Carnival Jubilee Review

Review of Carnival Jubilee

The 2023-built Carnival Jubilee cruise ship is CCL fleet's newest and largest liner (fleet's 26th vessel) and the third unit of the XL-Class (aka EXCELLENCE), inaugurated in December 2023. Carnival's XL ships are built by the German shipbuilder Meyer Werft at the Papenburg shipyard.

Jubilee is the first Carnival ship constructed in Germany. Like all other "Fun Ships", her owner is Carnival Corporation—the world's largest passenger shipping company.

The vessel (IMO number 9851737) is currently Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311001390) and registered in Nassau. Previously, she was Panama-flagged (MMSI 352002723) and registered in Colon.

The XL-Class design is similar to the Excellence/Helios-Class ships built by Meyer Werft for Carnival Corporation's brands Costa and AIDA.

Other Excellence-Class sisterships of Carnival Jubilee are Carnival Mardi Gras (2021), Carnival Celebration (2022), Carnival Festivale (2027), and Carnival Tropicale (2028).

new Carnival Jubilee cruise ship

The Carnival XL-Class features a new hull livery (red, white, navy blue), designed by NYC-based Bluarch Architecture. Among the world's largest passenger ships, Jubilee is 1130 ft (344 m) long and has a passenger capacity of 5,200 (lower berths), boasting cutting-edge maritime technology and multiple fleet- and industry-first innovations.

Like her CCL sisterships, Jubilee features the industry's first roller coaster at sea. The "BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster" is built by Maurer Rides (Munich, Germany-based). The 244 m (800 ft) electric race track features twists, turns, and speeds of up to 64 kph (40 mph). Riders travel in motorbike-style vehicles 57 m (187 ft) above sea level, enjoying 360-degree views and a final high-speed turn around the ship’s funnel.

On January 25, 2019, Carnival announced that its XL-class ships would feature six themed zones (neighborhoods).

Mardi Gras’ neighborhoods: Grand Central, French Quarter, Lido-Pool, La Piazza, Summer Landing, The Ultimate Playground.

Jubilee’s neighborhoods: Grand Central, Currents, Lido-Pool, The Shores, Summer Landing, The Ultimate Playground.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Jubilee staterooms include 2,626 passenger cabins across 22 categories, including duplex suites and 80 wheelchair-accessible cabins. All bathrooms feature the fleet’s first glass-door showers and in-shower shaving bars. Over 70% of staterooms are oceanview, and 300 cabin pairs are interconnecting/family-friendly.

The ship has 18 decks, with 15 accessible to passengers and 11 housing accommodations.

Cabin balconies are accessed via floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. Each lounge area features new-style sofabeds (with storage footstools), under-bed storage, bedside reading lamps, mini-fridges with glass doors, power outlets, USB ports (at vanity and bedside), ample shelving, and large wardrobes (with folding shelves, sliding shoe racks, and pull-out bins).

Like the Vista-class ships, Jubilee offers Havana staterooms with patios and direct access to a private sundeck area with loungers, a bar, and a pool. Family Harbor cabins (near Camp Ocean) provide direct access to the Family Harbor Lounge. Cloud 9 Spa cabins include exclusive amenities such as premium bathrobes, slippers, and Elemis toiletries.

The ship features over 180 suites across 11 categories, including 32 "Carnival Excel" suites in four premium categories, offering VIP perks and access to Loft 19 (a resort-style sundeck). All suites come with priority boarding/debarkation, bottled water on arrival, priority main dining seating, and plush bathrobes. Carnival Excel suite guests also enjoy:

  • Dedicated concierge phone line
  • Unlimited Loft 19 access
  • Priority reservations at specialty restaurants (excluding Bonsai Teppanyaki and Chef’s Table)
  • Complimentary room service, laundry, and Bottomless Bubbles soda package
  • Fresh fruit basket and sparkling wine on arrival
  • Upgraded bathroom amenities

Shipboard Facilities and Amenities

Like her sisterships, Jubilee features the largest Atrium and open-deck areas in the fleet.

Grand Central (midship on decks 6–8) is a day-to-night entertainment complex with a bar lounge and three decks of floor-to-ceiling windows. It connects to Bonsai Sushi, Bonsai Teppanyaki, Punchliner Comedy Club, and Piano Bar 88.

Currents (aft on decks 6–7) features multiple bars and eateries and links via a two-deck Promenade to The Golden Mermaid—a lounge with craft cocktails and live music.

The Shores (midship on deck 8) is an ocean-themed zone with two 24-hour complimentary venues—Coastal Slice (pizza) and Beach Buns (sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs)—plus the Marina Bar (live music, coffee, cocktails).

Summer Landing (aft on deck 8) includes Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, The Watering Hole (outdoor bar), ParchedPig (craft beers), and Heroes Tribute Lounge. It also offers a lunch counter, infinity pool, whirlpools, stage for live music, a sports bar, and interactive spaces.

