Viking Skirnir Review
Review of Viking Skirnir
The 2015-built Longship Viking Skirnir cruises on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers in Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Belgium, and Slovakia.
This Viking longship is named after Skirnir (meaning “bright one” or “clever”). In Norse mythology, Skirnir was the messenger of Freyr (the god of kings), tasked with courting the goddess Geror. As a reward for this favor, he demanded Freyr’s mighty sword. Skirnir is also known for his mission to the mountain dwarves on behalf of Odin (the father of the gods), who required their skills to forge Gleipnir—the magical restraint used to bind the monstrous wolf Fenrir (son of Loki).
Viking Skirnir’s “Grand European Tour” is a 15-day Rhine, Main, and Danube cruise, visiting Holland’s windmills and tulip fields, Germany’s fairytale castles, and Austria’s Wachau Valley vineyards. The “Romantic Danube” itinerary is an 8-day cruise visiting Budapest, Austria’s Wachau Valley, and Vienna.

The vessel (ENI number 7002018) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057498) and registered in Basel.
You can also choose the “Tulips and Windmills” itinerary—a 10-day voyage to Belgium’s medieval cities. Highlights include Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, and cosmopolitan Amsterdam, along with opportunities to sample traditional Dutch cheeses.
Cabins
Viking Skirnir has a total of 95 staterooms (including 9 Suites, 22 French Balcony cabins, and 25 with non-opening windows) across 8 categories. The ship features the same design elements as other Viking Longships, offering deluxe accommodations, streamlined Scandinavian interiors, and advanced engineering. The vessel includes two Explorer Suites (the largest accommodations onboard) and seven Veranda Suites (two-room suites with a veranda and French balcony). The 39 Veranda Staterooms feature full-size balconies.
Cabin Types/Categories (number, location), from highest to lowest:
- Suites - ES (x2, Deck 3), AA (x7, Deck 3)
- Balcony Staterooms - A (x20, Deck 3), B (x17, Deck 2)
- French Balcony Staterooms (with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors) - C (x5, Deck 3), D (x15, Deck 2)
- RiverView Staterooms - E (x18, Deck 1), F (x7, Deck 1)
Shipboard facilities
Viking Longships feature innovations such as the all-weather Aquavit Terrace, which brings outdoor scenery indoors and allows guests to enjoy river views and al fresco dining in any weather. All Viking Longships, including Skirnir, also feature onboard solar panels and organic herb gardens. Their hybrid engines are energy-efficient and reduce vibrations, ensuring a smoother ride.
Dining options onboard Viking Skirnir include the Skirnir Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (al fresco). Additional facilities include an Observation Lounge, Atrium (lobby), Library (Internet access), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), and a Sun Deck with shaded seating, Sky Bar, herb garden, putting green, walking track, and shuffleboard. The vessel does not have a gym, pool, jacuzzi, or spa.
Viking Skirnir cruise fares are inclusive of Wi-Fi, all shore excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee/tea service, and daily replenished bottled water.
Viking Skirnir cruise prices are per person, based on double occupancy, and are indicative only. Final rates may vary depending on promotions, special offers, travel agency packages, group bookings, or last-minute deals. On select itineraries and departure dates, Viking may offer discounted round-trip USA airfare packages.

Viking Skirnir Wiki
Transfers to/from Viking Skirnir and airport meet-and-greet services are included in the fare only when air travel is purchased through Viking Cruises.
Viking Skirnir is part of the latest generation of Viking Cruises longships. This patented river cruise vessel design allows for larger accommodations without reducing the size of public areas or compromising overall comfort. The ship represents Viking’s newest Longship-class design, featuring energy-efficient hybrid engines, solar panels, and interiors by “Yran & Storbraaten” (Norway). The patented “longship” design (developed by “Rottet Studios,” USA) enables significantly larger staterooms with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the deck corridor approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) off-center.
The riverboat’s godmother is Mrs. Donora Anderson, the company’s Senior Director of Operations. Other Viking Cruises longships launched in 2015 include Astrild, Beyla, Eir, Gefjon, Lofn, Mani, Mimir, Modi, Ve, Vidar, and Vili.
