Viking Odin Review

Review of Viking Odin

The 2012-built Longship Viking Odin cruises on the Danube, Moselle, Rhine, and Main rivers in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, France, Czechia, and Luxembourg, departing from homeports Passau, Budapest, and Nuremberg.

This Viking Longship is named after Odin, the Norse god of wisdom and the father of all gods. In mythology, Odin is associated with knowledge, prophecy, and magic. In his quest for wisdom, he travels across the realms of gods and men, carrying Gungnir (the never-missing spear) and Draupnir (the magical ring). Together with his brothers Ve and Vili, Odin slew the primeval giant Ymir (the father of the giants). They then created the first humans—Ask and Embla—from wood.

The name Odin (Old Norse “Óðinn”) means “furious.” From its Proto-Germanic form “Wodanaz” (Anglo-Saxon Woden/Wodan) derives the name of the fourth day of the week—Wednesday.

Viking Odin Wiki

Transfers to/from Viking Odin and airport meet-and-greet services are included in the cruise fare only when airfare is purchased through the Viking cruise line.

Viking Odin is part of the latest generation of Viking Cruises Longships. This patented river cruise vessel design allows for larger accommodations without reducing public space or compromising overall comfort. The Longship-class design incorporates energy-efficient hybrid engines, solar panels, and interiors by Yran & Storbraaten (Norway). The patented concept (developed by Rottet Studios, USA) enables full-size balconies and more spacious cabins by shifting the deck corridor off-center by approximately 1 m (3.3 ft).

The riverboat’s godmother is Joanna Lumley, a prominent British actress (best known for her role as Patsy Stone in the BBC comedy series “Absolutely Fabulous”), as well as a voiceover artist and author. The ship’s christening ceremony was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. On March 21, 2012, Viking Odin was inaugurated together with the Longship Idun (both in Amsterdam), and via live video link with Rostock, alongside Viking Freya and Viking Njord.
