Viking Tialfi Review
Review of Viking Tialfi
The 2016-built Longship Viking Tialfi cruises on the Rhine River through Germany, France, and Switzerland, departing from Amsterdam and Basel.
This Viking longship is named after the champion runner Tialfi, the son of Egil (a Norse mythology hero from the Volundarkvida poem). Tialfi became a servant of Tor (Thor), the thunder god, after eating one of his goats.
Viking Tialfi is among the newer longships in the Viking River Cruises fleet. The riverboat features an innovative corridor configuration (patented design), modern engineering and technology, signature Scandinavian-themed decor, premium stateroom amenities, an itinerary-based and expert-led enrichment program, themed onboard entertainment, efficient use of public spaces, the signature Aquavit Terrace lounge, and numerous cabins with step-out balconies. Each Viking longship also offers two of the largest suites in European river cruising.

The vessel (ENI number 7002036) is currently Switzerland-flagged (MMSI 269057549) and registered in Basel.
Cabins
Viking Tialfi has a total of 95 cabins (including 9 Suites, 39 Balcony cabins, 22 French Balcony cabins, and 25 with non-opening windows) across 8 categories. The ship features the same design elements as other Viking Longships, offering deluxe accommodations, streamlined Scandinavian interiors, and advanced engineering. Tialfi Suites include two full rooms, a private veranda and French balcony, spacious closets, hotel-style beds, and 42-inch flat-screen TVs.
Cabin types/categories (number, location), from highest to lowest:
- Suites - Veranda AA (x7, Deck 3), Explorer ES (x2, Deck 3)
- Balcony Staterooms (on Decks 2 and 3) - A, B (x39)
- French Balcony Staterooms (on Decks 2 and 3, with floor-to-ceiling door-windows) - C, D (x22)
- RiverView Staterooms - E, F (x25, Deck 1)
Shipboard facilities
Viking Longships feature bright public spaces with innovative design elements, such as the Aquavit Terrace at the bow, ideal for al fresco dining, and the Tialfi Observation Lounge with floor-to-ceiling glass doors offering panoramic views. Dining venues onboard Viking Tialfi include the Tialfi Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (al fresco). Additional facilities include an Atrium (lobby), Library (with Internet access), Shop (gifts and souvenirs), and a top deck with shaded relaxation areas, a Herbal Garden, putting green, walking track, deck chess, and shuffleboard. The Tialfi longship does not have a gym, pool, jacuzzi, or spa. The glass elevator connects only the Middle and Upper decks.
Viking Tialfi cruise fares include Wi-Fi Internet, all tours and excursions, ground transfers, live evening entertainment, daily lectures, food and wine tastings, 24-hour coffee and tea, and daily replenished bottled water.
Viking Tialfi river cruise prices are per person and based on double occupancy. These rates are indicative only and may vary depending on travel agency promotions, special offers, discounts, group bookings, or last-minute deals. On selected itineraries or cabin categories, the line may offer discounted round-trip airfare from the UK.
River Cruise Itineraries
Viking Tialfi itineraries focus on Rhine River cruises in Europe, primarily under the “RHINE DISCOVERY” theme. Below is a summary of the itinerary:
- "RHINE GETAWAY" – 7-day cruises between Amsterdam and Basel (in both directions). Ports of call include destinations in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Kinderdijk), France (Strasbourg), Germany (Cologne, Koblenz/Rudesheim, Heidelberg/Speyer, Breisach), and Switzerland (Basel).
- Flights to and from the UK may be included in cruise fares, along with all meals, luxury accommodations with river views, house wine, soft drinks, and beer with lunch and dinner, excursions at every port, complimentary tea and coffee, in-room infotainment systems (with movies on demand), Wi-Fi, and evening entertainment.

Viking Tialfi Wiki
Viking Tialfi is one of the two latest-generation Viking Cruises longships modified for cruising on the Rhine River. This patented river cruise ship design allows for larger accommodations without reducing the size of public areas or compromising overall onboard comfort.
Tialfi represents the line’s advanced Longship-class riverboat design. Viking Cruises longships feature energy-efficient hybrid engine technology, solar panels, and interiors designed by “Yran & Storbraaten” (Norway). The patented longship design (by “Rottet Studios”, USA) enables significantly larger passenger cabins with full-size balconies. The additional cabin space is achieved by shifting the corridor approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) off-center. Viking Tialfi offers Suite accommodations with two separate rooms—a bedroom with a French balcony and a living room with a veranda. All cabins accommodate a maximum of 2 passengers, and 75% of the staterooms feature a balcony. There are 8 cabin categories in total.
The riverboat’s godmother is Mrs. Sinead O’Connell (Vacation.com / Industry Relations Director). The ship’s naming ceremony was held in Amsterdam on March 1, 2016. As is traditional for Viking River Cruises, this was a “group christening” event for six longships. Tialfi was christened together with her sister ships Alruna, Egil, Kadlin, Rolf, and Vilhjalm.
