Crystal Serenity Review

Review of Crystal Serenity

The 2003-built Crystal Serenity cruise ship is the larger of the two Crystal Cruises ocean ships, alongside fleetmate Crystal Symphony (1995).

The vessel (IMO number 9243667) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311536000) and registered in Nassau.

Following extensive drydock refurbishments in 2023, under the relaunched Crystal Cruises brand (by A&K), Crystal Serenity was scheduled to resume operations on July 31st (from Marseille Fos Port), while Crystal Symphony was scheduled to restart on September 1st (from Piraeus-Athens).

Crystal Serenity began a Preview Voyage on July 21st, 2023, from Trieste (Italy), carrying VIP guests only. The itinerary included calls at Kotor, Montenegro (Jul 22), Venice (Jul 24-25/overnight), Naples (Jul 28), and Livorno (Jul 29).

History - Construction and Ownership

Crystal Cruises was founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of the Japanese NYK Line (Nippon Yusen Kaisha), one of the world's largest container shipping companies. In 2015, NYK Line sold Crystal Cruises to Genting Hong Kong (GHK), after which the company was renamed Crystal Ltd. In January 2022, GHK filed for bankruptcy and its assets were put up for sale. In June 2022, the Crystal Cruises brand was acquired by A&K Travel Group Ltd (Abercrombie & Kent).

Crystal Serenity cruise ship

Following the bankruptcy of parent company GHK in January 2022, its subsidiary Crystal Cruises Inc (USA) declared bankruptcy in February.

In June 2022, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony were auctioned in The Bahamas. Both ships, under arrest in Freeport since February 5th, were sold via sealed tender auction, with bids submitted to The Bahamas' Supreme Court and a 10% deposit.

On June 15th, Bahamian sources confirmed both vessels were sold—Serenity to CSE Ltd for USD 103 million (EUR 99M / GBP 84.6M), and Symphony to CSY Ltd for USD 25 million (EUR 24M / GBP 20.5M). The transaction was managed by the Bahamian law firm Alexiou Knowles & Co. Reportedly, both shipowning companies (CSE and CSY) are owned by Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio de Clunieres di Balsorano (1953-born billionaire, co-owner of Silversea, Chairman of Heritage Group, and Co-Chairman of A&K).

On June 22nd, it was announced that both ships are now owned by A&K Travel Group Ltd—a joint venture between Abercrombie & Kent Ltd (owned by Geoffrey Kent) and Heritage Group Monaco (Lefebvre family-owned private equity firm specializing in luxury travel, VIP tourism, and medical technologies). After undergoing extensive drydock refurbishments, both ships resumed operations in 2023 under the fully acquired Crystal Cruises brand. Ship management is handled by Monaco-based V.Ships Leisure Ltd (part of V.Group Holdings Ltd).

Crystal Serenity and Symphony departed Freeport on July 6th, heading to Europe. They arrived in Trieste on July 24th for drydocking at the Fincantieri shipyard. The project included installing shore power connectivity to enable the ships to use port electricity for hotel operations while docked.

Crystal Serenity's Maiden Voyage (a 14-day Baltic Sea itinerary) departed on July 7, 2003, from Southampton (England). Its first World Cruise began on January 14, 2004 (a 106-day itinerary from Los Angeles to New York City).

Crystal Serenity followed Crystal Harmony (1990-built, now NYK Asuka 2) and preceded Crystal Symphony (1995-built). Designed in response to high demand, she features twice as many Penthouses as her sister ship. The vessel also includes two paddle tennis courts (instead of one), catering to highly competitive enthusiasts of the sport.

Crystal Serenity is a spacious ship with a calm and elegant atmosphere. Interior colors are soothing, with muted tones of gold, green, blue, gray, and red. Stateroom furniture and wood accents are in darker tones, complemented by colorful bedding, curtains, upholstery, and wall coverings. The interiors were designed by firms including Tillberg (Sweden), Garroni (Italy), Okada (Japan), Nix Firestone (USA), BBGM (USA), Stephen John (UK), and II By IV (Canada).

Decks and Cabins

Of all Crystal Serenity staterooms (347 total), most are Veranda Suites—Sapphire (151, 430 ft² / 40 m² with 110 ft² / 10 m² balconies) and Aquamarine (86, 320 ft² / 30 m² with 85 ft² / 8 m² balconies). The smaller Balcony cabins (Double Guest Room with Veranda) number 46, each measuring 215 ft² / 20 m² (balcony 55 ft² / 5 m²).

