MS Vivienne Review

Review of MS Vivienne

MS Vivienne entered service for GCCL-Grand Circle Cruise Line in 2001. The vessel (ENI 07001728) was originally named “MS River Concerto” and offered capacity for 140 passengers and 38 crew. The initial owner was Grand Circle Corporation, and the ship was operated by its subsidiary Grand Circle Travel USA (Boston MA). The vessel is Malta-flagged and registered in Valletta.

In 2019, the ship was acquired by Navibelle Shipping AG and renamed from “River Concerto” to “Vivienne.” In 2020, the vessel underwent a major drydock refit and full refurbishment. Following the upgrade, capacity was adjusted to 146 passengers and 28 crew. Her sisterships include the similarly designed VistaBelle (2000/Viking Burgundy), Crucestar (2000/Viking Rhone), River Harmony (1999), River Rhapsody (1999), and MS Aurora (1999-built/2020-refitted, MMSI 244660956, ENI 02002173).

The refurbished Vivienne (ex-River Concerto) is now operated under charter by various travel brands, including Value World Cruises and CruiseAway.

Cabins

The vessel has four decks (three with cabins) and offers 73 staterooms across three types and six categories. Most measure 15 m² (160 ft²). The largest accommodations are located midship on the Upper Deck: one Owner’s Suite (30 m²) and two Suites (22 m²). Upper Deck and midship Middle Deck cabins feature French Balconies (floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening to a railing). Forward Middle Deck cabins have large non-opening Picture Windows, while Main Deck cabins (midship) are fitted with non-opening upper windows positioned near the ceiling.

All Vivienne staterooms accommodate two guests and include either two twins convertible to a double or a fixed queen-size bed. Standard amenities comprise bedside cabinets with drawers, wall-mounted reading lamps, window-side seating (two armchairs and a round table), a mirrored dressing table (writing desk with LED-lit round mirror), a wardrobe, and an electronic safe (in the closet). Bathrooms are en-suite and equipped with a WC, glass-enclosed shower, washbasin, hairdryer, and premium L’Occitane toiletries. Additional in-cabin amenities include a phone (intercom), HDTV (satellite channels and ship information channel), and individually controlled air conditioning. Bathrobes and slippers are provided exclusively in the Suites. All beds are hotel-style and set as doubles by default.

Shipboard facilities

On the Upper Deck are the Bar Lounge (forward Salon with floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows, dance floor, and comfortable seating), the midship Lobby (Reception and Gift Shop), and the aft Dining Room Restaurant (single open seating). The Lounge includes designated Library and Captain’s Club areas, and also houses the ship’s 24-hour Tea-Coffee Station offering complimentary beverages and light snacks.

The Sun Deck features the Wheelhouse (Navigation Bridge), a roof-covered and glass-walled Sundeck Lounge, a sunbathing area with loungers, and shaded seating areas (awnings with four-seat tables and deckchairs). All Sun Deck structures (Wheelhouse, Lounge, awnings, railings) are collapsible and lowered when passing under low bridges.

All decks are connected via internal stairways. A midship passenger elevator (Lift) links Decks 2 and 3, while exterior staircases and a stairlift connect Decks 3 and 4. Shipwide Wi-Fi is available (except on the Sun Deck) for an additional fee. Laundry service is offered at extra cost (no self-service facilities). On guided shore excursions, complimentary audio headsets are provided.
