Viking Ran Review
Review of Viking Ran
The 2027-built Longship Viking Ran sails on the Rhine River, visiting destinations in Holland, Germany, France, and Switzerland. The Viking longship operates from homeports Amsterdam and Basel.
This riverboat is named after Ran, the sea goddess in Norse mythology and the wife of Aegir (the ocean god). Known for capturing sailors with her net, Ran symbolizes both beauty and peril. Together, Ran and Aegir are said to have produced the nine wave maidens.

The vessel (ENI number TBA) will be Switzerland-flagged (MMSI TBA) and registered in Basel.
All Viking River Cruises longships are equipped with solar panels (mounted aft on the Sun Deck) and hybrid (diesel-electric) powerplants based on energy-efficient marine engines.
Cabins
Viking Ran has a total of 95 staterooms (9 Suites, 39 Balcony cabins, 22 French Balcony cabins, and 25 with non-opening windows) across 8 categories, accommodating a maximum of 190 passengers.
Longship Ran features two aft-located Explorer Suites with wraparound balconies offering 270-degree views. Each of the seven Veranda Suites includes two separate rooms, with a step-out balcony accessed from the living room and a French balcony in the bedroom. The 39 Veranda Staterooms also feature step-out balconies.
The vessel accommodates 190 passengers (maximum capacity), served by 53 crew and staff, and offers modern hotel-style amenities along with premium travel and leisure services.

Shipboard facilities
The Observation Bar Lounge features floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto the Aquavit Terrace, a bow-located indoor-outdoor venue designed for relaxation and al fresco dining. The Sun Deck offers 360-degree unobstructed river views and is serviced by the Aquavit Terrace staff for food and beverages.
This top deck includes a forward sundeck with the Sky Bar (outdoor seating area with tables and deckchairs), SkyLight (glass roof over the Atrium), and the Wheelhouse (navigation bridge). The midship section provides shaded seating (covered by a large retractable awning and encircled by a walking track) and a sunbathing area with loungers. The aft sundeck features a putting green (mini-golf), an organic herb garden, and a deck games area (shuffleboard and a giant outdoor chessboard).
Onboard dining venues include the Ran Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (Lido buffet with sliding doors opening onto the al fresco terrace). Additional facilities include a two-deck Atrium (lobby with a 24-hour Reception Desk), Library (Internet lounge), and Shop (gifts and souvenirs). Viking longships do not feature a fitness/gym room, swimming pool, jacuzzi (outdoor whirlpool), spa/beauty salon, or self-service laundry facilities (laundromats).
One elevator (passenger lift) connects Decks 2 and 3 only. All decks are also accessible via stairs located forward (Grand Staircase in the Atrium), midship, and aft.

Viking Ran Wiki
Viking Ran is one of the largest longships in the Viking Cruises fleet. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger passenger accommodations without reducing the size of public areas or compromising overall onboard comfort.
Longship Ran represents Viking's latest design, featuring energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and interior design by "Yran & Storbraaten" (Norway). The patented "longship" concept (developed by "Rottet Studios", USA) enables significantly larger accommodations with full-size (step-out) balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the corridor approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) off-center.
The vessel's powerplant consists of two main Caterpillar marine diesel engines (model CAT32-ACERT) with a combined power output of 2 MW. These are V12 engines (with 12 cylinders and pistons driving a crankshaft). The propulsion system is based on two Caterpillar marine propulsion units (model CAT18-ACERT) with a combined output of 1 MW.
