Silver Spirit Review

Review of Silver Spirit

The 2009-built MS Silver Spirit cruise ship is the largest vessel in the Silversea fleet, with a design similar to the newest fleetmates Silver Muse (2017) and Silver Moon (2020).

The vessel (IMO number 9437866) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311022500) and registered in Nassau.

History - construction and ownership

Silversea Cruises is a Monaco-based privately owned cruise company and a top luxury travel brand. It was established in 1994 as a joint venture between V-Ships Monaco (fka Vlasov Group) and the Lefebvre family of Rome Italy. In 2018, RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd acquired two-thirds of the company. Silversea now operates a fleet of smaller boutique cruise vessels with passenger capacity ranging between 100 and 700 guests. The company’s business model focuses on yacht-like vessels in the industry’s ultra-luxury all-suite category. Silversea’s all-inclusive fares include beverages (including selected wines), gratuities (tipping is not expected), travel insurance, port charges, and one or more shore excursions per voyage.

Silver Spirit cruise ship (Silversea)

The 600-passenger Silver Spirit is an all-suite luxury liner and became the largest ship in the Silversea fleet when she entered service as the company’s sixth vessel in 2009. Spirit is considerably larger than the other ships in the fleet. The vessel’s original (before the 2018 lengthening) space-per-guest ratio (6,700 ft3 per passenger) was among the best in the luxury cruise industry. The ship often attracts a slightly younger clientele, including families traveling with teenagers.

At the end of September 2017, Silversea announced plans for the company’s first-ever ship lengthening project.

MS Silver Spirit cruise ship lengthening

MS Silver Spirit was lengthened in 2018 by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri at the Palermo shipyard (Sicily, Italy). During drydock 2018 (March 5–May 1), the vessel was extended by inserting a prebuilt midsection (15 m / 49 ft long). This made Silver Spirit the world’s first stretched luxury cruise ship. The new section (hull and superstructure) added a total of 34 new cabins. During the drydock refit, the ship was also extensively refurbished and upgraded.

The vessel’s GT tonnage (volume) increased from 36,009 to 39,519 tons. Crew capacity rose from 376 to 412, while passenger capacity increased from 540 to 608 (12%). Dining capacity grew by 15%, and outdoor seating capacity by 20%. The refit project cost approximately USD 70 million and involved more than 500 workers, around 450,000 man-hours, 846 tons of steel, 360,892 ft (110 km) of new cables, and 26,247 ft (8 km) of new pipes.

Decks and Cabins

Silver Spirit staterooms (270 total) are all suite-category accommodations (11 cabin grades, including 4 wheelchair-accessible units). All suites are outside-facing, among the largest in the fleet, and 95% feature private step-out balconies. Cabin sizes range from 300 ft2 (28 m2) to 1,480 ft2 (138 m2). Each suite includes a walk-in closet, electronic safe (located in the closet), chest of drawers, spa bathrobes, and slippers.

The ship has 12 decks, of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 8 contain cabins.

All cabins are fully wireless and equipped with iPod stations, hairdryers, alarm clocks, binoculars, and umbrellas (available for use during the voyage). Additional amenities in top-grade suites include two hours of complimentary worldwide satellite phone usage, in-cabin dining with afternoon canapés, and dinner at the Officers’ Table. Each suite is attended by both a junior attendant and a dedicated butler.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Silver Spirit features six distinct restaurants. The menu selections are not only creative but also elegantly presented. Signature dining experiences include The Grill’s hot-rock cooking concept and La Terrazza’s robust evening menu. As with other Silversea ships, gratuities are included in the cruise fare and no additional tipping is expected.

Silver Spirit ship related cruise news

Silver Spirit Wiki

The Italy-built Silver Spirit was delivered by Fincantieri's shipyard in Ancona on December 12, 2009. Her maiden voyage began on December 23 (an 11-day itinerary from Barcelona to Lisbon), followed by a Transatlantic crossing to the Caribbean. The ship later docked at Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA) for the christening ceremony on January 21.

