-night Canada & New England cruises to Portland ME, St. John NB, Halifax NS, and Sydney NS

Caribbean voyages typically include 4 sea days (2 southbound and 2 northbound).

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Carnival Magic was homeported in Galveston, Texas, operating 7-day roundtrips to the Bahamas and Eastern and Western Caribbean ports (Key West Florida, Jamaica, Nassau, Belize, Mexico's Progreso, Cozumel, and Costa Maya, Isla Roatan, and Grand Cayman).

The ship's Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade was completed in 2015. Carnival Magic is the second of the company's Dream-class vessels (built by Fincantieri Monfalcone), with sister ships Breeze and Dream, as well as Costa Diadema. The vessel was christened by Lindsey Wilkerson, an employee of the New York City-based ALSAC fundraising organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Due to scheduled drydock refurbishment projects, in September 2020 Carnival Cruise Line canceled all planned 2020 and 2021-Q1 itineraries for four ships:

• Carnival Magic itineraries (15 total) from Miami, Florida were canceled from November 7, 2020, through March 13, 2021 (first departure).
• Carnival Paradise itineraries from Tampa, Florida were canceled from November 2, 2020, through March 19, 2021 (first departure).
• Carnival Valor itineraries from New Orleans were canceled from November 2, 2020, through April 29, 2021 (first departure), including two Transatlantic crossings—from New Orleans (January 25) and from Barcelona (February 26).
• Carnival Spirit itineraries from Brisbane, Australia were canceled from December 6, 2020, through May 16, 2021 (first departure on June 12, a repositioning cruise from Singapore to Brisbane).

Carnival Magic Refurbishments Review

Drydock 2026

The ship’s drydocking in 2026 (April 18 through May 25) was at Freeport's Grand Bahama Shipyard, and was rescheduled from the originally planned 2025 (October 6 to November 20) project.

Besides the scheduled general maintenance works and machinery overhauls, the project also featured CCL's new bow crest, "From Sea to Shining Sea". Rolled out on the USA-based fleet (introduced on Carnival Legend), it symbolizes CCL's identity as "America's Cruise Line", celebrating the USA's diverse coastlines, oceans, and communities. The Phrase "From Sea to Shining Sea" is inspired by the song "America the Beautiful". The "Whale Tail" design features CCL's funnel-shaped "whale tail" logo. The new bow crest was unveiled ahead of the USA's 250th anniversary.

Among the principal upgrades and renovations to public areas and guest facilities were the expansion of thegaming complex (Casino and Arcade), the redesign of the Lido restaurant (improving passenger circulation and dining efficiency), refurbishments within the WaterWorks park and surrounding pool decks, the installation of a new Mini-Golf Course (Deck 12) and the modernization of the wellness complex Cloud 9 Spa & Fitness Center (Deck 12, including new exercise equipment).

The Fun Shops (retail complex on Deck 5), including the Effy Jewelry Boutique, were likewise refreshed.

Drydock 2021

From April 24 to May 24, 2021, Carnival Magic was drydocked at Chantier Naval de Marseille (CNdM Shipyard in Marseille, France) for general maintenance.

Notably, Magic became Carnival’s first ship to receive the new trademarked hull livery (red-white-blue), replacing the traditional white hull with a red stripe, as introduced on Mardi Gras.

During the drydock, the ship’s casino was expanded with more slot machines and gaming options, and both the WaterWorks aquapark and Lido Deck swimming pools were refreshed.

In April 2024, the Showtime Theatre was upgraded with new ROBE moving lights (30x PAINTE, 30x LEDBeam 350, 12x miniPointe models). The lighting redesign was led by David Horner and installed while the ship remained in operation and carrying passengers.

Refurbishment 2016

The following deck plan changes were made during the 2016 drydock refurbishment (February 21 to March 5):

On Promenade Deck (5th floor), the Alchemy Bar (a cocktail pharmacy with resident mixologists) was added. The Lanai Oceanside Barbeque was replaced by the open-air, fast-food venue “Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse.” This complimentary BBQ bar was developed in partnership with Guy Fieri, who also runs the “Guy’s Burger Joint” on Lido Deck.

On Lido Deck (10th floor), two new complimentary poolside eateries were added: Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina (Mexican eatery). Other new venues on this deck include BlueIguana Tequila Bar (Mexican-themed bar for frozen drinks and beers) and Pizzeria del Capitano (complimentary).

Also on Lido Deck 10, the RedFrog Rum Bar was introduced, serving frozen drinks, beers, and Carnival’s private label ThirstyFrog Red draft beer.

Technical enhancements included the addition of shoreside power capabilities and new hull coating.

In Q1 of 2021 (February–April), Carnival Magic was also drydocked at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas, primarily for general maintenance work.