Heroes Tribute (developed with Operation Homefront) offers lounge seating, large TVs, and tributes to military families and veterans.

Lido (aft on decks 16–17) houses complimentary venues such as Seafood Shack, BlueIguana Cantina, Guy’s Burger Joint, as well as new additions "Street Eats" (grab-and-go bites) and "Big Chicken by Shaq".

The Ultimate Playground (aft on decks 18–20) is a large family-friendly space with Carnival’s largest WaterWorks aqua park, an expanded SportSquare, and the signature "BOLT" roller coaster.

Signature facilities include Serenity (adults-only retreat), Alchemy Bar, and Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse. Additional innovations may be introduced later.

Debuting on Jubilee are two ocean-themed zones: Currents (decks 6–7) and The Shores (deck 8), replacing Mardi Gras' French Quarter and La Piazza zones.

The Currents Zone (midship-aft decks 6–7) transforms throughout the day and cruise. It features six large LED screens, a wave-shaped LED ceiling, and themed venues like Dr. Inks Ph.D. Bar and The Golden Mermaid Lounge. Deck 6 also houses Emeril's Bistro 717, a specialty restaurant by Emeril Lagasse.

Jubilee's Currents Zone offers an immersive underwater atmosphere.

  • "Seaquest: A Fun Sub Adventure" features interactive LED screens, a 100-ft ceiling display, sound effects, and themed visuals simulating an underwater voyage.
  • "Change the Currents" transforms the zone into six unique environments with new lights, colors, and sounds. "Create A Fish" lets kids design digital sea creatures shown on LED walls.
  • Evenings feature rotating themes and destinations on LED displays.
  • "Soundwaves Jukebox" turns passenger-chosen music into immersive visual light displays.
  • "Currents Atlas" is an interactive map showing real-time CCL fleet locations and facts about marine life migration.

The Shores Zone (midship-aft on Deck 8) is themed around seaside scenery, such as piers and beaches, and features a three-deck-high (Decks 6–7–8) fish-themed art installation. The boardwalk area includes a Ferris wheel-inspired ceiling and houses two complimentary 24-hour fast food venues—Coastal Slice (pizza bar) and Beach Buns (mini-sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs)—along with Cucina del Capitano (seafood restaurant) and the Marina Bar (offering specialty coffees, cocktails, and nightly live music).

Shipboard Dining Options – Food and Drinks

Carnival Jubilee's main dining rooms include select steakhouse items available for an additional charge. Traditional complimentary dining is offered at the Lido Buffet Restaurant. The New England-inspired Seafood Shack, available for lunch and dinner, offers both indoor and outdoor seating and a la carte menu items starting at $4, including lobster rolls, crab cakes, fried shrimp, clams, and steamed lobster.

The ship also features Bonsai Teppanyaki, a Japanese specialty restaurant located within Bonsai Sushi (Promenade-Havana Deck). This venue offers authentic Far East cuisine with a live cooking performance at an 8-seat table. Reservations are required due to limited seating. Meals begin with five appetizers (Miso Soup, Pork Belly Yakitori, Spicy Tuna on Rocks), include combo entrees, and end with signature desserts like Chocolate Bento Box and Green Tea Ice Cream. Open for lunch (sea days only) and dinner nightly, pricing is per person for the full meal.

The Chef’s Table is a fleetwide VIP dining experience (capacity 12 guests) that includes a multicourse dinner with the Master Chef, a cocktail reception, and a galley tour. Held in a private space (usually in the galley), it costs USD 75 per person and must be booked onboard.

Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse’s specialty venue is located on Deck 6 (portside). Emeril, known for his New Orleans restaurants and Food Network presence, offers a menu of spicy Creole favorites, including muffuletta sandwiches, cochon de lait po’boys, gumbo, and jambalaya. Breakfast items include Shrimp & Grits and Shrimp Creole Omelet. A la carte pricing includes appetizers at $2 and entrees at $12.

New venues exclusive to XL-class ships are found in the themed zones "Lido" (Deck 16) and "Summer Landing" (Deck 8 aft). These include the RedFrog Tiki Bar, The Watering Hole, Street Eats, and Big Chicken by Shaq.

  • RedFrog Tiki Bar is a two-level, South Pacific–themed venue near Guy’s Burger Joint, featuring tropical cocktails (e.g., Red’s Rum Runner Jumper, Polynesian Punch) served in souvenir glasses and pineapples.
  • The Watering Hole, located in The Patio at Summer Landing, is styled like a backyard bar, offering a wide selection of cocktails and Carnival’s own draft and canned beers.
  • Street Eats is an open-air complimentary eatery beside the Seafood Shack, with three kiosks serving steamed, fried, and plancha-cooked street foods. The menu rotates daily and may include items like empanadas, bao buns, and satay.