After the 2023 refit, Serenity includes 14 Single cabins (out of 54 total Oceanview staterooms), bookable without single supplements. Also new are 6 Junior Crystal Penthouse Suites (645 ft² / 60 m², terrace 160 ft² / 15 m²). The largest accommodations are 4 Crystal Penthouse Suites (1260 ft² / 117 m², terrace 110 ft² / 10 m²).

The vessel has 13 decks, of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 5 house cabins.

Before 2023, standard Balcony cabins (65% of all accommodations) measured 225 ft² / 21 m². The ship previously featured 623 staterooms (including 108 Suites and 356 Balcony cabins) across 13 categories, with 10 wheelchair-accessible cabins. The older Crystal Penthouse Suites measured 1080 ft² / 100 m² with 270 ft² / 25 m² terraces.

During the 2018 drydock, Serenity added 36 Seabreeze Penthouses and 2 Seabreeze Penthouse Suites, reducing passenger capacity from 1070 to 980.

Crystal Dining Room (aft) features a gourmet menu with regionally inspired and traditional dishes. It offers a "Dining by Reservation" option, allowing guests to reserve tables each night at different times by contacting the Maitre D'. The renovation also increased seating capacity and added more tables for 2 and 4 guests, with updated decor.

The Vintage Room (10-seat fine dining venue with sommelier service) carries a surcharge of US$200. On select voyages, it operates as the "Ultimate Vintage Dining Room," serving some of the world’s rarest wines. Cover charges can soar up to US$1000 or more. The venue is dinner-only and features gourmet food and wine pairings.

The Sushi Bar is a Japanese specialty dinner restaurant (reservations only).

Osteria D'Ovidio is an Italian specialty restaurant (dinner only, reservations required) offering authentic Italian cuisine as well as original creations by Crystal Cruises' chefs.

Itineraries

Crystal Serenity's itinerary program includes a World Cruise (departing from Miami or San Francisco), Caribbean voyages, Mediterranean cruises, and Canada–New England fall foliage sailings from Quebec City and New York City.

Crystal Serenity also operates the legendary Northwest Passage Cruises.

Following the COVID-19 suspension of operations, Crystal Ocean resumed cruises with Crystal Serenity. The previously planned Europe-UK program was canceled, and a new Caribbean schedule (July 3–October 17, 2021) was introduced. The 7-night "Luxury Bahamas Escapes" were roundtrips from Nassau and North Bimini Island (Bailey Town), calling at Harbour Island, Great Exuma Island (Georgetown), San Salvador Island, and Long Island. In August, Miami was added as both a call port and homeport. The expanded itinerary debuted August 7 (from Nassau) and August 9 (from Miami), offering three embarkation points—Nassau (Saturdays), North Bimini (Sundays), and Miami (Mondays).

Crystal Serenity Wiki

The vessel (STX France Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard/hull number H32) has a volume of 68,870 GT, a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 10,810 tons, and a maximum draught of 7.6 m. The powerplant consists of 6x Wärtsilä marine diesel engines (model 12V38B) with a combined output of 52.2 MW (70,000 hp). Propulsion is diesel-electric, using 2x Rolls-Royce Mermaid podded propulsors/thrusters with a combined output of 27 MW (36,210 hp). The registered shipowner is CRYSTAL SERENITY LTD, and the registered manager is CRYSTAL CRUISES LLC (previously owned by SERENITY HOLDINGS LTD until 2023).

Physical construction began on June 13, 2002, with the keel laying ceremony at Chantiers de l'Atlantique (St Nazaire, France). The ship was launched from drydock on August 10, 2002, completed and delivered on June 30, 2003, and christened on July 3, 2003, in Southampton, England by godmother Julie Andrews (UK actress-singer, born 1935 as Julia Elizabeth Wells). The Inaugural Cruise began on July 7th—a 14-day roundtrip itinerary from Southampton to Northern European/Baltic ports.

On January 14, 2004, Crystal Serenity embarked on her first Around The World Voyage, sailing roundtrip from the USA (Los Angeles). The 106-day itinerary (January 14 to May 5) ended in NYC.