The ship’s architect is Giacomo Mortola. Her Godmother is Silvia Lefebvre, sister of Silversea’s chairman Manfredi Lefebvre. The naming ceremony took place at Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) on January 21, 2010. During the event, Silvia Lefebvre smashed a Salmanazar (9-liter bottle) of Moet & Chandon champagne against the hull.

After the naming ceremony (on the same day, January 21), Silver Spirit departed on a 91-day World Cruise (“The Spirit of South America”), visiting 45 ports and islands.

Silversea's Spirit has one of the highest space-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry, with a score of 67. This equates to approximately 6,700 cubic feet of space per passenger. The vessel’s guest-to-crew ratio is 1.4, slightly higher than other Silversea ships, which typically average around 1.3. All officers and crew members are European-trained.

In 2017, Silver Spirit was replaced as the fleet’s flagship by the new Silver Muse.

In 2021 (July–August), the ship entered drydock at Chantier Naval de Marseille (Marseille) for routine maintenance and hull repainting.

Silver Spirit refurbishments review

Drydock 2026

The ship's last drydocking was in 2026 (March-May) conducted at Fincantieri's Palermo yard.

The project resulted in major enhancements - new dining venues, redesigned public areas, and new and upgraded staterooms.

The project was similar to Silver Muse's refurbishment in 2025 (November-December).

Silver Spirit's new features include the S.A.L.T. (Silversea's signature culinary program based on itinerary-/region-inspired dishes and beverages, and cooking classes), revitalization (draperies, carpets, upholstery, furniture) of public areas and venues (Venetian Lounge, hallways, pool deck), and the introduction of a new cabin category (Medallion Suites).

Drydock 2018

At the end of September 2017, Silversea announced plans for the company’s first-ever ship lengthening project. During drydock 2018 (March 5–May 3, carried out by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri at the Palermo shipyard in Sicily), MS Silver Spirit was lengthened by inserting a prebuilt midsection (15 m / 49 ft long). This made Silver Spirit the world’s first stretched luxury cruise ship. The new section (hull and superstructure) added a total of 34 new cabins (6 Silver Suites, 26 Veranda Suites, and 2 Panorama Suites).

During the drydock refit, the ship was also extensively refurbished and updated. The project’s purpose was to enhance onboard amenities and redesign public areas to resemble Silversea’s newer vessels, including Silver Muse and Silver Moon.

MS Silver Spirit cruise ship lengthening

Despite the increase in overall size, the vessel retained an intimate atmosphere with a crew-to-passenger ratio of approximately 1:1.5.

Following the refit, several new dining venues were added. All existing staterooms and venues were fully renovated. The pool deck was redesigned, and a new Health & Fitness Center was created. New restaurants introduced during the upgrade included Indochine (replacing Le Champagne), Atlantide (replacing the main dining room), Silver Note (a supper club with live music), and Spaccanapoli (an outdoor dinner restaurant that also serves as a daytime bar offering fast food and drinks). All menus were also upgraded.

Arts Cafe (a multipurpose venue offering live performances, gourmet coffees, and teas) and Silver Note (a themed dinner venue with live music and a dance floor) were added aft on Deck 8.

The Casino Lounge was relocated from Deck 8 to Deck 7, and its former location was converted into Silver Note. Dolce Vita (Deck 5 Atrium Bar) was introduced as a new cocktail lounge featuring live grand piano performances. The former "Spa at Silversea" (Deck 6) was upgraded and renamed Zagara Spa. The Library (Deck 7) was transformed into the Casino, and a new venue called "Tor's Observation Library" was created.

All top-tier suites received new handcrafted toppers, handmade Savoir mattresses, and smart HDTVs. A new suite category (Balsorano Suite) was introduced, decorated with items of personal significance to Silversea Cruises Chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio.

The vessel’s gross tonnage increased from 36,009 to 39,519 GT. Crew capacity increased from 376 to 412, while passenger capacity rose from 540 to 608 (12%). Dining capacity increased by 15%, and outdoor seating by 20%.

The refit project cost USD 70 million and involved more than 500 workers, approximately 450,000 man-hours, 846 tons of steel, 360,892 ft (110 km) of new cables, and 26,247 ft (8 km) of new pipes.