Big Chicken by Shaq (aft on Lido Deck) is the fleet’s fourth such venue, offering items created by Shaquille O’Neal and inspired by his favorite recipes.

Rudi’s Seagrill, a fleet-first restaurant by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin (Holland America Line), is located on Deck 8 between The Shores and Summer Landing. The restaurant offers indoor (80 seats) and outdoor (Lanai) seating. Signature seafood dishes (presented as “food faces”) include Bigeye Tuna, Grilled Branzino, Seared Scallops, Broiled Lobster Tails, and desserts like Caramel Apple Cheesecake. Non-seafood options are also available. A surcharge applies.

The two-deck-high Lido zone houses the largest "Guy’s Burger Joint" in the fleet, BlueIguana Cantina (Mexican food bar), the Seafood Shack, and the Lido Marketplace (buffet restaurant). Also featured are the midship Beach Pool and the aft-facing Tides Pool (with infinity views, bar service, and ample seating). The Lido Deck also hosts open-air events such as deck parties and Dive-In Movies (at Carnival Seaside Theater).

Below is the complete list of Carnival Jubilee restaurants and food bars:

  • Pacific Restaurant (two-level aft Main Dining Room)
  • Atlantic Restaurant (dinner-only Main Dining Room with table service)

(Deck 16/Lido) Chibang! is a new restaurant concept (introduced on Mardi Gras) offering signature Chinese and Mexican dishes (a la carte-priced). It features two distinct food menus and a beverage menu with specialty cocktails such as the Chibang! Margarita, Smokey Mezcal Negroni, and Green Tea Martini. The décor includes floor-to-ceiling windows, bold red and green accents with gold highlights, and a vibrant dragon at the entrance. Menu highlights include Kung Pao Chicken, Singapore Chili Shrimp, Slow-Braised Pork Belly, Egg Drop Soup, Crispy Pork Carnitas Tacos, Steak Ranchero, Mole de Pollo Mexicano, Pork Lomito, Pescado Frito Crujiente, and Camarones a la Diabla (spicy shrimp).

In mid-January 2018, CCL introduced four new craft beers brewed onboard Carnival Horizon and the new XL-class ships. Developed by brewmaster Colin Presby, these are available at Guy's Pig and Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse (Brewhouse). Each brew is inspired by the BBQ offerings and crafted onboard:

      • ParchedPig Farmhouse Ale – a lightly hopped beer with a dry finish.
      • ParchedPig Smoked Porter – brewed with house-smoked malt, hickory smoke, and molasses.
      • ParchedPig Toasted Amber Ale – features a rich amber hue with toasted caramel and biscuit notes.
      • ParchedPig West Coast IPA – a bold West Coast-style IPA with strong bitterness and pine/citrus aromas.

Itineraries

Carnival Jubilee operates year-round Caribbean cruises roundtrip from her homeport in Galveston, Texas. The originally scheduled inaugural cruise season was to begin October 30, 2023, with an 18-day transatlantic crossing from Southampton, UK, to Texas (calling at Vigo, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Funchal, and Grand Turk), followed by a Caribbean maiden voyage on November 18. However, construction delays postponed delivery, and the maiden voyage was rescheduled for December 23. Six early cruises were canceled (including the transatlantic and five Caribbean sailings).

The regular itinerary is a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise visiting Cozumel and Costa Maya (Mexico), and Mahogany Bay, Roatan (Honduras).

Bookings for Carnival Jubilee opened on January 25, 2021.

Carnival began homeporting in Galveston in 2000 and offers Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises to ports in the Bahamas (Nassau, Freeport, Half Moon Cay), Florida (Key West), Mexico (Cozumel, Costa Maya), Honduras (Roatan), and Belize City.

During their inaugural seasons, Jubilee’s sisterships were homeported in Port Canaveral (Mardi Gras, 2021) and Miami (Celebration, 2022).

Carnival Jubilee Wiki

The shipbuilding order (Meyer Werft yard number/hull S717) was placed by Carnival Corporation (shipowner) with the shipbuilder Meyer Werft (Papenburg Shipyard, Germany) on February 27, 2018. Originally, the order was for a third EXCEL/Excellence-class unit intended for the Corporation’s German subsidiary AIDA Cruises, as a sistership to AIDAnova and AIDAcosma. At the time, it marked the 98th cruise ship order for the global industry fleet (listed in the order book 2018–2026). However, in June 2021, it was announced that the newbuild would instead join the CCL fleet.

On June 23, 2021, Carnival Cruise Line announced plans to add two more ships to its fleet by 2023: an EXCEL-class unit (Carnival Jubilee) and Costa Magica (2004-built, joining CCL in the first half of 2022).