In summer 2016, Crystal Serenity became the world’s third cruise ship to complete a Northwest Passage Cruise—following the 2013 transits by Ponant's superyachts Le Soleal and Le Boreal. The 32-day itinerary (August 16 to September 16) sailed from Seward, Alaska to New York City, calling at Kodiak Island (Aug 17), Dutch Harbor (Aug 19), Nome (Aug 21), Victoria Island, Nunavut (Aug 27, 29), Baffin Island, Nunavut (Sept 4), Ilulissat (Sept 7), Sisimiut (Sept 8), Nuuk (Sept 9), Bar Harbor (Sept 13), Boston (Sept 14), and Newport (Sept 15).

The second Northwest Passage voyage (2017) followed the same 32-day itinerary (August 15 to September 15), also from Seward to NYC, with identical call ports. Fares started at approximately USD 22,000 per person (double occupancy).

During the 2017 Northwest Passage voyage, Crystal Serenity sailed 500 mi north of the Arctic Circle through the Arctic Ocean, escorted by the icebreaker Ernest Shackleton. The support vessel carried two helicopters (for emergencies), equipment for oil spill containment, advanced communications systems, and emergency supplies. Crystal Serenity was upgraded with an ice detection radar, ice navigation system, and forward-looking sonar. Bridge officers received ice navigation training, and ice pilots joined both ships for the passage. The Shackleton’s crew also supported Crystal Cruises’ “Unexpected Adventures” excursions—offering helicopter flightseeing, Zodiac landings, speedboat rides, and kayaking.

Crystal Serenity Drydock Refurbishment 2023 Review

In 2023, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony were fully refurbished at Fincantieri's shipyard in Trieste. The US$150 million refit was undertaken by Crystal Cruises' new owner Abercrombie & Kent (A&K Travel Group).

The refurbishments included stateroom reduction, larger suite designs, new cabin categories, reduced passenger capacity, and redesigned public areas. On Crystal Serenity, the number of cabins was reduced from 525 to 347, raising the passenger-per-space ratio from 54 to 62. Capacity changed from 980-1254 max to 740-794 max.

Both ships received two new cabin categories: "Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite" and "Single Guest Room with Ocean View" (bookable without single supplements).

Crystal Serenity’s Prego Restaurant was redesigned and renamed Osteria D'Ovidio, offering traditional Italian cuisine. A new wellness complex, Crystal Spa Aurora, was added, featuring treatments such as Aurora LED, Cryo Facial Experience, and Biotec 2.0 Ultimate Facial.

All staterooms were redesigned and enlarged, with updated categories: 40x Deluxe Oceanview became Double Guest Room with Oceanview; 298x Deluxe Balcony became 46x Double Guest Room with Veranda; 36x Seabreeze Penthouse became 86x Aquamarine Veranda Suite; 2x Seabreeze Penthouse Suite became 151x Sapphire Veranda Suite; 33x Penthouse Suite became 6x Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite; 72x Penthouses were reconfigured; and 14x Single Guest Rooms with Ocean View were created forward on Deck 7.

A&K reported that replacing engines and machinery on both ships cost over US$50 million, necessary due to poor maintenance and aging systems.

Crystal Serenity Refurbishments Review (2013–2020)

The 2020 drydock (April 13–23, in Singapore) was a USD 10 million project for technical maintenance and minor upgrades to staterooms and public areas (new carpets, furniture, repairs).

The 2018 drydock (October 18–November 6, at Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven) focused on enabling single-seating dining and reducing capacity. Free Wi-Fi was introduced fleetwide.

  • On Deck 9, 12x Seabreeze Penthouse Suites and 28x Seabreeze Penthouses were added. These shared the dimensions of existing suites and included connecting entryways.
  • All Penthouses received enhanced all-inclusive amenities, including butler service, in-room dining, and complimentary specialty dining.
  • Passenger capacity was reduced from 1254 to 980, improving the guest-to-space ratio to 70.3.
  • Stardust Club (Deck 6) was refurbished with new lighting, upholstery, and seating.
  • The Crystal Dining Room (Deck 7) was renamed "Waterside," and upgraded with marble flooring, new chandeliers, and more 2- and 4-seat tables. Open-seating dining (6–9:30 pm) replaced assigned dining. Breakfast and lunch services were unchanged.
  • Lido Café became Marketplace (day) and Churrascaria (night), offering buffet breakfast/lunch and Brazilian-themed dinners with meats served by gauchos on skewers.
  • Tastes restaurant (Deck 12) was redesigned with an Asian-themed interior and renamed "Silk Kitchen and Bar," offering modern Chinese cuisine all day, with open-seating dinners (reservations recommended).
  • Trident Bar and Grill continued serving casual grilled fare (e.g., burgers, sandwiches).
  • Silk Road and The Sushi Bar were renamed "Umi Uma," offering Nobu-inspired cuisine prepared by Nobu-trained chefs.
  • "Umi Uma" and "Prego" are complimentary for Penthouse guests; other guests receive one free reservation per voyage, with surcharges for extras.
  • The "Computer University at Sea" was updated and redesigned.

Free shipwide Wi-Fi followed upgrades to hardware and software, doubling satellite Internet speed. The new “Crystal Connect” app provides access to menus, news, events, excursions, itineraries, digital media, and more.

All cabins were fitted with 42-inch smart TVs featuring infotainment panels. The Palm Court observation lounge (Deck 12) was redesigned with intimate seating, a relocated stage, and a new Afternoon Tea area with fresh teas and pastries. The bar was also renovated.

The 2018 refurbishment involved Lloyd Werft workers and several hundred crew and subcontractors. Project supervision was by Almaco Group (est. 1998).

In May 2016, all Penthouse Suites were overhauled. The Lido Deck’s Trident Grill, Lido Café, and Tastes restaurant were also renovated. The drydock at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz, Spain included general maintenance.

The 2013 drydock introduced the following changes:

  • General maintenance, including propulsion upgrades (left-side Rolls-Royce Azimuth thruster), new hull coating, air duct cleaning, and reverse osmosis plant inspection.
  • Introduction of the “Deluxe PURE” category (hypoallergenic staterooms).
  • Redesign of the Tastes buffet and Lido area (Deck 12).
  • Installation of new LED lighting in public spaces.

The total cost of the 2013 refurbishment was USD 17 million.

World Cruise 2024 (Canceled)

In mid-September 2021, Crystal Serenity's 105-night "World Cruise 2024" (January 5 through April 20) was announced, scheduled to depart from PortMiami and conclude in Civitavecchia-Rome.

Crystal's 27th World Cruise, themed "Celebrated Cultures & Treasured Temples," included visits to 49 ports in 22 countries, with 14 overnight stays and access to 45 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Featured regions included the Caribbean, Panama Canal, South Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand, Southeast Asia (Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka), the Arabian Peninsula and Red Sea, the Suez Canal, and Mediterranean Europe (including Crete, Cyprus, and Sicily).

Bookings for the canceled "World Cruise 2024" opened exclusively between September 21-30, 2021, followed by general sales starting October 1. Early bookings received 2-for-1 fares and Book Now Savings of up to USD 17,250 per person (based on double occupancy).

The Grand Voyage was also offered in shorter segments, including an 89-night itinerary (Los Angeles to Rome) and seven smaller segments ranging from 13 to 18 nights in duration.

World Cruise 2022 (Canceled)

In September 2021, Crystal announced Serenity's "2022 Grand Voyage"—a 132-night "Caribbean Idylls and Mediterranean Masterpieces" itinerary departing from PortMiami on January 17 and ending in Los Angeles on May 29.

The Grand Voyage was offered as three full-length itinerary options (102-night, 117-day, and 132-night), along with 11 shorter segments ranging from 9 to 16 nights.

The 132-night/133-day itinerary featured 82 ports and destinations (including 45 islands) across 32 countries, with 19 Caribbean and 6 Canary Islands destinations, 11 overnight stays in major cities, and two Transatlantic crossings.

Visited islands included locations in the Caribbean (19 total), Spain's Canary Islands (6), Portugal's Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde, as well as Mediterranean islands such as France's Corsica, Spain's Balearic Islands, Italy's Sicily and Sardinia, Malta, Cyprus, Crete, and the Greek Isles, along with Bermuda.

However, on January 19, 2022, the voyage was canceled and all passengers were disembarked in Aruba after GHK-owned MV Werften filed for insolvency and bankruptcy protection. The next table shows the originally planned 116-day "World Voyage 2022" itinerary with scheduled call ports and times.