The vessel's name—Carnival Jubilee—along with her IMO number (9851737) and homeport (Galveston, TX), were officially announced on November 11, 2021, by Christine Duffy (CCL President). The ship’s name honors MS Jubilee (1986-built, scrapped in 2017 at Alang, India), the second of three Holiday-class liners. Her sisterships included MS Holiday (1985-built, scrapped in 2021 as "CMV Magellan") and MS Celebration (1987-built, scrapped in 2021 as "Grand Celebration").

For the Jubilee newbuild, on October 1, 2021, Meyer Werft contracted Silverstream Technologies (London, UK), a company specializing in hull air lubrication systems. This technology releases air bubbles from the ship’s flat-bottomed hull (via 12 ARUs/Air Release Units), creating a carpet of microbubbles that reduces water resistance—improving fuel efficiency by approximately 5% and enhancing maneuverability. The same system is also installed on P&O Arvia (2022) and Diamond Princess (2004).

Like most largenewbuilds, Carnival Jubilee is LNG-powered. She is fitted with four Caterpillar Marine LNG engines (model MaK 16M-46DF) generating a combined output of 57.2 MW. The propulsion system includes two Azimuthing thrusters with a total output of 37 MW. The ship is equipped with three LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with a combined capacity of ~3,200 m³. Two tanks measure 35 m (115 ft) in length and 8 m (26 ft) in diameter, each holding 1,525 m³ of gas, while the third tank measures 28 m (92 ft) in length and 5 m (16 ft) in diameter, holding 520 m³. LNG bunkering takes approximately 8 hours, and the fuel supply supports about 14 days of operation (including propulsion and onboard power).

For LNG bunkering in Florida (at PortMiami and Port Canaveral), Carnival partnered with Royal Dutch Shell plc as fuel supplier.

Construction officially began on March 18, 2022, with a steel-cutting ceremony at the Papenburg shipyard, attended by Christine Duffy (CCL President) and Jan Meyer (Meyer Werft Managing Director).

The keel-laying and coin ceremony took place on July 21, 2022, also at Meyer Werft Papenburg. Attendees included Christine Duffy, Ben Clement (CCL’s Senior VP of Newbuilds, Refurbishments & Product Innovation), and Bernard Meyer (Meyer Werft Managing Director).

Carnival's 26th ship was floated out from drydock on July 22, 2023, and moved to the shipyard’s outfitting pier. Her hull livery features a Texas star on the bow, symbolizing Carnival's long-standing commitment to Galveston—the first cruise line to homeport there year-round, as noted by Christine Duffy during the launch ceremony.

Carnival’s signature winged funnel was installed on July 25.

In August, Carnival announced Jubilee’s senior officers: Captain Andrea Catalani (with CCL since 1999), Chief Engineer Vittorino Perasole (since 1998), Hotel Director Pierre Camilleri (since 2004), Cruise Director Kyndall Magyar (since 2016), and Entertainment Director Matthew Boyd (since 2010).

During her Ems River conveyance (from Papenburg to Eemshaven, Netherlands), the vessel sailed backward, assisted by two tugboats. She departed Papenburg at 8:30 AM UTC on October 30 and arrived in Eemshaven at 3:56 AM UTC on October 31.

Sea trials in the North and Baltic Seas were conducted in two phases—November 7–10 and November 14–17. On November 10, the ship anchored near Skagen, Denmark for five hours. Following trials, the ship returned to Eemshaven for outfitting.

In November, Carnival announced that Jubilee would be the fleet's first ship to offer 5G mobile service, in partnership with Wireless Maritime Services LLC (WMS), a Miramar, Florida-based provider of high-performance at-sea cellular networks.

Carnival Jubilee was officially delivered to Carnival Cruise Line by Meyer Werft GmbH & Co KG on December 4, 2023, at Port Bremerhaven. The ceremony was attended by Christine Duffy, Ben Clement, Jan Meyer, and the ship’s senior officers.

For this ship, Meyer Werft contracted Almaco Group for planning, designing, building, and installing the provisioning areas. Completed in December 2023, the project included fixed furniture, air supply systems, electrical work, carpeting, ceiling finishing, and outfitting over 1,000 staterooms. Cabins were prefabricated, delivered, and installed by subcontractor EMS PreCab GmbH.

The christening ceremony was held on February 24, 2024, at Port Galveston. The invitation-only event was led by godmother Gwen Stefani (1969-born American singer-songwriter and lead vocalist of No Doubt). The 45-minute, live-streamed ceremony was hosted by Cruise Director Kyndall Fire and attended by Christine Duffy and Galveston Mayor Craig Brown. The event featured a rope trick performance and the national anthem. Mayor Brown presented Christine Duffy with the keys to the city and declared February 24 as "Carnival Jubilee Day." The date also marked what would have been the 100th birthday of Ted Arison (1924–1999), Carnival’s founder.
